Preferred levels for background ducking to produce esthetically pleasing audio for TV with clear speech

    Get PDF
In audio production, background ducking facilitates speech intelligibility while allowing the background to fulfill its purpose, e.g., to create ambience, set the mood, or convey semantic cues. Technical details for recommended ducking practices are not currently documented in the literature. Hence, we first analyzed common practices found in TV documentaries. Second, a listening test investigated the preferences of 22 normal-hearing participants on the Loud- ness Difference (LD) between commentary and background during ducking. Highly personal preferences were observed, highlighting the importance of object-based personalization. Sta- tistically significant difference was found between non-expert and expert listeners. On average, non-experts preferred LDs that were 4 LU higher than the ones preferred by experts. A sta- tistically significant difference was also found between Commentary over Music (CoM) and Commentary over Ambience (CoA). Based on the test results, we recommend at least 10 LU difference for CoM and at least 15 LU for CoA. Moreover, a computational method based on the Binaural Distortion-Weighted Glimpse Proportion (BiDWGP) was found to match the median preferred LD for each item with good accuracy (mean absolute error = 1.97 LU ± 2.50)

Populism, COVID-19, and the Rule of Law: the cases of Hungary and Poland

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic that started in Europe in early 2020 has not only had major effects on public health and European economies, but equally affected democratic politics in a significant manner. An important question is whether the COVID-19 crisis has created opportunities for (right-wing) populist parties to strengthen their position, and more generally, whether liberal democratic systems have suffered from the pandemic in terms of the guarantee of rights and in terms of an increase in monitoring and controlling of society and individual behavior. The paper will first discuss and contextualize the emergence of populism, focusing on its most prominent, right-wing version. Subsequently, the cases of Hungary and Poland will be discussed

Correlated ab-initio calculations for ground-state properties of II-VI semiconductors

Correlated ab-initio ground-state calculations, using relativistic energy-consistent pseudopotentials, are performed for six II-VI semiconductors. Valence (ns,npns,np) correlations are evaluated using the coupled cluster approach with single and double excitations. An incremental scheme is applied based on correlation contributions of localized bond orbitals and of pairs and triples of such bonds. In view of the high polarity of the bonds in II-VI compounds, we examine both, ionic and covalent embedding schemes for the calculation of individual bond increments. Also, a partitioning of the correlation energy according to local ionic increments is tested. Core-valence (nsp,(n−1)dnsp,(n-1)d) correlation effects are taken into account via a core-polarization potential. Combining the results at the correlated level with corresponding Hartree-Fock data we recover about 94% of the experimental cohesive energies; lattice constants are accurate to \sim 1%; bulk moduli are on average 10% too large compared with experiment.Comment: 10 pages, twocolumn, RevTex, 3 figures, accepted Phys.

Databases are like Box Stores: Teaching Information Literacy with Analogy

Teaching information literacy (IL) often requires instructors to explain and explore abstract concepts. This feat is never easy, as novice students often need a bridge between concrete and abstract thinking. Current research on the topic suggests one effective way to teach new, abstract concepts to students of any age is by using an analogy. However, it’s difficult to come up with effective analogies on the fly. In fact, Rick Wormeli has stated in Metaphors & Analogies: Power Tools for Teaching Any Subject that “what may need to change in many of our classrooms is the purposeful pursuit of metaphors and analogies in our teaching instead of the momentary inspirations that may or may not be helpful to students\u27 learning (4, our emphasis).” In this session, we will begin by sharing some of our favorite analogies with you and explain how they have affected student learning at the EKS Library. We found analogies such as databases : boxstores (walmart & Target), Boolean searching : grocery shopping, and intellectual property : personal property. Each of the above analogies we use for library instruction came from different instruction librarians in our department and we each incorporate all of the analogies in our instruction. Next, participants will split into groups and identify difficult IL concepts to teach students. Some of those concepts will include: subject tagging of articles, scholarship as a conversation, and research as inquiry (the concept that its not just one search but revision, much like baking without a recipe). Then the groups will brainstorm effective analogies to better reach students. The groups will come back together and discuss effective analogies they came up with during the workshop time for difficult IL concepts. Difficult concepts that participants did not find analogies for will be discussed among the whole group for further ideas. The attendees will have a list of IL concepts and analogies to take back and try at their institutions. Get PDF
Ethel K. Smith Library’s Reference and Instruction Librarians, Kory Paulus and Isaac Meadows began a venture to improve the library instruction assessment tools in Fall of 2017 under the guidance of their Library Director and Director of Institutional Effectiveness and SACS Liaison. Using the book entitled “Classroom Assessment Techniques for Librarians” published by ACRL as a proven example set of learning outcomes, the librarians customized these outcomes to meet the institutional needs. An essential motive for this initiative was to obtain quantitative data to pair with learning outcomes to ensure bibliographics instruction’s alignment with both SACSCOC and Wingate University’s core curriculum goals. The Reference and Instruction Librarians at Wingate University will walk you through their process of creating, editing and adjusting learning outcomes, lesson plans and subsequent assessments to fit their institutions goals and mission. In addition, during the workshop each attendee will complete the process and have at least 2 learning outcomes, a lesson plan and assessments applicable to their individual institution to bring back and implement at their libraries. Come build skills to revamp learning outcomes, lesson plans and assessments to fit your library and institutional needs
