    Abstract: Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) has driven curriculum reforms in science education globally, with many educators teaching science as inquiry, in the hope of improving learners’ understandings of scientific concepts and improving achievements in standardised tests. The curiosity of whether learners’ engagements and understandings of the Nature of Scientific Inquiry (NOSI) is capable of improving achievement in standardised Physical Sciences tests is important in validating the global emphasis on Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE). The main aim of this study was to assess grade twelve Physical Sciences learners’ understandings about the NOSI using the Views About Scientific Inquiry (VASI) questionnaire and then compare VASI scores with achievement scores obtained from the National Senior Certificate (NSC) preparatory Physical Sciences examination, a standardised provincial test used in preparing matriculants for the final NSC grade twelve examinations. The study followed a cross-sectional survey design, and involved one hundred and seven (107) grade twelve learners from three Johannesburg high schools. Data were collected using the adopted VASI questionnaire. Responses from the VASI questionnaire were coded and scored with the aid of a rubric. VASI scores were compared against the NSC preparatory test scores using descriptive and inferential statistics..

    Transport and Spectra in the Half-filled Hubbard Model: A Dynamical Mean Field Study

    We study the issues of scaling and universality in spectral and transport properties of the infinite dimensional particle--hole symmetric (half-filled) Hubbard model within dynamical mean field theory. One of the simplest and extensively used impurity solvers, namely the iterated perturbation theory approach is reformulated to avoid problems such as analytic continuation of Matsubara frequency quantities or calculating multi-dimensional integrals, while taking full account of the very sharp structures in the Green's functions that arise close to the Mott transitions and in the Mott insulator regime. We demonstrate its viability for the half-filled Hubbard model. Previous known results are reproduced within the present approach. The universal behavior of the spectral functions in the Fermi liquid regime is emphasized, and adiabatic continuity to the non-interacting limit is demonstrated. The dc resistivity in the metallic regime is known to be a non-monotonic function of temperature with a `coherence peak'. This feature is shown to be a universal feature occurring at a temperature roughly equal to the low energy scale of the system. A comparison to pressure dependent dc resistivity experiments on Selenium doped NiS2_2 yields qualitatively good agreement. Resistivity hysteresis across the Mott transition is shown to be described qualitatively within the present framework. A direct comparison of the thermal hysteresis observed in V2_2O3_3 with our theoretical results yields a value of the hopping integral, which we find to be in the range estimated through first-principle methods. Finally, a systematic study of optical conductivity is carried out and the changes in absorption as a result of varying interaction strength and temperature are identified.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure

    © 2019 Various missions carried out by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are concerned with permanent monitoring of a predefined set of ground targets under relative deadline constraints, i.e., the targets have to be revisited ‘indefinitely’ and there is an upper bound on the time between two consecutive successful scans of each target. A solution to the problem is a set of routes—one for each UAV—that jointly satisfy these constraints. Our goal is to find a solution with the least number of UAVs. We show that the decision version of the problem (given k, is there a solution with k UAVs?) is PSPACE-complete. On the practical side, we propose a portfolio approach that combines the strengths of constraint solving and model checking. We present an empirical evaluation of the different solution methods on several hundred randomly generated instances

    Phenotypically determined resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to normal human serum: environmental factors in subcutaneous chambers in guinea pigs

    Some gonococci obtained from human urethral exudate or from subcutaneously implanted chambers in guinea pigs show a resistance to killing by human serum which is lost on subculture in vitro after a few generations. The environmental factors which may influence the phenotypic expression of resistance to serum killing were investigated in guinea pig chambers and in chamber fluid in vitro. The redox potential in chambers before and after infection was lower than that of heart blood but conditions were not anaerobic; H2O2 increased the redox potential but did not decrease gonococcal serum resistance. The chambers were slightly alkaline before and after infection. When the concentration of glucose (depleted in infected chambers by the abundant polymorphonuclear cells) was restored to excess, the serum resistance of the gonococci was unaffected. Concentrations of free amino acids in chambers changed little during infection. Gonococci adapted to growth in chambers and subsequently rendered serum-sensitive by growing once on agar reverted to serum-resistance after 0.5 to 1 h incubation in chamber fluid in vitro at 37°C but not at 25°C or 4°C. After 16 to 24 h growth at 37°C, resistance was again lost. The reversion to serum resistance did not occur in a complex laboratory medium.     Clinicopathological features of extranodal lymphomas: Kuwait experience

    A total of 935 patients with extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) diagnosed in the period between January 1985 and December 2000 in Kuwait Cancer Center, serving the whole population of Kuwait, were used to describe the clinicopathological and epidemiological features of extranodal lymphomas in Kuwait. Extranodal lymphomas accounted for 45% of all NHL observed during this time. All NHL cases from Kuwait Cancer registry were analyzed and pathologically reclassified using the latest WHO ( 2000) classification. The most common lymphoma observed was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (58.60%) followed by Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) (3.80%). In the pediatric group, BL comprises more than two thirds of all patients (77.20%). The most common extranodal sites were stomach (19.70%) and skin (17.80%) in the adult group, large intestine (29.80%) and small intestine (19.30%) in the pediatric age group. The majority (73.40%) of adult extranodal lymphomas was in stage IE - IIE and had a very good prognosis. On the contrary, the majority of pediatric extranodal lymphomas were found to be in stage III and IV. Variations in treatment policies ( single agent or combined chemotherapy, radiotherapy, combined modality treatment) adopted and changed during the time period of 16 years of this retrospective study were documented.
