Identification of non-ordinary mesons from the dispersive connection between their poles and their Regge trajectories: the f0(500) resonance
We show how the Regge trajectory of a resonance can be obtained from its pole
in a scattering process and analytic constraints in the complex angular
momentum plane. The method is suited for resonances that dominate an elastic
scattering amplitude. In particular, from the rho(770) resonance pole in
pion-pion scattering, we obtain its linear Regge trajectory, characteristic of
ordinary quark-antiquark states. In contrast, the f0(500) pole -the sigma
meson- which dominates scalar isoscalar pion-pion scattering, yields a
non-linear trajectory with a much smaller slope at the f0(500) mass.
Conversely, imposing a linear Regge trajectory for the f0(500), with a slope of
typical size, yields an elastic amplitude at odds with the data. This provides
strong support for the non-ordinary nature of the sigma meson.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Meteotsunamis and other anomalous ātidal surgeā events in Western Europe in Summer 2022
We investigate occurrences of anomalous tidal activity in coastal waters of north-west Europe during Summer 2022. Sightings of an anomalous ātidal surgeā occurred on 18 June 2022 in Wales, followed by similar observations in Ireland, France, and Spain. Several anomalous long-wave events were also reported in south England and Wales in the morning of 19 July 2022. We analyzed surface and high-altitude air pressure fields, and sea level oscillations for both days. Our detailed analysis reveals that the 18 June events were a series of meteotsunamis, propagating over several countries in Western Europe and triggered by localized pressure perturbations, originating within a low-pressure area over the North Atlantic Ocean. A local analysis of the southern coast of Ireland suggests that Proudman resonance was the determinant mechanism that amplified the meteotsunami traveling eastward in the afternoon of 18 June. A similar analysis of the 19 July events suggests that the tidal surge reported in the UK and anomalous signals recorded in Ireland and France were episodes of seiching triggered by infragravity waves, resonated subharmonically by wind waves. Numerical simulations of the 18 June event were performed with Volna-OP2, which solves the non-linear shallow water equations using a finite volume discretization. High prevalence of scrapie in a dairy goat herd: tissue distribution of disease-associated PrP and effect of PRNP genotype and age
Following a severe outbreak of clinical scrapie in 2006ā2007, a
large dairy goat herd was culled
and 200 animals were selected for post-mortem examinations in order to
ascertain the prevalence of infection,
the effect of age, breed and PRNP genotype on the susceptibility to scrapie,
the tissue distribution of diseaseassociated
PrP (PrP), and the comparative efficiency of different diagnostic methods.
As determined by immunohistochemical (IHC) examinations with Bar224 PrP antibody, the
prevalence of preclinical infection
was very high (72/200; 36.0%), with most infected animals being positive
for PrP in lymphoreticular system
(LRS) tissues (68/72; 94.4%) compared to those that were positive in
brain samples (38/72; 52.8%). The
retropharyngeal lymph node and the palatine tonsil showed the highest
frequency of PrP accumulation (87.3%
and 84.5%, respectively), while the recto-anal mucosa-associated lymphoid
tissue (RAMALT) was positive in
only 30 (41.7%) of the infected goats. However, the efficiency of rectal
and palatine tonsil biopsies taken
shortly before necropsy was similar. The probability of brain and RAMALT
being positive directly
correlated with the spread of PrP within the LRS. The prevalence of
infection was influenced by PRNP
genetics at codon 142 and by the age of the goats: methionine carriers older
than 60 months showed a much
lower prevalence of infection (12/78; 15.4%) than those younger than 60Ā months (20/42; 47.6%); these last
showed prevalence values similar to isoleucine homozygotes of any age
(40/80; 50.0%). Two of seven goats
with definite signs of scrapie were negative for PrP in brain but positive
in LRS tissues, and one goat showed
biochemical and IHC features of PrP different from all other infected
goats. The results of this study have
implications for surveillance and control policies for scrapie in goats

Misalignments: Challenges in Cultivating Science Faculty with Education Specialties in Your Department
Science Faculty with Education Specialties (SFES) are increasingly being hired across the United States. However, little is known about the motivations for SFES hiring or the potential or actual impact of SFES. In the context of a recent national survey of US SFES, we investigated SFES perceptions about these issues. Strikingly, perceptions about reasons for hiring SFES were poorly aligned with perceptions about potential and actual contributions reported by SFES themselves, and the advice they extended to beginning SFES was varied. While preparation of future teachers and departmental teaching needs were common reasons offered for SFES hiring, the potential and actual contributions of SFES highlighted instead their roles as pedagogical resources and as contributors to curricular reform. Misalignments between SFES perceptions about what motivates SFES hiring and their perceptions of their most valuable contributions present challenges for those interested in maximizing the impact of SFES
Stable two-dimensional solitary pulses in linearly coupled dissipative Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations
A two-dimensional (2D) generalization of the stabilized Kuramoto -
Sivashinsky (KS) system is presented. It is based on the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili
(KP) equation including dissipation of the generic (Newell -- Whitehead --
Segel, NWS) type and gain. The system directly applies to the description of
gravity-capillary waves on the surface of a liquid layer flowing down an
inclined plane, with a surfactant diffusing along the layer's surface.
Actually, the model is quite general, offering a simple way to stabilize
nonlinear waves in media combining the weakly-2D dispersion of the KP type with
gain and NWS dissipation. Parallel to this, another model is introduced, whose
dissipative terms are isotropic, rather than of the NWS type. Both models
include an additional linear equation of the advection-diffusion type, linearly
coupled to the main KP-NWS equation. The extra equation provides for stability
of the zero background in the system, opening a way to the existence of stable
localized pulses. The consideration is focused on the case when the dispersive
part of the system of the KP-I type, admitting the existence of 2D localized
pulses. Treating the dissipation and gain as small perturbations and making use
of the balance equation for the field momentum, we find that the equilibrium
between the gain and losses may select two 2D solitons, from their continuous
family existing in the conservative counterpart of the model (the latter family
is found in an exact analytical form). The selected soliton with the larger
amplitude is expected to be stable. Direct simulations completely corroborate

A Decadal Inversion of CO2 Using the Global Eulerian-Lagrangian Coupled Atmospheric Model (GELCA): Sensitivity to the Ground-Based Observation Network
We present an assimilation system for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) using a Global Eulerian-Lagrangian Coupled Atmospheric model (GELCA), and demonstrate its capability to capture the observed atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios and to estimate CO2 fluxes. With the efficient data handling scheme in GELCA, our system assimilates non-smoothed CO2 data from observational data products such as the Observation Package (ObsPack) data products as constraints on surface fluxes. We conducted sensitivity tests to examine the impact of the site selections and the prior uncertainty settings of observation on the inversion results. For these sensitivity tests, we made five different sitedata selections from the ObsPack product. In all cases, the time series of the global net CO2 flux to the atmosphere stayed close to values calculated from the growth rate of the observed global mean atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio. At regional scales, estimated seasonal CO2 fluxes were altered, depending on the CO2 data selected for assimilation. Uncertainty reductions (URs) were determined at the regional scale and compared among cases. As measures of the model-data mismatch, we used the model-data bias, root-mean-square error, and the linear correlation. For most observation sites, the model-data mismatch was reasonably small. Regarding regional flux estimates, tropical Asia was one of the regions that showed a significant impact from the observation network settings. We found that the surface fluxes in tropical Asia were the most sensitive to the use of aircraft measurements over the Pacific, and the seasonal cycle agreed better with the results of bottom-up studies when the aircraft measurements were assimilated. These results confirm the importance of these aircraft observations, especially for constraining surface fluxes in the tropics
