La Casa de la Reina en la Corona de Castilla (1418-1496)

La Casa de la reina hace referencia a un complejo organismo formado por un heterogéneo conjunto de oficiales y servidores en torno a su titular. En ella se daban cita burócratas de formación universitaria, clérigos y el personal dedicado al servicio de la mesa de la soberana, además de las damas y doncellas que componían el séquito de la reina, procedentes de la nobleza castellana. El rastreo de este nutrido grupo de personas que gravitan en torno a la esposa del rey de Castilla se convierte a menudo en una difícil tarea que resulta, sin embargo, de gran interés a la hora de comprender la red de relaciones que se construye a propósito. En esta obra se pretende presentar un listado de las diferentes categorías de servicio que se registran en las Casas de las reinas María de Aragón (1418-1445) e Isabel de Portugal (1447-1496), y tratar de averiguar qué personas las desempeñaban. Por otro lado, también se ponen en relación los contactos entre las diferentes Casas reales con las que convivía la de la reina, con el fin de ofrecer recursos interpretativos para entender el funcionamiento de las redes de poder que se construían en la corte de la Corona de Castilla al final de la Edad Media

The Households of the Princesses: Service and Representation through the first Household of <em>Infanta</em> Leonor of Aragon (1366-1375)

The court service of queens and infantas demonstrates the complexity and changing nature of its composition over time. These are not only changes brought about by the needs of the service itself, but also by political issues, family alliances, and questions of representation. The courtly customs of each kingdom generate a particular identity, while at the same time offering protection to their caregivers and safeguarding the interests of their kingdom of origin. This paper looks at the particular case of the entourage that accompanied Leonor of Aragon on her first trip to Castile (1366), to celebrate the entry into the kingdom of Enrique of Trastamara, and his subsequent coronation. This episode was selected because it combines the incorporation of the Infanta into the entourage of her future mother-in-law, Juana Manuel de Villena, long before her marriage, and also because it reveals the strength of the political and military interests of her father, King Pedro IV of Aragon. As the Infanta was an eight-year-old maid, the role of her officers and servants is key, due to the tasks they performed and the decisions they took to protect the Infanta and the image of the Crown of Aragon

Queen's Palaces and Political Communication at the Castilian Court (13th-15th centuries)

The Queen's lodgins help the royal couple spread their image across the kingdom, but they can also challenge king's authority or even displace the king. This article focuses on the study of the spaces occupied by the Castilian queens, inside and outside their chambers, and how they become involved in the courtly politics.Los hospedajes de la reina ayudan a la pareja real a diseminar su imagen por el territorio, pero también pueden ser un desafío a su autoridad o, incluso, mostrar su capacidad para desplazar al rey. El fenómeno de la peregrinación a Compostela en las cortes ibéricas. Devoción y política en clave femenina en la Baja Edad Media

La reina es una pieza clave en la política religiosa del reino, tanto por su promoción espiritual como por su valor representativo para la monarquía. Este hecho propicia su participación en la recepción de las comitivas que llegan rumbo a Santiago, y también su relevancia a la hora de peregrinar a Compostela, ya sea por un sentido devocional o por un propósito dinástico o político. Casos como el de la reina de Aragón, María de Castilla, reflejan su capacidad como benefactoras de los peregrinos y cómo se estimula el diálogo entre las cortes ibéricas para recibirlos y agasajarlos

Introduction: The Iberian Queen’s Households: Dynamics, Social Strategies, and Royal Power

  The study of royal households has undergone a remarkable development in recent years. Thanks to the appearance of works on their composition, family strategies, or specific people at the service of queens and infantas, it is possible to raise new analytical questions, or to focus on lesser-known stages, such as the queens’ youth. The company and service of officers, ladies-in-waiting, maidens, or servants contributed to the creation of a “circle of security” for the infanta and later for the queen, but also of a political instrument, and even of a cultural agent if necessary. The examination of the royal environment of Iberian queens and infantas allows us to understand exchanges in court codes and etiquette, or the demonstration of royal authority over a bordering territory. The comparative study of the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula reflects the ability of royal women when it comes to introducing changes in the composition of the household, as well as being key to understanding the motivations of the personnel at their service. Thus, the objectives of this monographic issue are vindication of queenly authority from the first demonstrations of her political capacity, and contextualization of the changes and decisions orchestrated within the queen’s household through some previously unknown cases in the Late Middle Ages and the early modern eras.

La Historia de las Mujeres en el siglo XXI a través del estudio de la Reginalidad medieval

Resumen: De acuerdo con el notable incremento que han manifestado los estudios relacionados con las mujeres y el poder en la Edad Media, el presente trabajo pretende exponer algunas de las líneas más destacadas al respecto. Tras una presentación general de los temas tratados en los últimos años, nuestra atención se centrará en la repercusión que la reginalidad y el poder relacional están teniendo en la historiografía actual, por entender que ese aspecto constituye un buen observatorio para presentar lo realizado en diversos campos de estudio. A partir de las investigaciones desarrolladas tanto en EE.UU. como en Europa, se puede observar la carga simbólica y el patrocinio cultural femenino, así como la gestión de sus tierras o la extensión de su autoridad a través de sus servidores. Con el fin de conocer la importancia de la reina y las grandes nobles en la corte medieval y en el poder monárquico, se valorarán las diferentes perspectivas y ópticas desde las que abordar este sujeto histórico.Palabras clave: Historiografía, Reinas, Historia de las Mujeres, Poder, Edad Media. Abstract: Women’s Studies have experienced an important expansion in the last years, specially focused in the relationship between women and power. In this sense, this work pretends expound the essential trends about this. Our analysis will be centred in the studies about the medieval Queenship and the partnership of the queen with the other characters of the Court, although, previously, we will develop a synthesis of the principal historiographical advances on Women’s Studies. The works of many American and European researchers, demonstrate the symbolic power of the queen and the female cultural patronage, as well as her seigniorial and government functions, or the importance of her allies network.
