Dynamics of Massive Scalar Fields in dS Space and the dS/CFT Correspondence
Global geometric properties of dS space are presented explicitly in various
coordinates. A Robertson-Walker like metric is deduced, which is convenient to
be used in study of dynamics in dS space. Singularities of wavefunctions of
massive scalar fields at boundary are demonstrated. A bulk-boundary propagator
is constructed by making use of the solutions of equations of motion. The
dS/CFT correspondence and the Strominger's mass bound is shown.Comment: latex, 14 pages and 3 figure
Domain walls in Born-Infeld-dilaton background
We study the dynamics of domain walls in Einstein-Born-Infeld-dilaton theory.
Dilaton is non-trivially coupled with the Born-Infeld electromagnetic field. We
find three different types of solutions consistent with the dynamic domain
walls. For every case, the solutions have singularity. Further more, in these
backgrounds, we study the dynamics of domain walls. We qualitatively plot
various form of the bulk metrics and the potential encountered by the domain
walls. In many cases, depending upon the value of the parameters, the domain
walls show bouncing universe and also undergo inflationary phase followed by
standard decelerated expansion.Comment: 18 pages,6 figures, latex, References added, Some points clarifie
The Nearby Supernova Factory
The Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) is an ambitious project to find and
study in detail approximately 300 nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) at
redshifts 0.03<z<0.08. This program will provide an exceptional data set of
well-studied SNe in the nearby smooth Hubble flow that can be used as
calibration for the current and future programs designed to use SNe to measure
the cosmological parameters. The first key ingredient for this program is a
reliable supply of Hubble-flow SNe systematically discovered in unprecedented
numbers using the same techniques as those used in distant SNe searches. In
2002, 35 SNe were found using our test-bed pipeline for automated SN search and
discovery. The pipeline uses images from the asteroid search conducted by the
Near Earth Asteroid Tracking group at JPL. Improvements in our subtraction
techniques and analysis have allowed us to increase our effective SN discovery
rate to ~12 SNe/month in 2003.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures to be published in New Astronomy Review
de Sitter black hole with a conformally coupled scalar field in four dimensions
A four-dimensional black hole solution of the Einstein equations with a
positive cosmological constant, coupled to a conformal scalar field, is given.
There is a curvature singularity at the origin, and scalar field diverges
inside the event horizon. The electrically charged solution, which has a fixed
charge-to-mass ratio is also found. The quartic self-interacting coupling
becomes bounded in terms of Newton's and the cosmological constants.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, CECS style, energy conditions are discussed and

The Newtonian Limit of F(R) gravity
A general analytic procedure is developed to deal with the Newtonian limit of
gravity. A discussion comparing the Newtonian and the post-Newtonian
limit of these models is proposed in order to point out the differences between
the two approaches. We calculate the post-Newtonian parameters of such theories
without any redefinition of the degrees of freedom, in particular, without
adopting some scalar fields and without any change from Jordan to Einstein
frame. Considering the Taylor expansion of a generic theory, it is
possible to obtain general solutions in term of the metric coefficients up to
the third order of approximation. In particular, the solution relative to the
component gives a gravitational potential always corrected with
respect to the Newtonian one of the linear theory . Furthermore, we
show that the Birkhoff theorem is not a general result for -gravity since
time-dependent evolution for spherically symmetric solutions can be achieved
depending on the order of perturbations. Finally, we discuss the
post-Minkowskian limit and the emergence of massive gravitational wave
solutions.Comment: 16 page
Some Dynamical Effects of the Cosmological Constant
Newton's law gets modified in the presence of a cosmological constant by a
small repulsive term (antigarvity) that is proportional to the distance.
Assuming a value of the cosmological constant consistent with the recent SnIa
data () we investigate the significance of this
term on various astrophysical scales. We find that on galactic scales or
smaller (less than a few tens of kpc) the dynamical effects of the vacuum
energy are negligible by several orders of magnitude. On scales of 1Mpc or
larger however we find that vacuum energy can significantly affect the
dynamics. For example we show that the velocity data in the Local Group of
galaxies correspond to galactic masses increased by 35% in the presence of
vacuum energy. The effect is even more important on larger low density systems
like clusters of galaxies or superclusters.Comment: 5 two column pages, 2 figure
Cosmological constant influence on cosmic string spacetime
We investigate the line element of spacetime around a linear cosmic string in
the presence of a cosmological constant. We obtain the metric and argue that it
should be discarded because of asymptotic considerations. Then a time dependent
and consistent form of the metric is obtained and its properties are discussed.Comment: 3 page
A Class of Anisotropic Five-Dimensional Solutions for the Early Universe
We solve the Ricci-flat equations of extended general relativity to obtain an
interesting class of cosmological models. The solutions are analogous to the 4D
ones of Bianchi type-I of Kasner type and have significant implications for
astrophysics.Comment: V2 has some minor editorial changes in the introductio
Field theory models for variable cosmological constant
Anthropic solutions to the cosmological constant problem require seemingly
unnatural scalar field potentials with a very small slope or domain walls
(branes) with a very small coupling to a four-form field. Here we introduce a
class of models in which the smallness of the corresponding parameters can be
attributed to a spontaneously broken discrete symmetry. We also demonstrate the
equivalence of scalar field and four-form models. Finally, we show how our
models can be naturally embedded into a left-right extension of the standard
model.Comment: A reference adde
