Floristic Composition Of A Neotropical Inselberg From EspĂrito Santo State, Brazil: An Important Area For Conservation
Our study on granitic and gneissic rock outcrops on Pedra dos PontĂ”es in EspĂrito Santo state contributes to the knowledge of the vascular flora of inselbergs in southeastern Brazil. We registered 211 species distributed among 51 families and 130 genera. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Polypodiaceae were the most representative families. Concerning vegetative habit, herbs were predominant and about the preference for substrates, holorupicolous species and epiphytes were most speciose. The richest rocky habitat type was woody thicket, with 122 exclusive species. In total, 27 of the species registered in our study are cited on official lists of endangered plant species from EspĂrito Santo state and Brazil. In addition, two new records of angiosperms for EspĂrito Santo flora and two new species were recorded for the area. Our data demonstrates the importance of the area for conservation of unique biodiversity that serves as a sanctuary for a rich rupicolous flora composed of endemic and endangered species, some of which are new to science. © 2017 Check List and Authors.13
Human Clostridium difficile infection caused by a livestock-associated PCR ribotype 237 strain in Western Australia
Introduction:
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a significant gastrointestinal disease in the developed world and increasingly recognised as a zoonotic infection. In North America and Europe, the PCR ribotype (RT) 078 strain of C. difficile is commonly found in production animals and as a cause of disease in humans although proof of transmission from animals is lacking. This strain is absent in Australian livestock. We report a case of human CDI caused by a strain of C. difficile belonging to known Australian livestock-associated RT 237.
Case presentation:
A young male was admitted for multiple trauma following a motor vehicle accident and placed on piperacillin/tazobactam for pneumonia. After 4 days of treatment, he developed symptoms of CDI, which was confirmed in the laboratory. His symptoms resolved after 6 days of intravenous metronidazole. The strain of C. difficile isolated was identified as RT 237, an unusual RT previously found in with several Western Australia piggeries.
Conclusion:
This case of CDI caused by an unusual livestock-associated C. difficile RT 237 supports the hypothesis of zoonotic transmission. The case highlights the potential of livestock to act as reservoir for C. difficile and the need for continued surveillance of CDI in both human and animal populations
Incorporating oldman saltbush hay and prickly pear in diets for red Sindhi calves
This study was designed to evaluate the nutrient intake, digestibility, degradability, and ruminal characteristics of Sindhi heifers fed diets that contained a combined total of 75% oldman saltbush hay (hereafter saltbush hay) and prickly pear cactus. Eight 12-month old intact male red Sindhi calves (four fistulated and four non-fistulated) with an initial mean weight of 170 ± 5 kg were assigned to 4 à 4 Latin squares, where factors consisted of four diets, namely 15% hay and 60% cactus; 30% hay and 45% cactus; 45% hay and 30% cactus; and 60% hay and 15% cactus, and four times at which rumen fluid was collected. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) intakes in kg/day and NDF in percentage live weight (LW), water intake, salinity, and conductivity increased with hay level. Intake and digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrates were curvilinear with higher values in diets containing 30% saltbush hay. The apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic matter decreased linearly as the concentration of saltbush hay increased in the diet. The pH of the rumen fluid was within the acceptable range for favourable microbial growth. The low temperature and high salinity and conductivity indices in the diets should be viewed with caution at higher concentrations of saltbush hay, because of a possible decrease in nutrient absorption and the development of health problems in the animals. Anadenanthera colubrina vell brenan : anti-candida and antibiofilm activities, toxicity and therapeutical action
We evaluated the antifungal and antibiofilm potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of bark from Anadenanthera colubrina (vell.) Brenan, known as Angico, against Candida spp. Antifungal activity was evaluated using the microdilution technique through the Minimum Inhibitory and Fungicide Concentrations (MIC and MFC). The antibiofilm potential was tested in mature biofilms formed by Candida species and analyzed through the counting of CFU/mL and scanning electron micrograph (SEM). In vivo toxicity and therapeutic action was evaluated in the Galleria mellonella model. The treatment with the extract, in low doses, was able to reduce the growth of planktonic cells of Candida species. MIC values range between 19.5 and 39 ”g/mL and MFC values range between 79 and 625 ”g/mL. In addition was able to reduce the number of CFU/mL in biofilms and to cause structural alteration and cellular destruction, observed via SEM. A. colubrina showed low toxicity in the in vivo assay, having not affected the viability of the larvae at doses below 100mg/kg and high potential in the treatment of C. albicans infection. Expanding and Collapsing Scalar Field Thin Shell
This paper deals with the dynamics of scalar field thin shell in the
Reissner-Nordstrm geometry. The Israel junction conditions between
Reissner-Nordstrm spacetimes are derived, which lead to the equation
of motion of scalar field shell and Klien-Gordon equation. These equations are
solved numerically by taking scalar field model with the quadratic scalar
potential. It is found that solution represents the expanding and collapsing
scalar field shell. For the better understanding of this problem, we
investigate the case of massless scalar field (by taking the scalar field
potential zero). Also, we evaluate the scalar field potential when is an
explicit function of . We conclude that both massless as well as massive
scalar field shell can expand to infinity at constant rate or collapse to zero
size forming a curvature singularity or bounce under suitable conditions.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
Quantifying the levitation picture of extended states in lattice models
The behavior of extended states is quantitatively analyzed for two
dimensional lattice models. A levitation picture is established for both
white-noise and correlated disorder potentials. In a continuum limit window of
the lattice models we find simple quantitative expressions for the extended
states levitation, suggesting an underlying universal behavior. On the other
hand, these results point out that the Quantum Hall phase diagrams may be
