    The lecture video recording in university: A case study

    The latest European statistics show that Italy has the second lowest percentage of university graduates because of different reasons such as the outdated teaching methodologies or the high costs of university tuitions. Hence, Italian universities have launched several projects to improve or innovate the pedagogical strategies, to raise the student recruitment and to increase access to education. In this work, we describe a pilot study about the use of the video recording of the traditional lessons in order to create specific university MOOCs. In particular, the degree course in Computer Science of University of Naples Federico II is involved in this project. The use of the lecture video recording reduces the MOOC costs and facilitates the contents management. In fact, the production of these MOOCs does not require professional operators so it is possible to involve students of university part-time job or Civil Service volunteers. The results show a good satisfaction by students and prove as these MOOCs can support the university teaching

    Micronucleus formation induced by biomass burning particles derived from biomass burning induce high micronucleus frequency in Tradescantia pallida assay (TRAD-MN)

    Manual harvesting is usually done after to sugar cane burning which is responsible for seasonal emission of air pollutants in Brazil and it is believed to be responsible for deleterious health effects in exposed populations. The mutagenic potential of sugar cane burning harvesting particulate and particle surrogates of residual oil fly ash (ROFA) were evaluated in assays measuring micronuclei (MN) in the pollen mother cells of Tradescantia pallida (TRAD-MN). Micronuclei frequencies in TRAD-MN to sugar cane burning residues (SCBR) at doses 0.3 and 0.03 mg/mL were respectively 2.18 ± 0.35 and 5.53 ± 1.04, whereas to ROFA from incinerator and ROFA from an electrostatic precipitator installed in one of the chimneys of a steel plant, MN frequencies were, respectively, 3.43 ± 0.7 and 4.90 ± 1.07. Significant differences were detected among the groups (p < 0.001), demonstrating that SCBR was at least as genotoxic as the fossil fuel derived particles. The results suggest that the burning process to harvest sugar cane should be better controlled. Keywords: pollution, burning particles, micronuclei, Tradescantia pallida . Partículas derivadas da queima de biomassa induzem alta frequência de micronúcleos no ensaio de Tradescantia pallida (TRAD-MN) Resumo A coleta de cana-de-açúcar manual é geralmente realizada após a queima, a qual é responsável pela emissão sazonal de poluentes atmosféricos no Brasil e acredita-se que este seja responsável pelos efeitos deletérios a saúde da população exposta. O potencial mutagênico da queima de cana-de-açúcar e partículas oriundas de resíduos em cinza de óleo queimado (ROFA) foi avaliado em ensaio que mede a freqüência de micronúcleos (MN) em células mãe de grão de pólen de Tradescantia pallida (TRAD-MN). A freqüência de TRAD-MN em resíduos de queima de cana de açúcar (SCBR) nas doses de 0.3 e 0,03mg/mL foi, respectivamente de 2,18 ± 0,35 e 5,53 ± 1,04, enquanto para ROFA de incinerador e ROFA de um precipitador eletrostático instalado em uma chaminé de uma indústria siderúrgica, a freqüência de MN foi, respectivamente, 3,43 ± 0,7 e 4,90 ± 1,07. Diferença significante foi observada entre os grupos (p<0,001), demonstrando que SCBR foi ao menos tão genotóxico quanto às partículas derivadas de combustíveis fósseis. Os resultados sugerem que o processo de queima de cana-de-açúcar no período da safra deveria ser mais bem controlado.     DYNAMICAL SIMULATION OF A VALVETRAIN MECHANISM: AN ENGINEERING EDUCATION APPROACH

    The present work aims to present a valvetrain model considering the dynamics functioning aspects of an Otto’s engine. The model will be constructed using Adams/View® software, which is a powerful modeling and simulating environment of dynamic systems. It allows building, simulating, refining and optimizing any mechanical system. In fact, the model will help engineering students to understand how the mechanism works, in terms of displacement, velocity and acceleration of the valve as a function of the time. It is also possible to know the behavior of the force in the spring as a function of the time and, finally, the torque applied in the cam due to a angular velocity input. Relative to spring force, during the Otto engine cycle, the cam lobe must be able to open and close the valve as fast and as smoothly as possible. The force responsible to close the valve is applied by the valve spring, which is also responsible for keeping contact between the cam lobe and the valve. Dynamic forces impose limits on cam and valve lift. Thus, the simulation model allows determining these forces and displacements through the cam rotation. As main objectives the authors wish to make available a model which is capable to show in 3D the animation of a valvetrain mechanism of an Otto engine, obtaining the main curves for analysis and evaluation of this mechanism performance

    Transcriptional Analysis of Lennert Lymphoma Reveals a Unique Profile and Identifies Novel Therapeutic Targets

    Lennert lymphoma (LL) is a lymphoepithelioid morphological variant of peripheral T-cell lymphoma—not otherwise specified (PTCL/NOS), clinically characterized by better prognosis if compared with other PTCL/NOS. Although well characterized as far as morphology and phenotype are concerned, very little is known regarding its molecular features. In this study, we investigated the transcriptional profile of this tumor aiming 1) to identify its cellular counterparts; 2) to better define its relation with other PTCLs—and, therefore, its possible position in lymphoma classification; and 3) to define pathogenetic mechanisms, possibly unveiling novel therapeutic targets. To address these issues, we performed gene and microRNA expression profiling on LL and other PTCL/NOS cases; we identified different genes and microRNAs that discriminated LL from other PTCL/NOS. Particularly, LL revealed a molecular signature significantly enriched in helper function and clearly distinguishable from other PTCL/NOS. Furthermore, PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway emerged as novel potential therapeutic target. In conclusion, based on the already known particular morphological and clinical features, the new molecular findings support the hypothesis that LL might be classified as a separate entity. Preclinical and clinical studies testing the efficacy of PI3K/MTOR inhibitors in this setting are warranted

    Bevacizumab for newly diagnosed ovarian cancers: Best candidates among high-risk disease patients (icon-7)

    Bevacizumab is approved as a maintenance treatment in first-line setting in advanced-stage III-IV ovarian cancers, because GOG-0218 and ICON-7 phase III trials demonstrated progression-free survival benefits. However, only the subgroup of patients with high-risk diseases (stage IV, and incompletely resected stage III) derived an overall survival (OS) gain in the ICON-7 trial (4.8 months). The modeled CA-125 elimination rate constant K (KELIM) parameter, based on the longitudinal CA- 125 kinetics during the first 100 days of chemotherapy, is a potential indicator of the tumor primary chemo-sensitivity. In the ICON-7 trial dataset, the OS of patients within the low- and high-risk disease groups was assessed according to treatment arms and KELIM. Among the patients with high-risk diseases, those with favorable standardized KELIM of at least 1.0 (n=214, 46.7%) had no survival benefit from bevacizumab, whereas those with unfavorable KELIM less than 1.0 (n=244, 53.2%) derived the highest OS benefit (absolute difference = 9.1 months, 2-sided log-rank P=.10; Cox hazard ratio = 0.78, 95% confidence interval = 0.58 to 1.04, 2-sided P=.09)

    Accurate Measurement in the Field of the Earth of the General-Relativistic Precession of the LAGEOS II Pericenter and New Constraints on Non-Newtonian Gravity

    The pericenter shift of a binary system represents a suitable observable to test for possible deviations from the Newtonian inverse-square law in favor of new weak interactions between macroscopic objects. We analyzed 13 years of tracking data of the LAGEOS satellites with GEODYN II software but with no models for general relativity. From the fit of LAGEOS II pericenter residuals we have been able to obtain a 99.8% agreement with the predictions of Einstein's theory. This result may be considered as a 99.8% measurement in the field of the Earth of the combination of the {\gamma} and {\beta} parameters of general relativity, and it may be used to constrain possible deviations from the inverse-square law in favor of new weak interactions parametrized by a Yukawa-like potential with strength {\alpha} and range {\lambda}. We obtained |{\alpha}|\lesssim1\times10-11, a huge improvement at a range of about 1 Earth radius

    TEPEE/GReAT (General Relativity Accuracy Test in an Einstein Elevator): Ready to start

    TEPEE/GReAT is an experiment aimed at testing the principle of equivalence at a level of accuracy equal to 5 parts in 1015 by means of a differential acceleration detector free falling inside a co-moving, cryogenic, evacuated capsule, released from a stratospheric balloon. The detector is spun about a horizontal axis during the fall in order to modulate the equivalence principle violation signal at the spin frequency. Thanks to the recent funding of the Italian side, the project is ready to enter its second phase. The main activities related to detector prototype (both non-cryogenic and cryogenic versions) development and testing, free-fall tests, signal extraction from noise (in particular related to the common-mode rejection factor) and flight model requirements are discussed
