Noise characteristics of upper surface blown configurations: Analytical Studies

    Get PDF
Noise and flow results of upper surface blown configurations were analyzed. The dominant noise source mechanisms were identified from experimental data. From far-field noise data for various geometric and operational parameters, an empirical noise prediction program was developed and evaluated by comparing predicted results with experimental data from other tests. USB aircraft compatibility studies were conducted using the described noise prediction and a cruise performance data base. A final design aircraft was selected and theory was developed for the noise from the trailing edge wake assuming it as a highly sheared layer

    Impedance spectroscopy analysis of Ti n O 2n − 1 Magnéli phases

    Get PDF
This letter presents a comprehensive impedance spectroscopy characterisation of Magnéli phases (Ti n O 2n − 1 ) over a range of temperatures, which are of interest in electrochemistry and sensing applications, with the aim to enhance the understanding of their electrical properties and influence their microstructure. The impedance of the Ti n O 2n − 1 can be resolved into two different contributions, namely the grain bulk (R B ) and grain boundaries (R GB ). The ac conductivity increases with frequency and temperature, following a universal power law. The high relative permittivity (10 5 -10 6 ), which is relatively frequency independent from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz, is attributed to the presence of insulating grain boundaries (R GB NN R B ) creating an Internal Barrier Layer Capacitor (IBLC) effect. Above 100 kHz, the grain boundaries begin to contribute to the ac conductivity and the permittivity drops sharply

Assessment of Potential Augmentation and Management Strategies for Razorback Sucker \u3cem\u3eXyrauchen texanus\u3c/em\u3e in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon: A 2021 Science Panel Summary

Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus is a large-bodied, long-lived species endemic to the Colorado River Basin. This species historically ranged throughout the basin from the Colorado River delta in Mexico to Wyoming and Colorado. Currently, the species persists ,in a small portion of its historical range with the help of intensive management efforts including augmentation. Recruitment to adult life stages is extremely limited in the wild, but is documented consistently in Lake Mead. Research and monitoring efforts in Lake Mead are ongoing since 1996 and have recently expanded to include the Colorado River inflow area and portions of lower Grand Canyon. Despite evidence of recruitment, the current population size in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon is believed to be small (data) and susceptible to stochastic effects. This raised interest in the potential to augment the population to prevent loss of genetic diversity and increase abundance and distribution in general, as well as explore recruitment bottlenecks. To address critical uncertainties surrounding this management option and to brainstorm other potential options, a Planning Committee and Steering Committee made up of representatives of state (Arizona, Nevada), tribal (Hualapai Tribe, Navajo Nation), and federal (Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) management agencies convened an Expert Science Panel (ESP; 2021), to consider augmentation and management strategies for Razorback Sucker in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon. The purpose of this report is to summarize those findings

Improving methods and indicators for evaluating coastal water eutrophication: a pilot study in the Gulf of Maine

    Get PDF
Study Goals and Objectives: 1) Improve existing nutrient-related eutrophication assessment methods, updating (from early 1990s to early 2000s) the eutrophication assessment for systems included in the study with the improved method. 2) Develop a human-use/socioeconomic indicator to complement the assessment indicator. The human-use indicator was developed to evaluate costs of nutrient-related degradation in coastal waters and to put the issue into a broader context relevant to the interested public and legislators as well as to scientists. 3) Project objectives included collecting existing water quality data, developing an accessible database appropriate for application to a national study, and applying the assessment methods to 14 coastal systems – nine systems north of Cape Cod and five systems south. The geographical distribution of systems was used to examine potential regional differences in condition. 4) The intent is to use the lessons learned in this pilot study on a national scale to guide completion of an update of the 1999 National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment

    Path Following for Mobile Manipulators

This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Robotics Research. The final authenticated version is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-60916-4_30This paper presents a framework of path following via set stabilization for mobile manipulator systems. The mobile manipulator is modelled as a single redundant dynamic system. The mobile base considered belongs to a large class of wheeled ground vehicles, including those with nonholonomic constraints. Kinematic redundancies are resolved by designing a controller that solves a suitably defined constrained quadratic optimization problem, which can be easily tuned by the designer to achieve various desired poses. By employing partial feedback linearization, the proposed path following controller has a clear physical meaning. The desired path to be followed is a spline in the output space of the system. The controller simultaneously controls the manipulator and mobile base. The result is a unified path following controller without any trajectory planning performed on the mobile base. The approach is experimentally verified on a 4-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) manipulator mounted on a differential drive mobile platfor
