    Adiabatic Elimination in a Lambda System

    This paper deals with different ways to extract the effective two-dimensional lower level dynamics of a lambda system excited by off-resonant laser beams. We present a commonly used procedure for elimination of the upper level, and we show that it may lead to ambiguous results. To overcome this problem and better understand the applicability conditions of this scheme, we review two rigorous methods which allow us both to derive an unambiguous effective two-level Hamiltonian of the system and to quantify the accuracy of the approximation achieved: the first one relies on the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation, while the second one resorts to the Green's function formalism and the Feshbach projection operator technique.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Tur\'an Graphs, Stability Number, and Fibonacci Index

    The Fibonacci index of a graph is the number of its stable sets. This parameter is widely studied and has applications in chemical graph theory. In this paper, we establish tight upper bounds for the Fibonacci index in terms of the stability number and the order of general graphs and connected graphs. Tur\'an graphs frequently appear in extremal graph theory. We show that Tur\'an graphs and a connected variant of them are also extremal for these particular problems.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Finite element analysis of stress distribution and the effects of geometry in a laser-generated single-stage ceramic tile grout seal using ANSYS

    Optimisation of the geometry (curvature of the vitrified enamel layer) of a laser-generated single-stage ceramic tile grout seal has carried out with a finite element (FE) model. The overall load bearing capacities and load-displacement plots of three selected geometries were determined experimentally by the indentation technique. Simultaneously, a FE model was developed utilising the commercial ANSYS package to simulate the indentation. Although the load-displacement plots generated by the FE model consistently displayed stiffer identities than the experimentally obtained results, there was reasonably close agreement between the two sets of results. Stress distribution profiles of the three FE models at failure loads were analysed and correlated so as to draw an implication on the prediction of a catastrophic failure through an analysis of FE-generated stress distribution profiles. It was observed that although increased curvatures of the vitrified enamel layer do enhance the overall load-bearing capacity of the single-stage ceramic tile grout seal and bring about a lower nominal stress, there is a higher build up in stress concentration at the apex that would inevitably reduce the load-bearing capacity of the enamel glaze. Consequently, the optimum geometry of the vitrified enamel layer was determined to be flat

    Associations between vaccination and antimicrobial consumption in Danish pig herds, 2013

    Antimicrobial agents are being used in modern swine production worldwide, generating concern in regards to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Identifying efficient alternatives has therefore become a subject of interest. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of routinely used vaccination as an alternative to antimicrobial consumption in weaner pig herds. The hypothesis was that herds with increased use of vaccination would have a lower antimicrobial consumption. Data were obtained from the Danish VetStat database in which prescriptions of medication for livestock are recorded as well as the Danish Central Husbandry Register. All Danish one-site pig herds, active in year 2013, with \u3e50 sows and \u3e200 weaners were selected for the study. Initially, data were analysed using a univariable model, and secondly a multivariable linear regression model was applied. The analyses included use of three different vaccines against Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2), Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M_HYO) and Lawsonia intracellularis (LAW), respectively, as well as annual production measured as number of weaners produced in a year. The outcome was the average antimicrobial consumption measured in animal daily does (ADD) per weaner pig. Out of the 1,513 herds selected for the study, 1,415 herds had antimicrobials prescribed for gastrointestinal disorders, and 836 for respiratory disorders. PCV2 vaccine was used in 880 herds, M_HYO vaccine in 787 and LAW vaccine was the least used, with 115 herds using it. The results suggested that antimicrobials to some extent were being used for other disease categories than those officially prescribed by the veterinarians. On average, herds using the different combinations of vaccines had higher use of antimicrobials than herds not using the vaccines – probably as a result of health problems in the herds existing prior to the initiation of vaccine use. Information about vaccination protocols, health status, biosecurity, and management practices was not available limiting the ability to assess causality

    Frequency response in surface-potential driven electro-hydrodynamics

    Using a Fourier approach we offer a general solution to calculations of slip velocity within the circuit description of the electro-hydrodynamics in a binary electrolyte confined by a plane surface with a modulated surface potential. We consider the case with a spatially constant intrinsic surface capacitance where the net flow rate is in general zero while harmonic rolls as well as time-averaged vortex-like components may exist depending on the spatial symmetry and extension of the surface potential. In general the system displays a resonance behavior at a frequency corresponding to the inverse RC time of the system. Different surface potentials share the common feature that the resonance frequency is inversely proportional to the characteristic length scale of the surface potential. For the asymptotic frequency dependence above resonance we find a 1/omega^2 power law for surface potentials with either an even or an odd symmetry. Below resonance we also find a power law omega^alpha with alpha being positive and dependent of the properties of the surface potential. Comparing a tanh potential and a sech potential we qualitatively find the same slip velocity, but for the below-resonance frequency response the two potentials display different power law asymptotics with alpha=1 and alpha~2, respectively.Comment: 4 pages including 1 figure.     A repulsive reference potential reproducing the dynamics of a liquid with attractions

    A well-known result of liquid state theory is that the structure of dense fluids is mainly determined by repulsive forces. The WCA potential, which cuts intermolecular potentials at their minima, is therefore often used as a reference. However, this reference gives quite wrong results for the viscous dynamics of the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones liquid [Berthier and Tarjus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 170601 (2009)]. We show that repulsive inverse-power law potentials provide a useful reference for this liquid by reproducing its structure, dynamics, and isochoric heat capacity

    Epidemiology and fitness effects of wood mouse herpesvirus in a natural host population

    Rodent gammaherpesviruses have become important models for understanding human herpesvirus diseases. In particular, interactions between murid herpesvirus 4 and Mus musculus (a non-natural host species) have been extensively studied under controlled laboratory conditions. However, several fundamental aspects of murine gammaherpesvirus biology are not well understood, including how these viruses are transmitted from host to host, and their impacts on host fitness under natural conditions. Here, we investigate the epidemiology of a gammaherpesvirus in free-living wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and bank voles (Myodes glareolus) in a 2-year longitudinal study. Wood mouse herpesvirus (WMHV) was the only herpesvirus detected and occurred frequently in wood mice and also less commonly in bank voles. Strikingly, WMHV infection probability was highest in reproductively active, heavy male mice. Infection risk also showed a repeatable seasonal pattern, peaking in spring and declining through the summer. We show that this seasonal decline can be at least partly attributed to reduced recapture of WMHV-infected adults. These results suggest that male reproductive behaviours could provide an important natural route of transmission for these viruses. They also suggest that gammaherpesvirus infection may have significant detrimental effects in wild hosts, questioning the view that these viruses have limited impacts in natural, co-evolved host species

    Breeding system and reproductive skew in a highly polygynous ant population

    Abstract.: Factors affecting relatedness among nest members in ant colonies with high queen number are still poorly understood. In order to identify the major determinants of nest kin structure, we conducted a detailed analysis of the breeding system of the ant Formica exsecta. We estimated the number of mature queens by mark-release-recapture in 29 nests and dissected a sub-sample of queens to assess their reproductive status. We also used microsatellites to estimate relatedness within and between all classes of nestmates (queens, their mates, worker brood, queen brood and male brood). Queen number was very high, with an arithmetic mean of 253 per nest. Most queens (90%) were reproductively active, consistent with the genetic analyses revealing that there was only a minimal reproductive skew among nestmate queens. Despite the high queen number and low reproductive skew, almost all classes of individuals were significantly related to each other. Interestingly, the number of resident queens was a poor predictor of kin structure at the nest level, consistent with the observation that new queens are produced in bursts leading to highly fluctuating queen number across years. Queen number also varied tremendously across nests, with estimates ranging from five to several hundred queens. Accordingly, the harmonic mean queen number (40.5) was six times lower than the arithmetic mean.
