A Correlational Study of the AVID Program with M.S. Math Achievement

Improving student achievement in mathematics in secondary schools remains a priority for public education in our country. With continued federal and state mandates to improve overall student achievement in mathematics, as well as to close the achievement gap, many school districts have sought programs, such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), to assist in improving student performance. The mission of AVID is to improve the academic achievement of students who are often in the middle or average and who are typically minorities and are economically disadvantaged. AVID seeks to support these students by providing them with the strategies that successful students often use, including honing their understanding of writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading, and developing techniques to improve their organization and critical thinking skills, so they stand a greater chance of entrance into a four-year college or university upon graduation from high school. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the impact of the AVID program on seventh and eighth grade student achievement in mathematics as measured by the Colorado State Assessment Program (CSAP). This study, conducted in a middle class suburban middle school of a large school district, compared matched pairs of AVID elective students, AVID team students, and non-AVID students from their 2008 overall CSAP results in mathematics and in the sub-content areas of number sense and geometry with their 2009 overall CSAP results in mathematics and in the sub-content areas of number sense and geometry. The results of this study were mixed. Students who participated in the AVID elective class showed statistically significant improvement in their mathematical achievement as measured by CSAP; however, no significance was found when comparing student achievement of AVID elective students with AVID team students or non-AVID students. The AVID program, therefore, may have an overall positive impact on student achievement for those students who are able to participate in classes with AVID trained teachers

The Impact of Sound on Information Recall: An Investigation of Gender Differences

    Get PDF
The IS profession will soon be called upon to integrate multimedia into the mainstream of software design. Yet, usable guidelines to support this effort are only now beginning to emerge in the literature. This paper, supported by a laboratory study, provides initial insight into the impact of sound on information recall, especially as it relates to the gender of the user. The results of our study indicate that the advantages (or disadvantages) of sound-supported information delivery is significantly influenced by the gender of the user

Water facilities in retrospect and prospect: An illuminating tool for vehicle design

    Get PDF
Water facilities play a fundamental role in the design of air, ground, and marine vehicles by providing a qualitative, and sometimes quantitative, description of complex flow phenomena. Water tunnels, channels, and tow tanks used as flow-diagnostic tools have experienced a renaissance in recent years in response to the increased complexity of designs suitable for advanced technology vehicles. These vehicles are frequently characterized by large regions of steady and unsteady three-dimensional flow separation and ensuing vortical flows. The visualization and interpretation of the complicated fluid motions about isolated vehicle components and complete configurations in a time and cost effective manner in hydrodynamic test facilities is a key element in the development of flow control concepts, and, hence, improved vehicle designs. A historical perspective of the role of water facilities in the vehicle design process is presented. The application of water facilities to specific aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flow problems is discussed, and the strengths and limitations of these important experimental tools are emphasized

Impurity-Concentration Profile for an Exponentially Decaying Diffusion Coefficient in Irradiation Enhanced Diffusion

    Get PDF
The diffusion equation is solved for a semi-infinite region in the case of irradiation-enhanced diffusion produced by a diffusion coefficient falling off exponentially in the medium. Near the surface the concentration profile due to enhanced diffusion has a larger concentration than the profile due to thermal diffusion; conversely far from the surface the enhanced-diffusion profile has a lower concentration than that due to thermal diffusion. Thus, this type of enhanced diffusion results in a more abruptly changing profile than does thermal diffusion

Role of bevacizumab therapy in the management of glioblastoma

    Get PDF
Glioblastoma is one of the most common primary brain tumors and one of the most difficult to treat. In population-based studies only 30% of patients will survive 1 year and in the most efficacious surgery, irradiation, and chemotherapy clinical trials approximately 20% will live 2 years. Bevacizumab is a recombinant, antivascular epidermal growth factor receptor (VEGF) monoclonal antibody with 6 VEGF-binding residues that binds to VEGF, preventing VEGF from binding to its target, VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2, on endothelial cells. Through its binding to VEGF ligands bevacizumab reduces tumor angiogenesis and vasogenic brain edema; the consequences are that bevacizumab reduces the rate of glioblastoma tumor growth and its associated tumoral edema, thereby improving quality of life and survival for patients suffering from cerebral glioblastoma. In this review, we will summarize the studies that led to the use of bevacizumab in glioblastoma and the potential side-effects and complications that can be associated with its use and, finally, new opportunities for drug combinations with bevacizumab
