Funder: European Society of Intensive Care Medicine; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100013347Funder: Flemish Society for Critical Care NursesAbstract: Purpose: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are particularly susceptible to developing pressure injuries. Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

Síndrome autoinmune / autoinflamatorio inducido por adyuvantes (ASIA) después de la vacunación cuadrivalente contra el virus del papiloma humano en colombianos: un llamado a la medicina personalizada

This was a case study in which 3 patients with autoimmune/auto-inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) after quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccination (HPV) were evaluated and described. All the patients were women. Diagnosis consisted of HLA-B27 enthesitis related arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematous, respectively. Our results highlight the risk of developing ASIA after HPV vaccination and may serve to increase the awareness of such a complication. Factors that are predictive of developing autoimmune diseases should be examined at the population level in order to establish preventive measures in at-risk individuals for whom healthcare should be personalised and participatory

ENDS consumption in students of higher education: Phenomenon on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic triggered transformations in the population’s lifestyles, including electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) consumption. The aim of the study was to determine associations between ENDS consumption habits and lifestyles among higher education students in Bogotá, Colombia. Methods This study employed a cross-sectional analytical design, based on a selfadministered online survey, conducted in 2021, among students aged 18–59 years. The sample size was 3985 students. Statistical analysis was done through frequency studies, hypothesis testing and a multivariate-penalized logistic regression model ( firthlogit ), based on the Akaike information criterion (AIC). Results A total of 3573 students completed the survey, 61.5% were female, 55.3% were young (aged 18–26 years), and 44.6% were adults (aged 27–59 years). The prevalence of ENDS use during the pandemic was 7.3%. Age was negatively associated with ENDS use, as young people had a higher likelihood of using these devices. The likelihood of ENDS use was negative among females (OR=0.38; 95% CI: 0.2–0.5). In contrast, it was positive in students with a history of psychoactive substance abuse and/or dependence (OR=3.59; 95% CI: 1.0–12.0), students who had tried conventional cigarettes (OR=5.12; 95% CI: 3.0–8.5), participants who smoked tobacco during the pandemic (OR=3.15; 95% CI: 2.3–4.2), those who studied virtually (OR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.0–2.3), participants who lived with other ENDS users (OR=3.86; 95% CI: 2.8–5.2) and students with negative perception of impacts on their mental health (OR=1.48; 95% CI: 1.1–1.9). Conclusions Being male, aged <26 years, having a history of substance use, having tried conventional cigarettes, pandemic tobacco use, and having lived with other ENDS users, were the main factors associated with pandemic ENDS use. Studying the consumption habits of students in response to lifestyle changes, is fundamental for the formulation of strategies to reduce the development of addictive behaviors, especially in young students during the pandemic
