Accelerator Magnet Development Based on COMB Technology with STAR Wires

This paper reports progress in the development of COMB magnet technology with STAR wires. A two-layer dipole magnet with 60 mm clear bore has been recently fabricated and tested in liquid nitrogen. The purpose of the test was to determine what kind of critical current degradation occurs in the process of winding the STAR wire into the COMB structure.Comment: CEC/ICMC2

Sikander AK Lodhi, JM Lokabhi Reddy, Venkataratnam Peram Department of Ophthalmology, Osmania Medical College/Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, Telangana, India Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features, treatment options, and visual outcome of Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) disease patients over a 9-year period.Method: A retrospective chart analysis of 32 patients with VKH, from January 2007 to December 2015, at a tertiary care government medical college eye hospital in South India. Results: A total of 32 patients were diagnosed with VKH. The mean age at diagnosis was 32.03±8.8 years. There were 24 patients (42 eyes) with acute VKH and eight patients (16 eyes) with recurrent/chronic VKH. The mean baseline best-corrected visual acuity on presentation in the acute VKH group was 5/60 (1.114±0.565) and at last follow-up it was 6/9 (0.225±0.157). Intravenous methyl prednisolone (IVMP) was administered for 3 days to all patients with acute and recurrent VKH, followed by posterior subtenon triamcinolone (40 mg/mL) and oral azathioprine. Conclusion: VKH-related uveitis is more common in the female gender in this South Indian population. Posterior uveitis is the most common initial manifestation. Initial aggressive treatment with IVMP, peribulbar long-acting corticosteroids, and immunosuppressives, avoiding side effects of systemic steroids, gives a good visual outcome without recurrences. Cases of unilateral VKH, seen in six patients, are the initial manifestations in the natural course of the disease, which if managed aggressively at the acute stage prevents recurrence in the other eye. <p>A single robust reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed and validated as per International Conference on Harmonization guidelines for the accurate quantification of curcuminoids in commercial turmeric products, Ayurvedic medicines, and nanovesicular systems. The proposed chromatographic method was found to be specific, linear (<i>r</i>2 ≥ 0.999), precise at intra- and inter-day levels (percentage relative standard deviation <2.0%), accurate (percentage recovery 99.14–102.29%), and robust. The limits of detection and quantification were found to be 7.40 and 24.70 ng mL−1 for curcumin, 9.24 and 30.80 ng mL−1 for demethoxycurcumin, and 6.48 and 21.61 ng mL−1 for bisdemethoxycurcumin, respectively. Among different commercial turmeric products and Ayurvedic medicines tested, the contents of curcumin (3.54 ± 0.06–25.8 ± 0.08 mg g−1), demethoxycurcumin (1.28 ± 0.02–9.97 ± 0.03 mg g−1), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (0.50 ± 0.01–5.97 ± 0.01 mg g−1) varied significantly. The developed method was effectively applied to the determination of encapsulation efficiency of curcuminoids (ranged between 84.33 ± 3.50 and 96.59 ± 2.53%) in the nanovesicular systems. In conclusion, the reported method is suitable for the analysis of curcuminoids in a wide variety of turmeric products and used for the quality control of products that contain curcuminoids.</p
