Evidence for Thermally Activated Spontaneous Fluxoid Formation in Superconducting Thin-Film Rings
We have observed spontaneous fluxoid generation in thin-film rings of the
amorphous superconductor MoSi, cooled through the normal-superconducting
transition, as a function of quench rate and externally applied magnetic field,
using a variable sample temperature scanning SQUID microscope. Our results can
be explained using a model of freezout of thermally activated fluxoids,
mediated by the transport of bulk vortices across the ring walls. This
mechanism is complementary to a mechanism proposed by Kibble and Zurek, which
only relies on causality to produce a freezout of order parameter fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Crystal structure of the catalytic fragment of murine poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-2.
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) has become an important pharmacological target in the treatment of cancer due to its cellular role as a 'DNA-strand break sensor', which leads in part to resistance to some existing chemo- and radiological treatments. Inhibitors have now been developed which prevent PARP-1 from synthesizing poly(ADP-ribose) in response to DNA-breaks and potentiate the cytotoxicity of DNA damaging agents. However, with the recent discoveries of PARP-2, which has a similar DNA-damage dependent catalytic activity, and additional members containing the 'PARP catalytic' signature, the isoform selectivity and resultant pharmacological effects of existing inhibitors are brought into question. We present here the crystal structure of the catalytic fragment of murine PARP-2, at 2.8 A resolution, and compare this to the catalytic fragment of PARP-1, with an emphasis on providing a possible framework for rational drug design in order to develop future isoform-specific inhibitors

Data assimilation for the Martian atmosphere using MGS Thermal Emission Spectrometer observations
From the introduction: Given the quantity of data expected from current and forthcoming spacecraft missions to Mars, it is now possible to use data assimilation as a means of atmospheric analysis for the first time for a planet other than the Earth. Several groups have described plans to develop assimilation schemes for Mars [Banfield et al., 1995; Houben, 1999; Lewis and Read, 1995; Lewis et al., 1996, 1997; Zhang et al., 2001]. Data assimilation is a technique for the analysis of atmospheric observations which combines currently valid information with prior knowledge from previous observations and dynamical and physical constraints, via the use of a numerical model. Despite the number of new missions, observations of the atmosphere of Mars in the near future are still likely to be sparse when compared to those of the Earth, perhaps
comprising one orbiter and a few surface stations at best
at any one time. Data assimilation is useful as a means
to extract the maximum information from such observations,
both by a form of interpolation in space and time
using model constraints and by the combination of information from different observations, e.g. temperature
profiles and surface pressure measurements which may
be irregularly distributed. The procedure can produce a
dynamically consistent set of meteorological fields and
can be used directly to test and to refine an atmospheric
model against observations

Assimilation of TES data from the Mars Global Surveyor scientifc mapping phase
The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES)aboard Mars Global Surveyor has produced data which cover almost two Martian years so far (during its scientific mapping phase). Thermal profiles for the atmosphere below 40 km and total dust opacities can be retrieved from TES nadir spectra and assimilated into a Mars general circulation model (MGCM), by using the assimilation techniques described in detail by Lewis et al. (2002). This paper describes some preliminary results from assimilations of temperature data from the period Ls=141°- 270° corresponding to late northern summer until winter solstice on Mars. Work in progress is devoted to assimilate both temperature and total dust opacity data for the full period for which they are already available

Atmosphere, Interior, and Evolution of the Metal-Rich Transiting Planet HD 149026b
We investigate the atmosphere and interior of the new transiting planet HD
149026b, which appears to be very rich in heavy elements. We first compute
model atmospheres at metallicities ranging from solar to ten times solar, and
show how for cases with high metallicity or inefficient redistribution of
energy from the day side, the planet may develop a hot stratosphere due to
absorption of stellar flux by TiO and VO. The spectra predicted by these models
are very different than cooler atmosphere models without stratospheres. The
spectral effects are potentially detectable with the Spitzer Space Telescope.
In addition the models with hot stratospheres lead to a large limb brightening,
rather than darkening. We compare the atmosphere of HD 149026b to other
well-known transiting planets, including the recently discovered HD 189733b,
which we show have planet-to-star flux ratios twice that of HD 209458 and
TrES-1. The methane abundance in the atmosphere of HD 189733b is a sensitive
indicator of atmospheric temperature and metallicity and can be constrained
with Spitzer IRAC observations. We then turn to interior studies of HD 149026b
and use a grid of self-consistent model atmospheres and high-pressure equations
of state for all components to compute thermal evolution models of the planet.
We estimate that the mass of heavy elements within the planet is in the range
of 60 to 93 M_earth. Finally, we discuss trends in the radii of transiting
planets with metallicity in light of this new member of the class.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal. 18 pages, including 10

Thinking About Causation : A Causal Language with Epistemic Operators
In this paper we propose a formal framework for modeling the interaction of causal and (qualitative) epistemic reasoning. To this purpose, we extend the notion of a causal model [11, 16, 17, 26] with a representation of the epistemic state of an agent. On the side of the object language, we add operators to express knowledge and the act of observing new information. We provide a sound and complete axiomatization of the logic, and discuss the relation of this framework to causal team semantics.Peer reviewe
A very fast inference algorithm for finite-dimensional spin glasses: Belief Propagation on the dual lattice
Starting from a Cluster Variational Method, and inspired by the correctness
of the paramagnetic Ansatz (at high temperatures in general, and at any
temperature in the 2D Edwards-Anderson model) we propose a novel message
passing algorithm --- the Dual algorithm --- to estimate the marginal
probabilities of spin glasses on finite dimensional lattices. We show that in a
wide range of temperatures our algorithm compares very well with Monte Carlo
simulations, with the Double Loop algorithm and with exact calculation of the
ground state of 2D systems with bimodal and Gaussian interactions. Moreover it
is usually 100 times faster than other provably convergent methods, as the
