Being capable, yet helpless, in an egalitarian society: Are more educated individuals always less likely to support political violence?

While some theoretical models of radicalization suggest that less educated individuals are drawn towards political violence due to grievances, others highlight circumstances in which more educated individuals may be more inclined to participate in violent collective actions. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis have not provided any firm conclusions regarding the role of education in determining radicalized attitudes and behaviors. The goal of this study was to provide a systematic overview of bivariate and interactive relationships between the level of education and support for political violence across countries. Therefore, multilevel regression analyses were applied to the World Value Survey  data (seventh wave). Next to testing the linear relationship, the focus of this study was to test the relationship between education and support for political violence in circumstances which, according to theories of radicalization revolving around grievance, should undermine the protective role of education. Therefore, the cross-level interaction between education, attribution of success (to hard work or luck and connections) and egalitarianism in a society (measured on the country-level) was also tested. Results of the conducted analyses suggest that education has a weak protective role against support for political violence, although this role depends on the context. More precisely, education loses its protective role only among individuals who attribute success dominantly to luck and connections instead of hard work (i.e., perceive hard work as not an ineffective way of achieving success) and live in egalitarian societies. England and english dramatic heroes in the expressionist mirror of W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood

The essay deals with The Dog Beneath the Skin, the play that belongs to the group of expressionist dramas composed by W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood in the 1930s. Inspired by the theatrical achievements of both German expressionist drama and Berthold Brecht’s epic theatre, the two authors embarked on an experiment unprecedented on the modern British stage. Although they did not initiate revolutionary changes, they were remembered for their perseverance in the promotion of the aesthetic principles of theatrical expressionism. The analysis identifies the play as a truly expressionist one, shaped primarily as a critique of totalitarian society or the state that establishes itself as the embodiment of repression and national chauvinism turning against other states as well as against their own subjects failing to comply with the ruling ideology. The pronounced leftism of the authors undoubtedly influenced the choice of their own homeland as the ground the repressive apparatus operates on. Their political orientation serving as a powerful source of poetry is counterbalanced with parody and grotesque capable of unleashing the subversive potential of the drama. Shaped as a modernist pseudo-myth, the plot of this drama contains seemingly never-ending line of antinomies such as justice–injustice, sublime–funny, mundane–timeless, realism–fantasy, tragedy–parody or grotesque. The clashes of these opposing qualities reveal the gloomy panorama of totalitarian England, fragmented to the level of an ironic-grotesque kaleidoscope, but at the same time universalized as an almost doctrinal condemnation of any kind of institutional violence or as a critical exposure of its mechanisms. The rigid division of the characters into the good and evil ones and the lack of the profound psychological analysis are strictly functional in the sense of radicalizing the dramatic conflict as required by the aesthetic principles of theatrical expressionism. The analysis disputes some issues of the play brought out by some contemporary literary critics and hints at the possibilities of its further creative interpretations

The Role of Aggression in the Relationship Between the General Dark Personality Traits, Honesty/Humility and Support for Political Violence

Razni suvremeni psihološki modeli radikalizacije uz kontekstualne čimbenike upućuju i na ulogu relativno stabilnih dispozicija u prihvaćanju ekstremističkih ideologija i s njima povezanoga političkog nasilja. No empirijska objašnjenja postojanja tog odnosa i dalje su rijetka. Various contemporary psychological models of radicalisation, next to contextual factors, also highlighted the role of relatively stable dispositions in accepting extremist ideologies and political violence related to these ideologies. Newer studies, focused on the role of dark personality traits in the context of radicalisation, relatively consistently found that persons high on dark personality traits are more likely to support political violence and extreme politics. However, empirical explanations of this relationship are still rare. Therefore, this study, in line with previous research, tested if aggression, a common characteristic of dark personality traits, lies behind the relationship between dark personality traits and the honesty/humility dimension from the HEXACO model with support for political violence, while taking into account potential sources of bias that were present in earlier studies. The results obtained on a sample of 191 faculty students robustly exhibited that the relationship between the studied personality traits and support for political violence disappears after statistically controlling for aggression. Therefore, the results of this study offer a valuable contribution to the understanding of extremist attitudes and provide empirical argumentation in favour of the hypotheses on the role of dispositions in the political lives of citizens

    Get PDF
This paper gives the results of the electricity generated by the fixed, one-axis and dual-axis tracking photovoltaic solar plant of 1 MW with flat panels made of monocrystalline silicon which is to be built in the area of Sokobanja (spa in Serbia). Further on follows a description of the functioning of the fixed and one-axis and dual-axis tracking solar plants. For the calculation of the electricity generated by these plants PVGIS program was used. Calculations have shown that fixed photovoltaic solar plant power of 1 MW, solar modules of mono-crystalline silicon yield 1130000 kWh power output, one-axis tracking solar plant yields 1420000 kWh, and dual-axis tracking solar plant yields 1450000 kWh of electricity. Electricity generated by the fixed photovoltaic solar plant could satisfy 86% of the annual needs for the electricity of the 'Zdravljak' hotel and the special 'Novi stacionar' hospital in Sokobanja

Main goals of this research were to test the relationship between personal values and the Dark triad and to determine latent dimensions of personal values measured by PVQ-21 in order to test previously mentioned relationship on a more general level. The research was conducted online and the sample consisted of 510 participants, 291 of which were females. Participants were recruited via mailing lists and social networks, where link leading to the questionnaire was posted. Portrait values questionnaire and Short Dark Triad questionnaire were used as measurement of explored 5 constructs. Results have confirmed values of self-enhancement as predictors of the Dark triad traits, as well as exhibited some other outcomes that differed from previous research and could probably be attributed to cultural differences. Regression analyses of personal values as predictors of the Dark triad traits have exhibited higher value of power and lower value of benevolence as predictors of higher Machiavellianism, higher values of stimulation and achievement and lower value of tradition as predictors of higher narcissism and higher values stimulation and power and lower values of conformism and benevolence as predictors of higher psychopathy. Factor analysis conducted on the results of the PVQ questionnire resulted in interpretable factors only after ipsatization was conducted and, aside from minor discrepancies, reflected bipolar dimensions of self-enhancement – self-transcendence and openness to change – conservation. After including these new value dimensions into analyses, results have confirmed previous findings and have shown a relationship between tendency to self-enhancement and higher Dark triad traits (except for psychopathy). Results closer to the pole of openness to change were related to higher narcissism and psychopathy, but lower Machiavellianism
