    REDD+ on the rocks? Conflict over forest and politics of justice in Vietnam

    In Vietnam, villagers involved in a REDD+ (reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) pilot protect areas with rocks which have barely a tree on them. The apparent paradox indicates how actual practices differ from general ideas about REDD+ due to ongoing conflict over forest, and how contestations over the meaning of justice are a core element in negotiations over REDD+. We explore these politics of justice by examining how the actors involved in the REDD+ pilot negotiate the particular subjects, dimensions, and authority of justice considered relevant, and show how politics of justice are implicit to practical decisions in project implementation. Contestations over the meaning of justice are an important element in the practices and processes constituting REDD+ at global, national and local levels, challenging uniform definitions of forest justice and how forests ought to be managed

    On Braggarts and Gossips: Why Consumers Generate Positive but Transmit Negative Word-of-Mouth

    Past research has presented conflicting evidence as to whether consumers are more likely to share positive or negative word-of-mouth. We offer a novel theoretical perspective to reconcile this conflict by comparing the generation of word-of-mouth (i.e., consumers sharing information about their own experiences) to the transmission of word-of-mouth (i.e., consumers passing-on information about experiences they heard occurred to others). We suggest that the self-enhancement motive leads consumers to generate positive word-of-mouth, but also to transmit negative word-of-mouth. Evidence for self-enhancement motives playing out in a unique fashion at word-of-mouth generation and transmission is presented across a series of four experiments

    Mutations in the SPG3A gene represent a significant cause of autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia with early onset and pure phenotype. We describe an Italian family manifesting a complex phenotype, characterized by cerebellar involvement in the proband and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-like syndrome in her father, in association with a new mutation in SPG3A. Our findings further widen the notion of clinical heterogeneity in SPG3A mutations

    Traversing the margins of corruption amidst informal economies in Amazonia

    This article focuses on local idioms of extra-legal economic activity among indigenous Amazonians in eastern Peru, and its overall argument is that these idioms are part of a broader context in which indigenous people are compelled by a variety of factors to act in a seemingly corrupt manner. I further suggest that within such a context these idioms are not confined to the informal economy but are also used to refer to activities that fall within the formal economy, supporting Hart’s (2009) claim that the informal economy is a way of imagining the orthodox economy. I argue that corruption within Amazonian economies is commonly perceived by non-indigenous people as contrasting with the workings of the orthodox economy without proper consideration of the economic conditions and bureaucratic structures that give rise to it. Lastly, I argue that, here, corruption can contravene bureaucracy by restoring the humanity that Herzfeld (1993) claims bureaucracy rejects through its acts of indifference toward individuals

    Expression of progesterone receptor membrane component-1 in bovine reproductive system during estrous cycle

    Several reports suggest the participation of progesterone receptor membrane component 1 (PGRMC1) in progesterone signaling in the reproductive system. This study aimed at investigating the presence and localization of PGRMC1 in bovine ovary, oviduct and uterus, during the follicular and luteal phases of the estrous cycle. In the ovary, PGRMC1 has been detected in surface germinal epithelium, granulosa cells, theca cells and in the germinal vesicle of the oocytes at all stages of folliculogenesis. In the corpus luteum the expression of PGRMC1 was influenced by the stage of the estrous cycle. In the oviducts and in the uterus horns, PGRMC1 was immunolocalized in the luminal epithelium, in the muscle layer cells and in the endothelial cells. In the uterus, PGRMC1 was intensely localized also in the glandular endometrium. However, in the oviducts and in the uterus horns, the localization of PGRMC1 was independent on the stage of the estrous cycle and on whether evaluating the ipsilateral or the contralateral organ. In conclusion, the present immunohistochemical study showed that PGRMC1 is located in various compartments of the bovine female reproductive organs. With the exception of the corpora lutea, PGRMC1 localization showed similar pattern during different stages of the estrous cycle

    A methodology for the development of a Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthosis compatible with natural joint kinematics

    This work presents a new concept to design Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthoses (HAFOs), based on the definition of a special mechanical articulation able to mimic the physiological behavior of the human ankle joint. Current commercial braces typically do not take into account the natural variability of the ankle joint axis. As the hinge location as well as the rotation axis variability are both relevant for the overall function of the device, and strongly depend on the subject-specific characteristics, a methodology for the development of a HAFO with a floating axis of rotation, based on the in-vivo kinematic analysis of the ankle joint, is here proposed. The kinematic analysis was performed by calculation of the instantaneous and mean helical axes over the collected stereo-photogrammetric data of joint motion. This procedure was tested on a healthy subject, leading to the design and fabrication of a first customized prototype of the orthosis. The performance of this HAFO was experimentally verified by motion analysis. All relevant results are presented, and further possible future improvements of the procedure are discussed

    Self-Assembly of Polyhedral Hybrid Colloidal Particles

    We have developed a new method to produce hybrid particles with polyhedral shapes in very high yield (liter quantities at up to 70% purity) using a combination of emulsion polymerization and inorganic surface chemistry. The procedure has been generalized to create complex geometries, including hybrid line segments, triangles, tetrahedra, octahedra, and more. The optical properties of these particles are tailored for studying their dynamics and self-assembly. For example, we produce systems that consist of index-matched spheres allowing us to define the position of each elementary particle in three-dimensional space.     Muse stem cells can be isolated from stromal compartment of mouse bone marrow, adipose tissue, and ear connective tissue: A comparative study of their in vitro properties

    The cells present in the stromal compartment of many tissues are a heterogeneous population containing stem cells, progenitor cells, fibroblasts, and other stromal cells. A SSEA3(+) cell subpopulation isolated from human stromal compartments showed stem cell properties. These cells, known as multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (MUSE) cells, are capable of resisting stress and possess an excellent ability to repair DNA damage. We isolated MUSE cells from different mouse stromal compartments, such as those present in bone marrow, subcutaneous white adipose tissue, and ear connective tissue. These cells showed overlapping in vitro biological properties. The mouse MUSE cells were positive for stemness markers such as SOX2, OCT3/4, and NANOG. They also expressed TERT, the catalytic telomerase subunit. The mouse MUSE cells showed spontaneous commitment to differentiation in meso/ecto/endodermal derivatives. The demonstration that mul-tilineage stem cells can be isolated from an animal model, such as the mouse, could offer a valid alternative to the use of other stem cells for disease studies and envisage of cellular therapies
