    Preservation of marine biodiversity deserves serious consideration as almost 65% of the earth's organisms (excluding insects) are marine. There is little knowledge at present on the status of marine biodiversity. However, the seas are an important source of protein for human consumption and genetic diversity is a key factor in ecosystem functioning, stability and resilience. Overfishing and destructive practices may have unalterable impact on marine biodiversity. This paper discusses measures that can be adopted to protect the most productive areas of the marine ecosystem

    Effect of self-healing additions on the development of mechanical strength of cement paste

    Important research efforts have been recently focused on the development of self-healing cement composites. The healing mechanism, implemented within the material, must be automatically initiated as soon as the first signs of damage appear at the micro-scale. For doing so, two different additions have been developed to incorporate them simultaneously into the cementitious matrix: silica microcapsules containing an epoxy sealing compound (CAP) and nanosilica particles functionalized with amine groups (NS). As a first step to the development of a self-healing concrete with these two additions, their pozzolanic activity has been measured by an accelerated test. The high values of fixed lime obtained at 28 days (85% for CAP, 93% for NS and 88% for a mix of them) suggest that they are suitable for construction materials’ applications. Furthermore, the behaviour of the additions in an ordinary Portland cement paste with 20 wt.% of commercial micro-silica has been studied, considering the partial substitution of micro-silica by CAP, NS and their mix. High values of compressive strength (>60 MPa) have been obtained in all cases after 28 days of hydration. However, while the addition of CAP induces a reduction of the compressive strength of the 24% with respect to the reference material, the addition of NS gives rise to a slight enhancement of the strength (5%) due to a pozzolanic reaction confirmed by X-ray diffraction data. Finally, in the presence of both CAP and NS, the beneficial effect of the nanosilica is counteracted by the microcapsules and a reduction of 28% is obtained for the compressive strength

    High astrometric precision in the calculation of the coordinates of orbiters in the Geo Ring

    We present an astrometric method for the calculation of the positions of orbiters in the GEO ring with a high precision, through a rigorous astrometric treatment of observations with a 1-m class telescope, which are part of the CIDA survey of the GEO ring. We compute the distortion pattern to correct for the systematic errors introduced by the optics and electronics of the telescope, resulting in absolute mean errors of 0.16" and 0.12" in right ascension and declination, respectively. These correspond to Ëś 25 m at the mean distance of the GEO ring, and are thus good quality results

    Avoidable Adverse Events Related to Ignoring the Do-Not-Do Recommendations: A Retrospective Cohort Study Conducted in the Spanish Primary Care Setting

    Objective This study aimed to measure the frequency and severity of avoidable adverse events (AAEs) related to ignoring do-not-do recommendations (DNDs) in primary care. Methods A retrospective cohort study analyzing the frequency and severity of AAEs related to ignoring DNDs (7 from family medicine and 3 from pediatrics) was conducted in Spain. Data were randomly extracted from computerized electronic medical records by a total of 20 general practitioners and 5 pediatricians acting as reviewers; data between February 2018 and September 2019 were analyzed. Results A total of 2557 records of adult and pediatric patients were reviewed. There were 1859 (72.7%) of 2557 (95% confidence interval [CI], 71.0%-74.4%) DNDs actions in 1307 patients (1507 were performed by general practitioners and 352 by pediatricians). Do-not-do recommendations were ignored more often in female patients (P < 0.0001). Sixty-nine AAEs were linked to ignoring DNDs (69/1307 [5.3%]; 95% CI, 4.1%-6.5%). Of those, 54 (5.1%) of 1062 were in adult patients (95% CI, 3.8%-6.4%) and 15 (6.1%) of 245 in pediatric patients (95% CI, 3.1%-9.1%). In adult patients, the majority of AAEs (51/901 [5.7%]; 95% CI, 4.2%-7.2%) occurred in patients 65 years or older. Most AAEs were characterized by temporary minor harm both in adult patients (28/54 [51.9%]; 95% CI, 38.5%-65.2%) and pediatric patients (15/15 [100%]). Conclusions These findings provide a new perspective about the consequences of low-value practices for the patients and the health care systems. Ignoring DNDs could place patients at risk, and their safety might be unnecessarily compromised

    Anthocyanin pigments in strawberry

    The anthocyanin composition was analysed in strawberry fruits from five different cultivars (cv. Eris, Oso Grande, Carisma, Tudnew and Camarosa). Twenty-five defined anthocyanin pigments were detected, most of them containing Pelargonidin (Pg) as aglycone; some cyanidin (Cy) derivatives were also found. Glucose and rutinose were the usual substituting sugars, although arabinose and rhamnose were also tentatively identified; some minor anthocyanins showed acylation with aliphatic acids. A relevant aspect was the detection of anthocyanin-derived pigments, namely 5-carboxypyranopelargonidin-3-glucoside and four condensed pigments containing C–C linked anthocyanin (Pg) and flavanol (catechin and afzelechin) residues. Total anthocyanin content ranged between 200 and 600mg/kg, with Pg 3-gluc constituting 77–90% of the anthocyanins in the strawberry extracts followed by Pg 3-rut (6–11%) and Cy 3-gluc (3–10%). A notable variability was found among the anthocyanin concentrations in samples of a same variety and harvest, indicating a strongly influence of the degree of maturity, edaphic-climatic factors and post-harvest storage
