SOCIALIZATION TO RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS ADMINISTRATION THROUGH TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING: A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION OF FACULTY PERCEPTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI
This study examined faculty socialization at the University of Mississippi regarding research and sponsored program administration through the lens of transformative learning. Participants were 10 tenure track faculty who had been employed at the University of Mississippi no less than one year, no more than seven years, and who had submitted a proposal to or been awarded by an external sponsor to support their research. This study uses a phenomenological design of inquiry where the researcher describes the lived experiences of individuals regarding a phenomenon as defined by the participants through semi-structured interviews. Findings suggested that sponsored research faculty perceived that (a) their doctoral education at the University of Mississippi had shaped their values, attitudes, and practices, (b) they were socialized to research through learning by doing, (c) mentorship was an integral part of socialization into research, (d) there were challenges to advancing their research as faculty members, (e) there were facilitators to advancing their research as faculty members and (f) the education and professional backgrounds of the research faculty had influenced their decision to join doctoral research. Findings are discussed in terms of themes contextualizing the socialization of faculty through a transformative learning lens

STABILITY OF MEAN VALUES: APPLICATION OF THE BATES METHOD TO FIELD HOCKEY
A limitation within biomechanics research is an insufficient number of trials are analysed. Conjecture exists over the minimum number of trials required to achieve a stable mean. This study was conducted to identify the minimum number of trials necessary for mean values of selected kinematic variables to stabilise, using the progressive standard deviation method adapted from Bates et al. (1983). Three-dimensional kinematic data of the field hockey hit was collected using a 10-camera Vicon motion analysis system and analysed using Visual 3D (C-Motion). Mean values for selected parameters were calculated and the progressive change in standard deviation assessed. Results showed the number of trials needed for mean stabilisation is both parameter and task specific. The last threshold approach should be used to account for variability within parameters
Double, Triple, Quadruple the Recipe: Serve Library Instruction to a Crowd (and Assess It, Too!) with LibGuides and PollEverywhere
Offering library instruction to a class of over 200 may sound impossible -- or crazy -- but some library instruction recipes can be scaled up to serve a crowd. The presenters (a political science instructor and a librarian) embedded library activities on politics and the media by creating an online guide to help students find news and information on political campaigns and then evaluate that information. Students participated in class discussion and shared their findings and reflections through cellphone voting. In this session we’ll share our strategies and results, and invite the audience to participate with PollEverywhere!
At many institutions class sizes are growing, which can make active learning more difficult to plan and carry out. In addition to the pressures of larger classes, some librarians have more instruction demands than they can handle. If that sounds familiar, then this session is for you. We will present a model for delivering library instruction to many students at once, which can be both efficient and effective. In our presentation we will share strategies for getting students involved and engaged in a lecture hall, our methods for assessing student learning from the library activities, and results of our assessment

multi-messenger astronomy. Prompt detection alerts for the astronomical
community might make it possible to observe the onset of electromagnetic
emission from (CBC). We demonstrate a computationally practical filtering
strategy that could produce early-warning triggers before gravitational

Identifying Community-Engaged Translational Research Collaboration Experience and Health Interests of Community-Based Organizations Outside of Metropolitan Atlanta
Background: While rural health research has increased over the last two decades, there is limited understanding of the self-reported health priorities and research interests of rural and suburban community-based representatives and residents. These insights can be used to inform more successful intervention strategies that are responsive to the lived experiences of local residents and leaders who are the gatekeepers to buy-in and sustainability of community engaged research. The Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance, a collaboration between four academic institutions includes a Community Engagement Program (CE) designed to facilitate community-academic research partnerships. This study aimed to assess the health priorities, community-academic research experience, and interests of community respondents outside of Metropolitan Atlanta through the Community Engagement Facilitation Survey (CEFS).
Methods: CE Program and Community Steering Board created the CEFS to assess the health topic priorities, research experience, and interests of community-based representatives and community members across the state of Georgia. The 11-item survey was administered (paper and electronic surveys) statewide at community events and professional organization meetings. Descriptive statistics were analyzed, and geospatial mapping was conducted. Data were analyzed in SPSS and Microsoft Excel software systems to clean data and to calculate data counts and percentages. Three maps were created in Tableau Version 19.2 depicting all counties represented by the survey sample superimposed with the counties from which at least one respondent indicated each of the top three health priorities for this sample.
Results: Four-hundred six (406) surveys were analyzed, representing 83.6% of rural and suburban Georgia counties. The most frequently identified health priorities and research interests were diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and mental health
Assessment of the Draft AIAA S-119 Flight Dynamic Model Exchange Standard
An assessment of a draft AIAA standard for flight dynamics model exchange, ANSI/AIAA S-119-2011, was conducted on behalf of NASA by a team from the NASA Engineering and Safety Center. The assessment included adding the capability of importing standard models into real-time simulation facilities at several NASA Centers as well as into analysis simulation tools. All participants were successful at importing two example models into their respective simulation frameworks by using existing software libraries or by writing new import tools. Deficiencies in the libraries and format documentation were identified and fixed; suggestions for improvements to the standard were provided to the AIAA. An innovative tool to generate C code directly from such a model was developed. Performance of the software libraries compared favorably with compiled code. As a result of this assessment, several NASA Centers can now import standard models directly into their simulations. NASA is considering adopting the now-published S-119 standard as an internal recommended practice

Thiopurine monotherapy is effective in ulcerative colitis but significantly less so in Crohn’s disease: long-term outcomes for 11 928 patients in the UK inflammatory bowel disease bioresource
Objective: Thiopurines are widely used as maintenance therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but the evidence base for their use is sparse and their role increasingly questioned. Using the largest series reported to date, we assessed the long-term effectiveness of thiopurines in ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), including their impact on need for surgery. Design: Outcomes were assessed in 11 928 patients (4968 UC, 6960 CD) in the UK IBD BioResource initiated on thiopurine monotherapy with the intention of maintaining medically induced remission. Effectiveness was assessed retrospectively using patient-level data and a definition that required avoidance of escalation to biological therapy or surgery while on thiopurines. Analyses included overall effectiveness, time-to-event analysis for treatment escalation and comparison of surgery rates in patients tolerant or intolerant of thiopurines. Results: Using 68 132 patient-years of exposure, thiopurine monotherapy appeared effective for the duration of treatment in 2617/4968 (52.7%) patients with UC compared with 2378/6960 (34.2%) patients with CD (p<0.0001). This difference was corroborated in a multivariable analysis: after adjusting for variables including treatment era, thiopurine monotherapy was less effective in CD than UC (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.51, p<0.0001). Thiopurine intolerance was associated with increased risk of surgery in UC (HR 2.44, p<0.0001); with a more modest impact on need for surgery in CD (HR=1.23, p=0.0015). Conclusion: Thiopurine monotherapy is an effective long-term treatment for UC but significantly less effective in CD
