PURPOSE: The aim of the paper is to present preliminary research concerning the barriers and benefits of implementing the Lean concept in enterprises from the Greater Poland Voivodeship.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The methodology is composed of three major steps. First, the meaning of Lean was discussed. This is followed by a description of implementation and the barriers involved. In the following section, the benefits of applying the Lean concept are analysed.FINDINGS: The results of the research were presented and analysed, in the conclusion, it was pointed out that a large part of companies poorly implement and apply the concept of Lean, which negatively affects their competitiveness on the market.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The respondents after they got the presented have found that it is worthwhile to use new management systems to become a leader in their industry. Presenting the paper to the wider group can contribute to dissemination of the lean concept not only in large but also in small companies.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The value of the paper is mostly practical, as the lean concept is widely presented in literature, yet not fully explored in business practice.peer-reviewe

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the heart resulting from infections, drugs, toxic substances or associated with autoimmune conditions. Viral etiology is the most common cause of myocarditis. Currently Parvovirus B19, Human Herpes Virus 6 and Cytomegalovirus are most often detected in inflamed myocardium. Diagnosis is still challenging as symptoms are nonspecific. Moreover, noninvasive imaging modalities, such as echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance are often misleading. Endomyocardial biopsy remains the gold standard in making diagnosis. It allows for histologic, immunohistochemical and molecular biological assessment. Identification of etiology is important because specific antiviral treatment, which improves prognosis, is available when enteroviral or adenoviral etiology of myocarditis is confirmed by detecting viral genome with the use of PCR.Zapalenie mięśnia sercowego (ZMS) powstaje w wyniku zakażeń, działania leków, toksycznych substancji lub jest związane z chorobami autoimmunologicznymi. Złotym standardem w rozpoznaniu ZMS pozostaje biopsja endomiokardialna. Pozwala ona na ocenę histologiczną, immunohistochemiczną i molekularną. Identyfikacja czynnika etiologicznego jest istotna, ponieważ umożliwia włączenie specyficznego leczenia przeciwwirusowego, które poprawia rokowanie

Spatial distribution of white matter degenerative lesions and cognitive dysfunction in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients

Aim. The aim of this study was to assess degenerative lesion localisation in the course of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and to identify the association between localisation and the frequency of T1-hypointense lesions (black holes) with cognitive dysfunction. We also searched for neuroradiological predictors of cognitive dysfunction in patients. The clinical rationale for the study was previous research, and our own findings suggest that lesion localisation plays an important role in cognitive performance and neurological disability of MS patients. Material and methods. Forty-two patients were included in the study. All subjects underwent neuropsychological examination using Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices, a naming task from the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests, and attention to detail tests. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was acquired on 1.5 Tesla scanner and black holes were manually segmented on T1-weighted volumetric images using the FMRIB Software Library. Linear regression was applied to establish a relationship between black hole volume per lobe and cognitive parameters. Bonferroni correction of voxelwise analysis was used to correct for multiple comparisons. Results. The following associations between black hole volume and cognition were identified: frontal lobes black hole volume was associated with phonemic verbal fluency (t = –4.013, p < 0.001), parietal black hole volume was associated with attention (t = –3.776, p < 0.001), and parietal and temporal black hole volumes were associated with nonverbal intelligence (p < 0.001). The volume of parietal black holes was the best predictor of cognitive dysfunction. Conclusions. Our approach, including measurement of focal axonal loss based on T1-volumetric MRI sequence and brief neuropsychological assessment, might improve personalised diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in clinical practice

Prevalence of overweight and obesity, and dieting attitudes among Caucasian and African American college students in Eastern North carolina: A cross-sectional survey

A cross-sectional survey was used to investigate the rates of overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 25), and eating attitudes among college students. Data were collected at a large southeastern university. Adolescents (ages 18-25) self-reported weight and height (to calculate BMI), and, in addition to demographic information, completed the eating attitudes (EAT 26) scale to assess dieting tendencies. Significance of the mean BMI differences between gender and ethnic background were assessed by one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA). Chi-square was used to determine whether the rate of those with BMI≥25 between gender and ethnic background was statistically significant. While 52.7% of the students' BMI were within the normal weight category, 15.2% were underweight, 21.3% were overweight, and 10.8% were obese. The rate of BMI≥25 differed by gender and ethnicity, with males and African Americans having higher rates. About 12 % of the participants reported disturbed eating behavior, which is lower than previously reported. Even so, results support the generally held belief that disturbed eating attitudes and unhealthy dieting are common among college students, especially among females. At the same time, disturbed eating attitudes are not just the domain of young female students; about 10% of college males reported disturbed eating attitudes. Findings of this study call for obesity prevention/intervention and lifestyle modification outreach programs among college students. Weight status and unhealthy eating behaviors of college students should be a concern to health care professionals. While obese young adults will likely remain obese throughout their adult life, excessive dieting among students, which is linked to eating disorders and other health hazards, does not provide healthy and adequate alternatives for maintaining a normal BMI. Implications for obesity prevention programs are discussed
