    Effect of Auction Design on Bidder Entry: Evidence from An Online Labor Market

    We propose that auction duration and auction description are two important auction design parameters that could serve as screening mechanisms for quality in online auctions. Using data from an online labor matching platform that connects buyers with IT service vendors, we examine the effects of auction duration and auction descriptions on auction outcomes (i.e., number of bids, bidder quality, bidding price) and project outcomes (i.e., project being contracted and being completed). Our empirical analyses show that, in buyer-determined reverse auctions of online labor matching, auctions with a longer duration and a longer description attract more bids, but they also attract more low quality bidders with less experience and lower completion rate, and hence result in a lower probability of successful contracting and completion of software service projects. Our research provides empirical evidence highlighting the strategic roles of auction design parameters like auction duration and descriptions as a potential screening mechanism for online labor matching platforms

    A data acquisition system for Computerized Numerical Control Gear Measurement Center was developed, in which Field-Programmable Gate Array was used as the control core instead of traditional single-chip microcomputer or Digital Signal Processor, First-In First-Out buffer to hold data, and personal computer bus as data transmission unit. The system performs multichannel data acquisition more efficiently, higher precision and higher rate in real time than the traditional ones. Experimental comparison indicates that the data gathering rate increase twice to 10 kHz, and the uniformly-spaced error is in 1 μm

    Superfluid and magnetic states of an ultracold Bose gas with synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in an optical lattice

    We study ultracold bosonic atoms with the synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a cubic optical lattice. In the superfluidity phase, the lowest energy band exhibits one, two or four pairs of degenerate single-particle ground states depending on the SO-coupling strengths, which can give rise to the condensate states with spin-stripes for the weak atomic interactions. In the deep Mott-insulator regime, the effective spin Hamiltonian of the system combines three-dimensional Heisenberg exchange interactions, anisotropy interactions and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically demonstrate that the resulting Hamiltonian with an additional Zeeman field has a rich phase diagram with spiral, stripe, vortex crystal, and especially Skyrmion crystal spin-textures in each xy-plane layer. The obtained Skyrmion crystals can be tunable with square and hexagonal symmetries in a columnar manner along the z axis, and moreover are stable against the inter-layer spin-spin interactions in a large parameter region.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; title modified, references and discussions added; accepted by PR

    Visual Presentation Modes in Online Product Reviews and Their Effects on Consumer Responses

    Online product reviews posted by consumers are becoming a staple part of e-commerce websites. Researchers demonstrate that the volume and strength of online reviews, among others, have a significant impact on consumer responses. These studies have focused on the effect of text-based online reviews, but current information technologies enable the posting of online reviews with higher visual content, such as with images and videos. Using the Elaboration Likelihood Model and Dual Coding theory, we examine the effects of three visual modes for presenting online reviews with three products – backpack, digital camera and video game. Our results indicate that video-based online reviews are perceived as being more credible, helpful, persuasive, and providing a great sense of involvement, compared to text-based and image-based online reviews, but with no significant differences among the latter two. The influence of presentation modes on consumer responses is partially moderated by product type

    Thin-film field-effect transistor is a fundamental component behind various mordern electronics. The development of stretchable electronics poses fundamental challenges in developing new electronic materials for stretchable thin-film transistors that are mechanically compliant and solution processable. Here we report the fabrication of transparent thin-film transistors that behave like an elastomer film. The entire fabrication is carried out by solution-based techniques, and the resulting devices exhibit a mobility of ∼30 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), on/off ratio of 10(3)-10(4), switching current >100 μA, transconductance >50 μS and relative low operating voltages. The devices can be stretched by up to 50% strain and subjected to 500 cycles of repeated stretching to 20% strain without significant loss in electrical property. The thin-film transistors are also used to drive organic light-emitting diodes. The approach and results represent an important progress toward the development of stretchable active-matrix displays

    Europium-doped calcium pyrophosphates : allotropic forms and photoluminescent properties

    In a search for new luminescent biological probes, we synthesized calcium pyrophosphates doped with europium up to an atomic Eu/(Eu+Ca) ratio of 2%. They were prepared by coprecipitating a mixture of calcium and europium salts with phosphate. After heating at 900°C in air, two phases coexisted, identified as the β calcium pyrophosphate form and EuPO4. Heating near 1250°C in air, during the β→ transformation, europium ions substitute for calcium ions in the * calcium pyrophosphate structure as demonstrated by the spectroscopic study. Europium ions with both valence states (divalent and trivalent) were observed in the samples. Following the synthesis procedure, partial reduction of Eu3+ took place even in an oxidizing atmosphere. The 0.5%-doped compound could serve as a sensitive probe in biological applications. Depending on the excitation wavelength, the luminescence occurs either in the red or in the blue regions, which discriminates it from parasitic signals arising from other dyes or organelles in live cells
