    3D modelling of long-term sulfide corrosion of copper canisters in a spent nuclear fuel repository

    Copper canisters are a central component in the safety of the Finnish spent fuel repository concept (KBS-3), where the main corrodent potentially affecting the canister integrity is sulfide. In this study, a 3D numerical model is developed to assess the evolution of sulfide fluxes and the spatially resolved canister corrosion depths for the Finnish spent nuclear fuel repository concept. The backfilled tunnel and the disposal hole are implemented using repository geometries, with sulfide being produced at their interface with the rock (excavation damaged zone) by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). Recent experimental findings regarding the microbial sulfate reduction process as well as the scavenging of sulfide via iron (oxy)hydroxides are incorporated in the reactive transport model. Long-term simulations are performed, predicting a heterogeneous corrosion of the canister with a max. corrosion depth of 1.3 mm at the bottom corner after one million years. The evolution of sulfide fluxes shows two main phases, depending on the source of sulfate: first sulfate is supplied by the dissolution of gypsum from the bentonite barriers, followed by a steady, low-level supply from the groundwater. Sensitivity cases demonstrate that both the organic carbon and Fe(III) oxide contents in the bentonite are critical to the corrosion evolution, by being the main electron donor for SRB activities and the major sulfide scavenger in the bentonite, respectively. The backfilled tunnel contributes little to the flux of corrosive sulfide to the canister due to the attenuation by Fe(III)-oxides/hydroxides but induces a notable flux of sulfate into the disposal hole

    Federated Similarity-Based Learning with Incomplete Data

    In the analysis of social, medical, and business issues, the problem of incomplete data often arises. In addition, in situations where privacy policy makes it difficult to share data with organizations conducting related activities, it is necessary to exchange knowledge instead of data, that is, to use federated learning. In this scenario there are several private data clients, whose models are improved through the aggregation of model components. Here, we propose a methodology for training local models to deal well with missing data, with an algorithm using similarity measures that take into account the uncertainty present in many types of data, such as medical data. Therefore, this paper describes a federated learning model capable of processing imprecise and missing data. Federated learning is a technique to overcome limitations resulting from data governance and privacy by training algorithms without exchanging the data itself. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated using medical data on breast cancer cases. Results for different data loss scenarios and corresponding measures of classification quality are presented and discussed

    Ego boundaries, shamanic-like techniques, and subjective experience : an experimental study

    The subjective effects and therapeutic potential of the shamanic practice of journeying is well known. However, previous research has neglected to provide a comprehensive assessment of the subjective effects of shamanic-like journeying techniques on non-shamans. Shamanic-like techniques are those that demonstrate some similarity to shamanic practices and yet deviate from what may genuinely be considered shamanism. Furthermore, the personality traits that influence individual susceptibility to shamanic-like techniques are unclear. The aim of the present study was, thus, to investigate experimentally the effect of shamanic-like techniques and a personality trait referred to as &quot;ego boundaries&quot; on subjective experience including mood disturbance. Forty-three non-shamans were administered a composite questionnaire consisting of demographic items and a measure of ego boundaries (i.e., the Short Boundary Questionnaire; BQ-Sh). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: listening to monotonous drumming for 15 minutes coupled with one of two sets of journeying instructions; or sitting quietly with eyes closed for 15 minutes. Participants\u27 subjective experience and mood disturbance were retrospectively assessed using the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) and the Profile of Mood States-Short Form, respectively. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between conditions with regard to the PCI major dimensions of visual imagery, attention and rationality, and minor dimensions of imagery amount and absorption. However, the shamanic-like conditions were not associated with a major reorganization of the pattern of subjective experience compared to the sitting quietly condition, suggesting that what is typically referred to as an altered state of consciousness effect was not evident. One shamanic-like condition and the BQ-Sh subscales need for order, childlikeness, and sensitivity were statistically significant predictors of total mood disturbance. Implications of the findings for the anthropology of consciousness are also considered.<br /

    Cryo-EM confirms a common fibril fold in the heart of four patients with ATTRwt amyloidosis

    ATTR amyloidosis results from the conversion of transthyretin into amyloid fibrils that deposit in tissues causing organ failure and death. This conversion is facilitated by mutations in ATTRv amyloidosis, or aging in ATTRwt amyloidosis. ATTRv amyloidosis exhibits extreme phenotypic variability, whereas ATTRwt amyloidosis presentation is consistent and predictable. Previously, we found an unprecedented structural variability in cardiac amyloid fibrils from polyneuropathic ATTRv-I84S patients. In contrast, cardiac fibrils from five genotypically-different patients with cardiomyopathy or mixed phenotypes are structurally homogeneous. To understand fibril structure's impact on phenotype, it is necessary to study the fibrils from multiple patients sharing genotype and phenotype. Here we show the cryo-electron microscopy structures of fibrils extracted from four cardiomyopathic ATTRwt amyloidosis patients. Our study confirms that they share identical conformations with minimal structural variability, consistent with their homogenous clinical presentation. Our study contributes to the understanding of ATTR amyloidosis biopathology and calls for further studies
