Dynamics of the Multiplicity of Cellular Infection in a Plant Virus

Recombination, complementation and competition profoundly influence virus evolution and epidemiology. Since viruses are intracellular parasites, the basic parameter determining the potential for such interactions is the multiplicity of cellular infection (cellular MOI), i.e. the number of viral genome units that effectively infect a cell. The cellular MOI values that prevail in host organisms have rarely been investigated, and whether they remain constant or change widely during host invasion is totally unknown. Here, we fill this experimental gap by presenting the first detailed analysis of the dynamics of the cellular MOI during colonization of a host plant by a virus. Our results reveal ample variations between different leaf levels during the course of infection, with values starting close to 2 and increasing up to 13 before decreasing to initial levels in the latest infection stages. By revealing wide dynamic changes throughout a single infection, we here illustrate the existence of complex scenarios where the opportunity for recombination, complementation and competition among viral genomes changes greatly at different infection phases and at different locations within a multi-cellular host

Deux diplômes du IXe siècle pour Saint-Savin

Die Abtei Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, für ihre Fresken berühmt, hat nur spärlich Archivalien aufbewahrt. Um so mehr kann man sich über die Entdeckung zweier Urkunden freuen, welche einmal durch Pippin I., am 27. Februar 825, und einmal durch Ludwig II., dem Stotterer, am 19. Juli 878, in den Besitz der Abtei kamen. Beide Dokumente sind uns in Form später Kopien (vom Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts) erhalten, die ihrerseits nach einer Kopie aus dem 13. Jahrhundert angefertigt wurden. Mit Ausnahme eines eingefügten einleitenden Paragraphen nach der Corrobatio in der zweiten Urkunde, der zumindest teilweise als Abänderung verstanden werden mag, steht die Echtheit dieser beiden Dokumente zweifellos fest.The archive of the abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe (famous for its wallpaintings) is known only from meagre remains. Thus the discovery of two further diplomas, granted to the monastery by Pepin I on 27 February 825 and by Louis II the Stammerer on 19 July 878, comes as a welcome surprise. Both are preserved in a late-fifteenth-century copy, based on an earlier copy from the thirteenth century. With the exception of a clause added after the corroboration in the second diploma, which could be at least partly interpolated, their authenticity appears to be beyondCélèbre par ses peintures murales, l’abbaye de Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe n’a conservé que de pauvres archives anciennes. Aussi peut-on se réjouir de la découverte de deux diplômes concédés au monastère par Pépin Ier, le 27 février 825, et par Louis II le Bègue, le 19 juillet 878. Tous deux sont conservés par une copie tardive, de la fin du XVe siècle, qui avait elle-même été faite d’après une copie du XIIIe siècle. À l’exception d’une clause introduite après la corroboration dans le second diplôme, qui pourrait être, du moins en partie, une interpolation, l’authenticité de ces deux actes ne paraît pas devoir être mise en doute.Perrault Stéphane, Pon Georges.
