    Zero-field dissipationless chiral edge transport and the nature of dissipation in the quantum anomalous Hall state

    The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is predicted to possess, at zero magnetic field, chiral edge channels that conduct spin polarized current without dissipation. While edge channels have been observed in previous experimental studies of the QAH effect, their dissipationless nature at a zero magnetic field has not been convincingly demonstrated. By a comprehensive experimental study of the gate and temperature dependences of local and nonlocal magnetoresistance, we unambiguously establish the dissipationless edge transport. By studying the onset of dissipation, we also identify the origin of dissipative channels and clarify the surprising observation that the critical temperature of the QAH effect is two orders of magnitude smaller than the Curie temperature of ferromagnetism.Comment: main text+supporting materials.     Organizational Resources, Country Institutions, and National Culture behind Firm Survival and Growth during COVID-19

    This paper provides one of the first comprehensive and most updated studies on the effects of firms’ organizational resources, country institutions, and national culture on the survival and growth of private firms around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing World Bank Enterprise Follow-up Surveys on COVID-19 that cover 18,770 firms in 36 countries, the paper documents four sets of findings. (1) During the pandemic, firms with favorable organizational resources (state ownership and affiliation with parent companies) are more likely to survive and grow, whereas firms with foreign ownership or more financial obstacles are less likely to survive or grow. Firms in countries with a higher per capita income, a lower COVID-19 spread, and a less stringent COVID-19 control policy are more likely to survive and grow. (2) Favorable ownership and parent-company affiliations help cushion the pandemic shock during the pandemic. (3) The relationship between firm characteristics and firm survival/growth is significantly affected by the stringency of a country’s COVID-19 policy. (4) Firm survival and growth are positively related to a country’s cultural tendency in terms of long-term orientation and are not significantly related to uncertainty avoidance and individualism. The overall quality of country governance is negatively linked to the odds for firm survival as well as revenue and employment growth

    We consider the problem of sequencing a set of positive numbers. We try to find the optimal sequence to maximize the variance of its partial sums. The optimal sequence is shown to have a beautiful structure.     Evaluation of ecotoxicity of typical surfactants for leather manufacture by luminescent bacteria

    Content: Surfactants are used as auxiliaries in every wet processing process of leather production and discharged into wastewater, which would cause potential ecological risks. In this paper, fresh luminescent bacillus liquids were employed to evaluate the ecological toxicity of six surfactants, including anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants, and mixture of two typical ionic and nonionic surfactants after a 15-min exposure period. Non-ionic surfactants AEO and Tween80 showed slight light inhibition ie.10-35% to luminescent bacteria. The toxicity of anionic surfactants with polar sulfonic group was: penetrant T(EC50=406.81mg/L) >SDBS(EC50=573.37mg/L). The toxicity of cationic surfactants was: DTAB(EC50=10.68mg/L)>SKC (EC50=73.96mg/L). The addition of nonionic surfactants reduced the toxicity of ionic surfactants. 1-1 mixture of SKC and AEO: EC50=80.17mg/L, 1-1 mixture of SDBS and AEO: EC50=624.34mg/L. These results provided ecological parameters for the selection of surfactants in the process of ecological leather production. Take-Away: 1. The toxicity measurement by luminescent bacteria, which is simple and convenient, was used to evaluate the toxicity of surfactants, and the reproducibility was improved in our study. 2. The toxicities of six different surfactants was evaluated by EC50 which provided ecological parameters for the selection of surfactants in the process of ecological leather production

    The ACS Virgo Cluster Survey XV. The Formation Efficiencies of Globular Clusters in Early-Type Galaxies: The Effects of Mass and Environment

    The fraction of stellar mass contained in globular clusters (GCs), also measured by number as the specific frequency, is a fundamental quantity that reflects both a galaxy's early star formation and its entire merging history. We present specific frequencies, luminosities, and mass fractions for the globular cluster systems of 100 early-type galaxies in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey, the largest homogeneous catalog of its kind. We find that 1) GC mass fractions can be high in both giants and dwarfs, but are universally low in galaxies with intermediate luminosities. 2) The behavior of specific frequency across galaxy mass is dominated by the blue GCs. 3) The GC fractions of low-mass galaxies exhibit a dependence on environment. Nearly all dwarf galaxies with high GC fractions are within 1 Mpc of the cD galaxy M87, presenting the first strong evidence that GC formation in dwarfs is biased toward dense environments. 4) GC formation in central dwarfs is biased because their stars form earliest and most intensely. Comparisons to the Millennium Simulation show that central dwarfs have older stellar populations and form more stars at higher star formation rates (SFRs) and SFR surface densities. The SFR surface density in simulated dwarfs peaks before the total SFR, naturally producing GC populations that are older and more metal-poor than the field stars. 5) Dwarfs within ~40 kpc of the giant ellipticals M87 and M49 are red and have few or no GCs, suggesting that they have been tidally stripped and have contributed their GCs to the halos of their giant neighbors. The central dwarfs with high GC mass fractions are thus likely to be the survivors most similar to the protogalaxies that assembled the rich M87 globular cluster system.(Abridged)Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures, 7 tables.     Proposing a New Research Framework for Loan Allocation Strategies in P2P Lending

    One of the frontier Web 2.0 applications is online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending marketplace, where individual lenders and borrowers can virtually meet for loan transactions. From a lender’s perspective, she not only wants to lower investment risk but also to gain as much return as possible. However, P2P lenders possess the inherent problem of information asymmetry that they don’t really know if a borrower has capability to pay the loan or is truthfully willing to pay it in due time, leading them to a disadvantaged situation when making the decision of lending money to the borrower. This study intends to consider the loan allocation as an optimization research problem using the research framework based upon modern portfolio theory with the aim of helping lenders achieve the two goals of gaining high return and lowering risk at the same time. The expected results of this research are twofold: 1) compared to a logistic regression based credit scoring method, we expect to make more profits for lenders with risk level unchanged, and 2) compared to a linear regression based profit scoring method, we expect to lower risk without lowering return. Our proposed new model could offer insights into how individual lenders can optimize their loan allocation strategies when considering return and risk simultaneously

    The ACS Fornax Cluster Survey. II. The Central Brightness Profiles of Early-Type Galaxies: A Characteristic Radius on Nuclear Scales and the Transition from Central Luminosity Deficit to Excess

    We analyse HST surface brightness profiles for 143 early-type galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. Sersic models provide accurate descriptions of the global profiles with a notable exception: the observed profiles deviate systematically inside a characteristic "break" radius of R_b ~ 0.02R_e where R_e is the effective radius of the galaxy. The sense of the deviation is such that bright galaxies (M_B < -20) typically show central light deficits with respect to the inward extrapolation of the Sersic model, while the great majority of low- and intermediate-luminosity galaxies (-19.5 < M_B < -15) show central light excesses; galaxies occupying a narrow range of intermediate luminosities (-20 < M_B < -19.5) are usually well fitted by Sersic models over all radii. The slopes of the central surface brightness profiles, when measured at fixed fractions of R_e, vary smoothly as a function of galaxy luminosity in a manner that depends sensitively on the choice of measurement radius. We show that a recent claim of strong bimodality in slope is likely an artifact of the galaxy selection function used in that study. To provide a more robust characterization of the inner regions of galaxies, we introduce a parameter that describes the central luminosity deficit or excess relative to the inward extrapolation of the outer Sersic model. We find that this parameter varies smoothly over the range of ~ 720 in blue luminosity spanned by the Virgo and Fornax sample galaxies, with no evidence for a dichotomy. We argue that the central light excesses (nuclei) in M_B > -19 galaxies may be the analogs of the dense central cores that are predicted by some numerical simulations to form via gas inflows.     Evaluating residual acceleration noise for TianQin gravitational waves observatory with an empirical magnetic field model

    TianQin (TQ) project plans to deploy three satellites in space around the Earth to measure the displacement change of test masses caused by gravitational waves via laser interferometry. The requirement of the acceleration noise of the test mass is on the order of 10−15  m s−2 Hz−1/210^{-15}~\,{\rm m}\,{\rm s}^{-2}\,{\rm Hz}^{-1/2} in the sensitive frequency range of TQ, %the extremely precise acceleration measurement requirements make it necessary to investigate acceleration noise due to space magnetic fields. which is so stringent that the acceleration noise caused by the interaction of the space magnetic field with the test mass needs to be investigated. In this work, by using the Tsyganenko model, a data-based empirical space magnetic field model, we obtain the magnetic field distribution around TQ's orbit spanning two solar cycles in 23 years from 1998 to 2020. With the obtained space magnetic field, we derive the distribution and amplitude spectral densities (ASDs) of the acceleration noise of TQ in 23 years. Our results reveal that the average values of the ratio of the acceleration noise cauesd by the space magnetic field to the requirements of TQ at 1 mHz (R1mHzR_{\rm 1mHz}) and 6 mHz (R6mHzR_{\rm 6mHz}) are 0.123±\pm0.052 and 0.027±\pm0.013, respectively. The occurence probabilities of R1mHz>0.2R_{\rm 1mHz}>0.2 and >0.3>0.3 are only 7.9% and 1.2%, respectively, and R6mHzR_{\rm 6mHz} never exceeds 0.2.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, Published in PR

    Particle removal effectiveness of portable air purifiers in aged-care centers and the impact on the health of older people

    Airborne particulate matter (PM) is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease, and the elderly are more susceptible to the adverse effects of PM due to weakened immunity. In China, the use of portable air purifiers is a common method to reduce indoor PM pollution but few studies have evaluated the purification efficiency of portable air purifiers in the aged-care center under real living conditions. To evaluate the PM removal effectiveness of portable air purifiers in aged-care centers and the improvement of cardiovascular function of the elderly, a randomized double-blind crossover study was conducted in 16 rooms of an aged-care center in Yubei District, Chongqing, China in January 2020. The true purifiers and the sham purifiers (just remove filter gauzes) are used alternately in the elderly's room, then the blood pressure and heart rate of elderly participants were tested. The study found that indoor PM concentration decreased rapidly within the first 2 h after turning on the air purifier, which can make indoor PM2.5 concentration lower than the WHO threshold. The air purifiers’ mean removal effectiveness of PM in the aged-care center is 73%, which is significantly affected by the window states. According to the multiple linear regression model, the factors predicting the PM concentration in aged-care centers are the usage of air purifiers, weather conditions and window states. Linear mixed-effect models were used to associate blood pressure and heart rate with air purification, which was found that indoor air purification was associated with a significant decrease in heart rate. This study indicates that portable air purifier is effective in improving aged-care center air quality, which is of great significance in improving the elderly cardiovascular health and providing guidance for the use of air purifiers in aged-care centers
