The importance of voles as pest organisms is well known. Nevertheless, the estimation of financial loss caused by voles is difficult for German fruit growers. We conducted a survey among organic fruit growers to get data on kind and amount of annual damage. Using the available publications and official statistics we calculated economical values of organic apple trees for different types of orchard processing and tree ages.     Expression of Chemoresistance-Related Genes and Heat Shock Protein 72 in Hyperthermic Isolated Limb Perfusion of Malignant Melanoma: An Experimental Study

    Hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (HILP) is considered an established treatment for multiple locoregional intransit metastases in malignant melanoma of the extremities. Various mechanisms such as the expression of chemoresistance genes and heat shock proteins by the tumor may be responsible for varying response rates and locoregional recurrences of the treatment. The aim of the experimental animal study was to investigate the direct impact of HILP on such mechanisms of resistance. Tissue temperature, administration of the cytostatic drug, and duration of perfusion were varied. Expression of the chemoresistance genes mdr1, mrp1, mrp2, and lrp and of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) in the tumor tissue was analysed using RT-PCR and western blot analysis. The untreated SK-MEL-3 tumor expressed mdr1, mrp1, and lrp, but not mrp2. Neither variation of temperature, administration of the cytostatic drug, nor duration of perfusion changed the expression of this “resistance pattern”. In contrast to the cytostatic drug, hyperthermia causes a persistent induction of HSP72. Both observations could offer a potential explanation for failure of HILP in malignant melanoma

    Predicting hormesis in mixtures of herbicidal compounds – where are we and how far can we go?

    Predicting the occurrence and expression of stimulatory effects of subtoxic doses of phytotoxins or herbicides (hormesis) in mixtures is a challenging and needed task, considering that herbicide exposures in practice often occur in mixtures at low doses due to drift deposition, errors in application, protection by mulch, herbicide resistance, small-scale dose heterogeneity, and other causes. While joint effects in toxin mixtures can be straightforwardly modelled and predicted at toxic doses, the evaluation at stimulatory doses lacks a common statistical approach. Prediction of effective hormetic doses can be adequately facilitated by adopting jointaction models that have been developed for monotonic responses. In contrast, prediction of the magnitude of hormesis as one of the key quantitative features of hormesis is not so easy. Currently, there are no mechanistic models available that could be adopted to predict the hormetic magnitude in mixtures nor is there a generally accepted model available. Nevertheless, some promising attempts were made to predict the hormetic magnitude in herbicidal mixtures demonstrating the fundamental possibility of modelling hormesis in mixtures and providing valuable insights into the phenomenon. The success of these attempts is summarized and future research needs and limits are discussed

    Optimizing of preoperative computed tomography for diagnosis in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background and Objective</p> <p>This study evaluates whether Computer Tomography is an effective procedure for preoperative staging of patients with Peritoneal Carcinomatosis.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>A sample of 37 patients was analyzed with contrast enhanced abdominal Computer Tomography, followed by surgical staging. All Computer Tomography scans were evaluated 3 times by 2 radiologists with one radiologist reviewing 2 times. The efficacy of Computer Tomography was evaluated using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Correlations were analyzed by abdominopelvic region to assess results of the Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Index (PCI) aggregating the 13 regions. Surgical findings were compared to radiological findings.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results indicate high correlations between the surgical and radiological Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Indices. Analyses of the intra-class correlation between the first and second reading of one radiologist suggest high intra-observer reliability. Correlations by abdominopelvic region show higher values in the upper and middle regions and relatively lower values in the lower regions and the small bowel (correlation coefficients range between 0.418 and 0.726, p < 0.010; sensitivities range between 50% and 96%; and specificities range between 62% and 100%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Computer Tomography represents an effective procedure in the preoperative staging of patients with PC. However, results by abdominopelvic region show lower correlation, therefore suggest lower efficacy. These results are supported by analyses of sensitivity and accuracy by lesion size. This suggests that Computer Tomography is an effective procedure for pre-operative staging but less for determining a tumor's accurate extent.</p

    Universal conductance fluctuations in three dimensional metallic single crystals of Si

    In this paper we report the measurement of conductance fluctuations in single crystals of Si made metallic by heavy doping (n \approx 2-2.5n_c, n_c being critical composition at Metal-Insulator transition). Since all dimensions (L) of the samples are much larger than the electron phase coherent length L_\phi (L/L_\phi \sim 10^3), our system is truly three dimensional. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of noise strongly indicate the universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) as predominant source of the observed magnitude of noise. Conductance fluctuations within a single phase coherent region of L_\phi^3 was found to be saturated at \approx (e^2/h)^2. An accurate knowledge of the level of disorder, enables us to calculate the change in conductance \delta G_1 due to movement of a single scatterer as \delta G_1 \sim e^2/h, which is \sim 2 orders of magnitude higher than its theoretically expected value in 3D systems.Comment: Text revised version. 4 eps figs unchange

    A case of successful multi-stage surgical treatment of liver echinococcosis

    A clinical case of successful radical multi-stage surgical treatment of a patient with bilobar parasitic lesion of the liver with echinococcosis complicated by infection of one of the cysts is presented. The patient was admitted to the clinic with volumetric lesions in both lobes of the liver. At the stage of differential diagnosis, on the basis of process verification by puncture biopsy under ultrasound control, the ethiology of mass lesions was reliably established. At the primary stationary stage, infection of one of the echinococcal cysts was diagnosed, for which the cyst was drained under ultrasound control. After that, the patient was discharged to the outpatient care for compensation, correction of the general level of health and nutritional status. At the next stage of the inpatient examination, the patient was determined to have an insufficient level of functional reserves of the liver to perform a radical operation. For this reason, laparoscopic ligation of the right branch of the portal vein was performed in order to develop vicarious hypertrophy of the contralateral lobe. After 30 days, the increased level of functional reserves of the liver made it possible to plan radical surgical treatment with an acceptable risk for the patient. The operation was performed in the amount of right-sided extended hemihepatectomy with marginal resection of the 3rd segment of the liver. The symptoms of liver failure in the postoperative period according to the ISGLS scale were regarded as Grade A. The patient was discharged from the hospital in a satisfactory condition on day 10 after the operation. In the postoperative period, courses of therapy with albendazole were prescribed according to the standard scheme. The patient is under observation for more than a year after treatment. The condition is satisfactory. No recurrence of the disease was noted

    Evaluation of Best Supportive Care and Systemic Chemotherapy as Treatment Stratified according to the retrospective Peritoneal Surface Disease Severity Score (PSDSS) for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis of Colorectal Origin

    Background: We evaluate the long-term survival of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) treated with systemic chemotherapy regimens, and the impact of the of the retrospective peritoneal disease severity score (PSDSS) on outcomes. Methods: One hundred sixty-seven consecutive patients treated with PC from colorectal cancer between years 1987-2006 were identified from a prospective institutional database. These patients either received no chemotherapy, 5-FU/Leucovorin or Oxaliplatin/Irinotecan-based chemotherapy. Stratification was made according to the retrospective PSDSS that classifies PC patients based on clinically relevant factors. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and comparison with the log-rank test. Results: Median survival was 5 months (95% CI, 3-7 months) for patients who had no chemotherapy, 11 months (95% CI, 6-9 months) for patients treated with 5 FU/LV, and 12 months (95% CI, 4-20 months) for patients treated with Oxaliplatin/Irinotecan-based chemotherapy. Survival differed between patients treated with chemotherapy compared to those patients who did not receive chemotherapy (p = 0.026). PSDSS staging was identified as an independent predictor for survival on multivariate analysis [RR 2.8 (95%CI 1.5-5.4); p < 0.001]. Conclusion: A trend towards improved outcomes is demonstrated from treatment of patients with PC from colorectal cancer using modern systemic chemotherapy. The PSDSS appears to be a useful tool in patient selection and prognostication in PC of colorectal origin

    A new survival model for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in tumor-bearing rats in the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis

    BACKGROUND: Cytoreduction followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) improves survival in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of colorectal origin. Animal models are important in the evaluation of new treatment modalities. The purpose of this study was to devise an experimental setting which can be routinely used for the investigation of HIPEC in peritoneal carcinomatosis. METHODS: A new peritoneal perfusion system in tumor bearing rats were tested. For this purpose CC531 colon carcinoma cells were implanted intraperitoneally in Wag/Rija rats. After 10 days of tumor growth the animals were randomized into three groups of six animals each: group 1: control (n = 6), group 2: HIPEC with mitomycin C in a concentration of 15 mg/m(2 )(n = 6), group III: mitomycin C i.p. as monotherapy in a concentration of 10 mg/m(2 )(n = 6). After 10 days, total tumor weight and the extent of tumor spread, as classified by the modified Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), were assessed by autopsy of the animals. RESULTS: No postoperative deaths were observed. Conjunctivitis, lethargy and loss of appetite were the main side effects in the HIPEC group. No severe locoregional or systemic toxity was observed. All control animals developed massive tumor growth. Tumor load was significantly reduced in the treatment group and was lowest in group II. CONCLUSION: The combination of hyperthermia with MMC resulted in an increased tumoricidal effect in the rat model. The presented model provides an opportunity to study the mechanism and effect of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and new drugs for this treatment modality
