The Block Spin Renormalization Group Approach and Two-Dimensional Quantum Gravity
A block spin renormalization group approach is proposed for the dynamical
triangulation formulation of two-dimensional quantum gravity. The idea is to
update link flips on the block lattice in response to link flips on the
original lattice. Just as the connectivity of the original lattice is meant to
be a lattice representation of the metric, the block links are determined in
such a way that the connectivity of the block lattice represents a block
metric. As an illustration, this approach is applied to the Ising model coupled
to two-dimensional quantum gravity. The correct critical coupling is
reproduced, but the critical exponent is obscured by unusually large finite

Overlap Distribution of the Three-Dimensional Ising Model
We study the Parisi overlap probability density P_L(q) for the
three-dimensional Ising ferromagnet by means of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations.
At the critical point P_L(q) is peaked around q=0 in contrast with the double
peaked magnetic probability density. We give particular attention to the tails
of the overlap distribution at the critical point, which we control over up to
500 orders of magnitude by using the multi-overlap MC algorithm. Below the
critical temperature interface tension estimates from the overlap probability
density are given and their approach to the infinite volume limit appears to be

Monte Carlo Renormalization of the 3-D Ising model: Analyticity and Convergence
We review the assumptions on which the Monte Carlo renormalization technique
is based, in particular the analyticity of the block spin transformations. On
this basis, we select an optimized Kadanoff blocking rule in combination with
the simulation of a d=3 Ising model with reduced corrections to scaling. This
is achieved by including interactions with second and third neighbors. As a
consequence of the improved analyticity properties, this Monte Carlo
renormalization method yields a fast convergence and a high accuracy. The
results for the critical exponents are y_H=2.481(1) and y_T=1.585(3).Comment: RevTeX, 4 PostScript file
Ice XII in its second regime of metastability
We present neutron powder diffraction results which give unambiguous evidence
for the formation of the recently identified new crystalline ice phase[Lobban
et al.,Nature, 391, 268, (1998)], labeled ice XII, at completely different
conditions. Ice XII is produced here by compressing hexagonal ice I_h at T =
77, 100, 140 and 160 K up to 1.8 GPa. It can be maintained at ambient pressure
in the temperature range 1.5 < T < 135 K. High resolution diffraction is
carried out at T = 1.5 K and ambient pressure on ice XII and accurate
structural properties are obtained from Rietveld refinement. At T = 140 and 160
K additionally ice III/IX is formed. The increasing amount of ice III/IX with
increasing temperature gives an upper limit of T ~ 150 K for the successful

The PEER Collaborative: Supporting Engineering Education Research Faculty with Near-peer Mentoring Unconference Workshops
The PEER Collaborative National Network is a national peer mentoring network for early career tenure-track or mid-career tenured faculty who conduct and are primarily evaluated based on their research related to engineering education. This paper discusses the development, logistics, and outcomes of two PEER workshops built around a community of practice framework. Data from internal and external evaluations are presented to provide insights into aspects that worked well and aspects that need further development. Additionally, by reflecting on the workshops, participants crafted vignettes describing the impact the PEER workshops had on their personal and professional lives. The paper concludes with a discussion on the future of PEER (and potential spin-off groups from the PEER cohorts), and the changes that will be made in future workshops. Recommendations are provided for other organizers interested in developing successful “near peer” groups to address specific community needs
A Monte Carlo study of leading order scaling corrections of phi^4 theory on a three dimensional lattice
We present a Monte Carlo study of the one-component model on the
cubic lattice in three dimensions. Leading order scaling corrections are
studied using the finite size scaling method. We compute the corrections to
scaling exponent with high precision. We determine the value of the
coupling at which leading order corrections to scaling vanish. Using
this result we obtain estimates for critical exponents that are more precise

Recent ecological change in ancient lakes
Ancient lakes are among the best archivists of past environmental change, having experienced more than one full glacial cycle, a wide range of climatic conditions, tectonic events, and long association with human settlements. These lakes not only record long histories of environmental variation and human activity in their sediments, but also harbor very high levels of biodiversity and endemism. Yet, ancient lakes are faced with a familiar suite of anthropogenic threats, which may degrade the unusual properties that make them especially valuable to science and society. In all ancient lakes for which data exist, significant warming of surface waters has occurred, with a broad range of consequences. Eutrophication threatens both native species assemblages and regional economies reliant on clean surface water, fisheries, and tourism. Where sewage contributes nutrients and heavy metals, one can anticipate the occurrence of less understood emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and microplastics that negatively affect lake biota and water quality. Human populations continue to increase in most of the ancient lakes’ watersheds, which will exacerbate these concerns. Further, human alterations of hydrology, including those produced through climate change, have altered lake levels. Co‐occurring with these impacts have been intentional and unintentional species introductions, altering biodiversity. Given that the distinctive character of each ancient lake is strongly linked to age, there may be few options to remediate losses of species or other ecosystem damage associated with modern ecological change, heightening the imperative for understanding these systems
ScanImage: Flexible software for operating laser scanning microscopes
BACKGROUND: Laser scanning microscopy is a powerful tool for analyzing the structure and function of biological specimens. Although numerous commercial laser scanning microscopes exist, some of the more interesting and challenging applications demand custom design. A major impediment to custom design is the difficulty of building custom data acquisition hardware and writing the complex software required to run the laser scanning microscope. RESULTS: We describe a simple, software-based approach to operating a laser scanning microscope without the need for custom data acquisition hardware. Data acquisition and control of laser scanning are achieved through standard data acquisition boards. The entire burden of signal integration and image processing is placed on the CPU of the computer. We quantitate the effectiveness of our data acquisition and signal conditioning algorithm under a variety of conditions. We implement our approach in an open source software package (ScanImage) and describe its functionality.
