    Government environmental information disclosure and corporate carbon performance

    Environmental problem is the key to the healthy development of China’s eco-economy, and the environmental responsibility of micro-enterprises under the vision of “Dual Carbon” has attracted more attention. Under the effect of formal environmental regulation, firms will improve their environmental performance by improving technology and resource utilization. As an informal environmental system, can government environmental information disclosure (GEID) guide firms to actively carry out green innovation, ultimately improve the carbon emission problem of firms, have a positive impact on the carbon performance of enterprises, and provide strong support to protect ecological environment? To address this question, this study used the Pollution Information Transparency Index (PITI) to measure GEID, and empirically tested the impact of GEID on corporate carbon performance using a sample of listed companies involved in China’s mining and manufacturing industries from 2013 to 2018. The study found that the higher the degree of GEID, the better was the corporate carbon performance. However, the improved public participation weakened the effect of GEID on corporate carbon performance. GEID reduced the carbon emission intensity of firms and improved their carbon performance via green innovation. Further research indicated that the enhanced GEID in state-owned enterprises significantly improved carbon performance of firms. This study provides empirical evidence for GEID to improve corporate carbon performance, and also proposes a policy strategy for the government to guide firms to undertake green innovation and promote firms to improve efficient carbon use

    Assessment of the feasibility and coverage of a modified universal hearing screening protocol for use with newborn babies of migrant workers in Beijing

    BACKGROUND: Although migrant workers account for the majority of newborns in Beijing, their children are less likely to undergo appropriate universal newborn hearing screening/rescreening (UNHS) than newborns of local non-migrant residents. We hypothesised that this was at least in part due to the inadequacy of the UNHS protocol currently employed for newborn babies, and therefore aimed to modify the protocol to specifically reflect the needs of the migrant population. METHODS: A total of 10,983 healthy babies born to migrant mothers between January 2007 and December 2009 at a Beijing public hospital were investigated for hearing abnormalities according to a modified UNHS protocol. This incorporated two additional/optional otoacoustic emissions (OAE) tests at 24–48 hours and 2 months after birth. Infants not passing a screening test were referred to the next test, until any hearing loss was confirmed by the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test. RESULTS: A total of 98.91% (10983/11104) of all newborn children underwent the initial OAE test, of which 27.22% (2990/10983) failed the test. 1712 of the failed babies underwent the second inpatient OAE test, with739 failing again; thus significantly decreasing the overall positive rate for abnormal hearing from 27.22% to 18.36% ([2990–973 /10983)]; p = 0). Overall, 1147(56.87%) babies underwent the outpatient OAE test again after1-month, of whom 228 failed and were referred for the second outpatient OAE test (i.e. 2.08% (228/10983) referral rate at 1month of age). 141 of these infants underwent the referral test, of whom 103 (73.05%) tested positive again and were referred for a final ABR test for hearing loss (i.e. final referral rate of 1.73% ([228-38/10983] at 2 months of age). Only 54 infants attended the ABR test and 35 (0.32% of the original cohort tested) were diagnosed with abnormal hearing. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that it is feasible and practical to achieve high coverage rates for screening hearing loss and decrease the referral rates in newborn babies of migrant workers, using a modification of the currently employed UNHS protocol

    Intrinsically microporous polymer slows down fuel cell catalyst corrosion

    The limited stability of fuel cell cathode catalysts causes a significant loss of operational cell voltage with commercial Pt-based catalysts, which hinders the wider commercialization of fuel cell technologies. We demonstrate beneficial effects of a highly rigid and porous polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-EA-TB with BET surface area 1027 m2 g−1) in accelerated catalyst corrosion experiments. Porous films of PIM-EA-TB offer an effective protective matrix for the prevention of Pt/C catalyst corrosion without impeding flux of reagents. The results of electrochemical cycling tests show that the PIM-EA-TB protected Pt/C (denoted here as PIM@Pt/C) exhibit a significantly enhanced durability as compared to a conventional Pt/C catalyst.     The NADPARK study: A randomized phase I trial of nicotinamide riboside supplementation in Parkinson’s disease

    We conducted a double-blinded phase I clinical trial to establish whether nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) replenishment therapy, via oral intake of nicotinamide riboside (NR), is safe, augments cerebral NAD levels, and impacts cerebral metabolism in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Thirty newly diagnosed, treatment-naive patients received 1,000 mg NR or placebo for 30 days. NR treatment was well tolerated and led to a significant, but variable, increase in cerebral NAD levels—measured by 31phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy—and related metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid. NR recipients showing increased brain NAD levels exhibited altered cerebral metabolism, measured by 18fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography, and this was associated with mild clinical improvement. NR augmented the NAD metabolome and induced transcriptional upregulation of processes related to mitochondrial, lysosomal, and proteasomal function in blood cells and/or skeletal muscle. Furthermore, NR decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Our findings nominate NR as a potential neuroprotective therapy for PD, warranting further investigation in larger trials.publishedVersio

    A two-step lineage reprogramming strategy to generate functionally competent human hepatocytes from fibroblasts

    Terminally differentiated cells can be generated by lineage reprogramming, which is, however, hindered by incomplete conversion with residual initial cell identity and partial functionality. Here, we demonstrate a new reprogramming strategy by mimicking the natural regeneration route, which permits generating expandable hepatic progenitor cells and functionally competent human hepatocytes. Fibroblasts were first induced into human hepatic progenitor-like cells (hHPLCs), which could robustly expand in vitro and efficiently engraft in vivo. Moreover, hHPLCs could be efficiently induced into mature human hepatocytes (hiHeps) in vitro, whose molecular identity highly resembles primary human hepatocytes (PHHs). Most importantly, hiHeps could be generated in large quantity and were functionally competent to replace PHHs for drug-metabolism estimation, toxicity prediction and hepatitis B virus infection modeling. Our results highlight the advantages of the progenitor stage for successful lineage reprogramming. This strategy is promising for generating other mature human cell types by lineage reprogramming.</p

    The Age-Related Perfusion Pattern Measured With Arterial Spin Labeling MRI in Healthy Subjects

    Aim: To analyze age-related cerebral blood flow (CBF) using arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI in healthy subjects with multivariate principal component analysis (PCA).Methods: 50 healthy subjects (mean age 45.8 ± 18.5 years, range 21–85) had 3D structural MRI and pseudo-continuous ASL MRI at resting state. The relationship between CBF and age was examined with voxel-based univariate analysis using multiple regression and two-sample t-test (median age 41.8 years as a cut-off). An age-related CBF pattern was identified using multivariate PCA.Results: Age correlated negatively with CBF especially anteriorly and in the cerebellum. After adjusting by global value, CBF was relatively decreased with aging in certain regions and relatively increased in others. The age-related CBF pattern showed relative reductions in frontal and parietal areas and cerebellum, and covarying increases in temporal and occipital areas. Subject scores of this pattern correlated negatively with age (R2 = 0.588; P &lt; 0.001) and discriminated between the older and younger subgroups (P &lt; 0.001).Conclusion: A distinct age-related CBF pattern can be identified with multivariate PCA using ASL MRI

    This paper investigates the distributed consensus-based robust adaptive formation control for nonholonomic mobile robots with partially known dynamics. Firstly, multirobot formation control problem has been converted into a state consensus problem. Secondly, the practical control strategies, which incorporate the distributed kinematic controllers and the robust adaptive torque controllers, are designed for solving the formation control problem. Thirdly, the specified reference trajectory for the geometric centroid of the formation is assumed as the trajectory of a virtual leader, whose information is available to only a subset of the followers. Finally, numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approaches
