The Current Quality of Web-Based Information on the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Search
Background: An important aspect of managing chronic disorders like bipolar disorder is to have access to relevant health information. This study investigates and compares the quality of information on the treatments of bipolar disorder that is available on English websites, as an international language, and on Italian websites, as a popular local language. Methods: A systematic review search was obtained from four search engines. We excluded unrelated materials, scientific papers, and duplicates. We analyzed popularity with PageRank; technological quality with Nibbler; readability with the Flesh Reading Ease test and Gulpease index; quality of information with the DISCERN scale, the JAMA benchmark criteria, and on the extent of adherence to the HONCode. Results: 35 English and 31 Italian websites were included. The English websites were found to have a higher level of quality information and technological quality than the Italian ones. Overall, the websites were found to be difficult to read, requiring a high level of education. Conclusions: These results can be important to inform guidelines for the improvement of health information and help users to reach a higher level of evidence on the websites. Users should find the benefits of treatment, support for shared decision-making, the sources used, the medical editor’s supervision, and the risk of postponing treatment
Very preterm infants engage in an intervention to train their control of attention: results from the feasibility study of the Attention Control Training (ACT) randomised trial
Background
Very premature birth (gestational age between 28 and 31 + 6 weeks) is associated with increased risk of cognitive delay and attention deficit disorder, which have been linked to anomalies in the development of executive functions (EFs) and their precursors. In particular, very preterm (VP) infants display anomalies in controlling attention and gathering task-relevant information. Early interventions that support attention control may be pivotal in providing a secure base for VP children’s later attainments. The Attention Control Training (ACT) is a cognitive training intervention that targets infants’ abilities to select visual information according to varying task demands but had not been tested in VP infants. We conducted a feasibility study to test the processes we intend to use in a trial delivering the ACT to VP infants.
Methods and design
We tested recruitment and retention of VP infants and their families in a randomised trial, as well as acceptability and completion of baseline and outcome measures. To evaluate these aims, we used descriptive quantitative statistics and qualitative methods to analyse feedback from infants’ caregivers. We also investigated the quality of eye-tracking data collected and indicators of infants’ engagement in the training, using descriptive statistics.
Results
Twelve VP infants were recruited, and 10 (83%) completed the study. Participants’ parents had high education attainment. The rate of completion of baseline and outcome measures was optimal. VP infants demonstrated engagement in the training, completing on average 84 min of training over three visits, and displaying improved performance during this training. Eye-tracking data quality was moderate, but this did not interfere with infants’ engagement in the training.
Discussion
The results suggest the ACT can be delivered to VP infants. However, challenges remain in recruitment of numerous and diverse samples. We discuss strategies to overcome these challenges informed by results of this study.

Google matrix of business process management
Development of efficient business process models and determination of their
characteristic properties are subject of intense interdisciplinary research.
Here, we consider a business process model as a directed graph. Its nodes
correspond to the units identified by the modeler and the link direction
indicates the causal dependencies between units. It is of primary interest to
obtain the stationary flow on such a directed graph, which corresponds to the
steady-state of a firm during the business process. Following the ideas
developed recently for the World Wide Web, we construct the Google matrix for
our business process model and analyze its spectral properties. The importance
of nodes is characterized by Page-Rank and recently proposed CheiRank and
2DRank, respectively. The results show that this two-dimensional ranking gives
a significant information about the influence and communication properties of
business model units. We argue that the Google matrix method, described here,
provides a new efficient tool helping companies to make their decisions on how
to evolve in the exceedingly dynamic global market.Comment: submitted to European Journal of Physics
Discovering and Predicting Temporal Patterns of WiFi-interactive Social Populations
Extensive efforts have been devoted to characterizing the rich connectivity
patterns among the nodes (components) of such complex networks (systems), and
in the course of development of research in this area, people have been
prompted to address on a fundamental question: How does the fascinating yet
complex topological features of a network affect or determine the collective
behavior and performance of the networked system? While elegant attempts to
address this core issue have been made, for example, from the viewpoints of
synchronization, epidemics, evolutionary cooperation, and the control of
complex networks, theoretically or empirically, this widely concerned key
question still remains open in the newly emergent field of network science.
Such fruitful advances also push the desire to understand (mobile) social
networks and characterize human social populations with the interdependent
collective dynamics as well as the behavioral patterns. Nowadays, a great deal
of digital technologies are unobtrusively embedded into the physical world of
human daily activities, which offer unparalleled opportunities to explosively
digitize human physical interactions, who is contacting with whom at what time.
Such powerful technologies include the Bluetooth, the active Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) technology, wireless sensors and, more close to our
interest in this paper, the WiFi technology. As a snapshot of the modern
society, a university is in the coverage of WiFi signals, where the WiFi system
records the digital access logs of the authorized WiFi users when they access
the campus wireless services. Such WiFi access records, as the indirect proxy
data, work as the effective proxy of a large-scale population's social

Results from the centers for disease control and prevention's predict the 2013-2014 Influenza Season Challenge
Background: Early insights into the timing of the start, peak, and intensity of the influenza season could be useful in planning influenza prevention and control activities. To encourage development and innovation in influenza forecasting, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) organized a challenge to predict the 2013-14 Unites States influenza season. Methods: Challenge contestants were asked to forecast the start, peak, and intensity of the 2013-2014 influenza season at the national level and at any or all Health and Human Services (HHS) region level(s). The challenge ran from December 1, 2013-March 27, 2014; contestants were required to submit 9 biweekly forecasts at the national level to be eligible. The selection of the winner was based on expert evaluation of the methodology used to make the prediction and the accuracy of the prediction as judged against the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet). Results: Nine teams submitted 13 forecasts for all required milestones. The first forecast was due on December 2, 2013; 3/13 forecasts received correctly predicted the start of the influenza season within one week, 1/13 predicted the peak within 1 week, 3/13 predicted the peak ILINet percentage within 1 %, and 4/13 predicted the season duration within 1 week. For the prediction due on December 19, 2013, the number of forecasts that correctly forecasted the peak week increased to 2/13, the peak percentage to 6/13, and the duration of the season to 6/13. As the season progressed, the forecasts became more stable and were closer to the season milestones. Conclusion: Forecasting has become technically feasible, but further efforts are needed to improve forecast accuracy so that policy makers can reliably use these predictions. CDC and challenge contestants plan to build upon the methods developed during this contest to improve the accuracy of influenza forecasts. © 2016 The Author(s)
Autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms in uveitis
The eye, as currently viewed, is neither immunologically ignorant nor sequestered from the systemic environment. The eye utilises distinct immunoregulatory mechanisms to preserve tissue and cellular function in the face of immune-mediated insult; clinically, inflammation following such an insult is termed uveitis. The intra-ocular inflammation in uveitis may be clinically obvious as a result of infection (e.g. toxoplasma, herpes), but in the main infection, if any, remains covert. We now recognise that healthy tissues including the retina have regulatory mechanisms imparted by control of myeloid cells through receptors (e.g. CD200R) and soluble inhibitory factors (e.g. alpha-MSH), regulation of the blood retinal barrier, and active immune surveillance. Once homoeostasis has been disrupted and inflammation ensues, the mechanisms to regulate inflammation, including T cell apoptosis, generation of Treg cells, and myeloid cell suppression in situ, are less successful. Why inflammation becomes persistent remains unknown, but extrapolating from animal models, possibilities include differential trafficking of T cells from the retina, residency of CD8(+) T cells, and alterations of myeloid cell phenotype and function. Translating lessons learned from animal models to humans has been helped by system biology approaches and informatics, which suggest that diseased animals and people share similar changes in T cell phenotypes and monocyte function to date. Together the data infer a possible cryptic infectious drive in uveitis that unlocks and drives persistent autoimmune responses, or promotes further innate immune responses. Thus there may be many mechanisms in common with those observed in autoinflammatory disorders
Self-reported influenza vaccination uptake in people with chronic diseases: data from Progressi delle Aziende Sanitarie per la Salute in Italia (PASSI)
Background
Influenza is an important public health problem, with potential severe consequences among people with chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to obtain reliable measures of seasonal influenza vaccine uptake in this population, otherwise not available in Italy.
Methods
Progressi delle Aziende Sanitarie per la Salute in Italia (PASSI) is a nationwide surveillance system of health-related behaviours and acceptance of preventive interventions (including influenza immunisation) offered by the Italian National Health Service. Data are collected with telephone interviews at local health unit level for supporting local activities. The survey sample is randomly selected from local health unit lists of adult residents. The trend of annual vaccine coverage since 2008 was estimated for people aged 18–64 years who reported having at least one chronic disease. To obtain a sufficient sample size in subgroups, we analysed the characteristics of vaccinated people in the 2010–13 cumulative dataset. Univariate, multivariate, and logistic regression analyses were undertaken.
Findings
In 2008–13, 13 659 individuals with at least one chronic disease were interviewed. Vaccination coverage fell significantly from 29·7% (95% CI 27·2–32·4) in 2007–08 to 19·9% (18·0–22·1) in 2012–13. During 2010–13, the overall proportion of vaccinated people with a chronic disease was 25·6% (24·5–26·7). Vaccine coverage of people with diabetes (34·3%, 31·7–36·9) or cardiovascular diseases (31·8%, 29·6–34·2) was greater than that of people affected by renal failure, respiratory diseases, tumours, or chronic liver diseases (26·5% [22·5–30·7], 24·9% [23·2–26·7], 22·2% [20·0–24·6], and 20·6% [17·5–24·6], respectively). Vaccination coverage increased with age (from 13·1% [11·0–15·5] in the 18–34 year age group to 33·4% [31·9–35·1] in people aged 50–64 years); it was higher among people with a low educational level than among those with a high educational level, higher in those having economic difficulties than in those with no economic difficulties, and higher among Italian citizens than among non-citizens.
Interpretation
In the past few years, prevalence of influenza vaccination in Italian adults with at least one chronic disease was well below the Ministry of Health's goal (75% minimum) and showed a downward trend. A major reason of this evolution is probably the changing public perception of the benefits and risks of vaccines. PASSI is a source of useful data not otherwise available for public health intervention.

Two naphthalene degrading bacteria belonging to the genera Paenibacillus and Pseudomonas isolated from a highly polluted lagoon perform different sensitivities to the organic and heavy metal contaminants
Two bacterial strains were isolated in the presence of naphthalene as the sole carbon and energy source from sediments of the Orbetello Lagoon, Italy, which is highly contaminated with both organic compounds and metals. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of the two isolates assigned the strains to the genera Paenibacillus and Pseudomonas. The effect of different contaminants on the growth behaviors of the two strains was investigated. Pseudomonas sp. ORNaP2 showed a higher tolerance to benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene than Paenibacillus sp. ORNaP1. In addition, the toxicity of heavy metals potentially present as co-pollutants in the investigated site was tested. Here, strain Paenibacillus sp. ORNaP1 showed a higher tolerance towards arsenic, cadmium, and lead, whereas it was far more sensitive towards mercury than strain Pseudomonas sp. ORNaP2. These differences between the Gram-negative Pseudomonas and the Gram-positive Paenibacillus strain can be explained by different general adaptive response systems present in the two bacteria

Hypothyroidism Enhances Tumor Invasiveness and Metastasis Development
11 pages, 9 figures.[Background]: Whereas there is increasing evidence that loss of expression and/or function of the thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) could result in a selective advantage for tumor development, the relationship between thyroid hormone levels and human cancer is a controversial issue. It has been reported that hypothyroidism might be a possible risk factor for liver and breast cancer in humans, but a lower incidence of breast carcinoma has been also reported in hypothyroid patients
[Methodology/Principal Findings]: In this work we have analyzed the influence of hypothyroidism on tumor progression and metastasis development using xenografts of parental and TRβ1–expressing human hepatocarcinoma (SK-hep1) and breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-468). In agreement with our previous observations tumor invasiveness and metastasis formation was strongly repressed when TRβ–expressing cells were injected into euthyroid nude mice. Whereas tumor growth was retarded when cells were inoculated into hypothyroid hosts, tumors had a more mesenchymal phenotype, were more invasive and metastatic growth was enhanced. Increased aggressiveness and tumor growth retardation was also observed with parental cells that do not express TRs.
[Conclusions/Significance]: These results show that changes in the stromal cells secondary to host hypothyroidism can modulate tumor progression and metastatic growth independently of the presence of TRs on the tumor cells.
