    Neural Networks Tool Condition Monitoring in Single-point Dressing Operations

    Abstract Cognitive modeling of tool wear progress is employed to obtain a dependable trend of tool wear curves for optimal utilization of tool life and productivity improvement, while preserving the surface integrity of the ground parts. This paper describes a method to characterize the dresser wear condition utilizing vibration signals by applying a cognitive paradigm, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Dressing tests with a single-point dresser were performed in a surface grinding machine and tool wear measurements taken along the experiments. The results show that ANN processing offers an effective method for the monitoring of grinding wheel wear based on vibration signal analysis

    Adhesion behavior of conventional and high‐translucent zirconia: Effect of surface conditioning methods and aging using an experimental methodology

    Objective: Evaluate the adhesive behavior of conventional and high-translucent zirconia after surface conditioning and hydrothermal aging. Materials and methods: Conventional (ZrC) and high-translucent zirconia (ZrT) specimens were divided into six groups: without surface treatment (ZrC and ZrT), air-borne particle abrasion with 50-μm Al2 O3 sized particles (ZrC-AO and ZrT-AO), and tribochemical treatment with 30-μm silica modified Al2 O3 sized particles (ZrC-T and ZrT-T). Zirconia specimens were treated using an MDP-containing universal adhesive and bonded to two resins blocks with an adhesive luting cement. Microbar specimens with cross-sectioned areas of 1 mm2 were achieved. Half of the microbars were subjected to hydrothermal aging. Bond strength was evaluated by microtensile bond strength test and statistically evaluated by the Weibull analysis. Results: Roughness of the ZrC-AO and ZrT-AO groups were statistically higher. Bond strength analysis revealed higher bond strength for ZrC-AO and ZrC-T groups compared to ZrT-AO and ZrT-T, respectively. Mixed failure was the most frequent for the mechanically treated groups, while no cohesive failures were obtained. Conclusion: Lower values of bond strength were obtained for the mechanically treated high-translucent zirconia groups when compared to their conventional zirconia counterparts. Mechanical surface treatment significantly improved the bond strength to conventional and high-translucent zirconia. Clinical significance: Mechanical surface treatment (air-borne particle abrasion or tribochemical treatment) associated with the use of universal adhesives containing MDP could provide a durable bonding to conventional and high-translucent zirconia.     Análise da estabilidade de pilares de zircónia 3Y-TZP após carga cíclica e termociclagem

    Objectives: Although implant abutments made of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia poly crystal (3Y-TZP) show great predictability, some issues related to its aging require further study. The objective of this in vitro study is to assess the stability of 3Y-TZP zirconia implant abutments with two different implant connections when subjected to aging simulation through thermocycling and mechanical loading (TCML).Methods: Ten 3Y-TZP zirconia abutments were selected and equally divided into two groups (n = 5): CEZr, abutments for externally hexed implants; and CIZr, abutments for implants with an internal conical connection. The samples were subjected to thermocycling (5000 cycles; 5-55 C) and mechanical loading (1.2 x 106 cycles; 88.8 N; 4 Hz). Before and after the aging procedures, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was conducted to observe tetragonal monoclinic (t-m) phase transformation, and topographic surface analysis was performed by 3D profilometry, and data were analyzed using Mann-Witney test (p 0.05), before and after TCML, and between implants connections (test U= 57.0, p = 0.053 > 0.05) were not detected.Conclusions: After a 5-year simulation of its clinical use, the analyzed 3Y-TZP zirconia abutments did not show signs of aging. The connection's geometry does not interfere in aging.Objetivos Os pilares de zircónia tetragonal policristalina (Y-TZP) apresentam grande previsibilidade na sua utilização clínica. No entanto, existem ainda alguns aspetos relacionados com o envelhecimento que necessitam de ser estudados. O presente trabalho pretendeu avaliar a estabilidade de pilares de zircónia 3Y-TZP de 2 conexões implantares diferentes, quando submetidos a simulação de envelhecimento (TCML). Métodos Foram selecionados 10 pilares em zircónia 3Y-TZP, que foram divididos em 2 grupos (n = 5): CEZr, pilares para implantes de conexão de hexágono externo; e CIZr, pilares para implantes de conexão interna cónica-lobular. As amostras foram submetidas a termociclagem (5000 ciclos; 5-55 °C) e carga cíclica (1,2 × 106 ciclos; 88,8 N; 4 Hz). Antes e após TCML, os pilares foram sujeitos a análise por difração de raios X para determinação de alteração de fase cristalográfica de tetragonal para monoclínica (t-m) e a interferometria ótica sobre a superfície de assentamento das 2 conexões para a medição da sua topografia por perfilometria 3D. Análise estatística: Mann-Whitney test (p < 0,05). Resultados Após TCML não foi detetada fase monoclínica em nenhum dos pilares. A análise comparativa da rugosidade (com utilização do parâmetro Sa) sobre as plataformas protéticas dos pilares revelou ligeiro aumento da Sa em ambas as conexões após TCML. Não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos valores de Sa (test U = 57,0, p = 0,161 > 0,05), antes e após TCML, e entre conexões dos implantes (test U = 57,0, p = 0,053 > 0,05). Conclusões Após uma simulação de 5 anos de utilização clínica, os pilares de zircónia 3Y-TZP analisados não apresentaram sinais de envelhecimento.     A feature selection approach for identification of signature genes from SAGE data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>One goal of gene expression profiling is to identify signature genes that robustly distinguish different types or grades of tumors. Several tumor classifiers based on expression profiling have been proposed using microarray technique. Due to important differences in the probabilistic models of microarray and SAGE technologies, it is important to develop suitable techniques to select specific genes from SAGE measurements.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A new framework to select specific genes that distinguish different biological states based on the analysis of SAGE data is proposed. The new framework applies the bolstered error for the identification of strong genes that separate the biological states in a feature space defined by the gene expression of a training set. Credibility intervals defined from a probabilistic model of SAGE measurements are used to identify the genes that distinguish the different states with more reliability among all gene groups selected by the strong genes method. A score taking into account the credibility and the bolstered error values in order to rank the groups of considered genes is proposed. Results obtained using SAGE data from gliomas are presented, thus corroborating the introduced methodology.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The model representing counting data, such as SAGE, provides additional statistical information that allows a more robust analysis. The additional statistical information provided by the probabilistic model is incorporated in the methodology described in the paper. The introduced method is suitable to identify signature genes that lead to a good separation of the biological states using SAGE and may be adapted for other counting methods such as Massive Parallel Signature Sequencing (MPSS) or the recent Sequencing-By-Synthesis (SBS) technique. Some of such genes identified by the proposed method may be useful to generate classifiers.</p

    Finding bichromatic-bidirectional waves with ADVS

    The aim of this study is to investigate Bichromatic-Bidirectional waves to characterize the subtractive wave-wave nonlinear interactions, using adaptive techniques rather than traditional spectral techniques. A physical model test in a 3D-wave basin was conducted and measurements were made with two arrays of ultrasonic sensors of free surface and one array of ADVs. The Hilbert-Huang transform, aided by the Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition, was applied to the orbital velocity data and the main characteristics of the infragravity wave (velocity amplitude, period and direction) were extracted with a good precision. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).     Microfossils in micrites from Serra da Bodoquena (MS), Brazil: taxonomy and paleoenvironmental implications

    Microfossils present in Quaternary micrites from Serra da Bodoquena, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, are here described for the first time. The studied taxa are: a) ostracods: Candona sp., Candonopsis sp., Cyclocypris sp., Cypria sp., Cypridopsis sp., Notodromas sp., Ilyocypris sp., Cyprideis sp., Wolburgiopsis cf. chinamuertensis (Musacchio 1970), Darwinula sp. and 5 morphotypes; b) microgastropod Acrobis sp., and c) Characeae remains and gyrogonites Chara sp.. The presence of these microfossils suggests clear-water shallow lacustrine paleoenvironments and the presence of aquatic vegetation. Similarities between microfossils and the living taxa suggest possible Holocene ages for these deposits, which is in accordance with previous C14 dates

    Obtenção de dados meteorológicos para sistemas de alerta fitossanitário: o caso da duração do período de molhamento foliar

    Disease-warning systems are decision support tools designed to help growers determine when to apply control measures to suppress crop diseases. Weather data are nearly ubiquitous inputs to warning systems. This contribution reviews ways in which weather data are gathered for use as inputs to disease-warning systems, and the associated logistical challenges. Grower-operated weather monitoring is contrasted with obtaining data from networks of weather stations, and the advantages and disadvantages of measuring vs. estimating weather data are discussed. Special emphasis is given to leaf wetness duration (LWD), not only because LWD data are inputs to many disease-warning systems but also because accurate data are uniquely challenging to obtain. It is concluded that there is no single best method to acquire weather data for use in disease-warning systems; instead, local, regional, and national circumstances are likely to influence which strategy is most successful.Os sistemas de alerta fitossanitário são ferramentas de suporte à decisão desenvolvidos para ajudar os agricultures a determinar o melhor momento da aplicação das medidas de controle para combater as doenças de plantas. As variáveis meteorológicas são dados de entrada quase que obrigatórios desses sistemas. Este trabalho apresenta uma revisão sobre os meios pelos quais as variáveis meteorológicas são coletadas para serem usadas como dados de entrada em sistemas de alerta fitossanitário e sobre os desafios associados à logística de obtenção desses dados. Essa revisão compara o monitoramento meteorológico ao nível do produtor, nas propriedades agrícolas, com aquele feito ao nível de redes de estações meteorológicas, assim como discute as vantagens e desvantagens entre medir e estimar tais variáveis meteorológicas. Especial ênfase é dada à duração do período de molhamento foliar (DPM), não somente pela sua importância como dado de entrada em diversos sistemas de alerta fitossanitário, mas também pelo desafio de se obter dados acurados dessa variável. Pode-se concluir, após ampla discussão do assunto, que não há um método único e melhor para se obter os dados meteorológicos para uso em sistemas de alerta fitossanitário; por outro lado, as circunstâncias a nível local, regional e nacional provavelmente influenciam a estratégia de maior sucesso

    Diagnóstico de sobrepeso em adolescentes: estudo do desempenho de diferentes critérios para o Índice de Massa Corporal

    OBJECTIVE: In an attempt to simplify the screening process for detecting obesity in adolescence, the performance of different cutoff values for body mass index (BMI) was assessed in a population-based cohort in Southern Brazil. METHODS: A total of 493 adolescents aged 15-16 years who lived in the city of Pelotas, Brazil, were studied. Obesity was defined according to the WHO criteria taking into account age and sex (a BMI equal to or greater than the 85th percentile of the NHANES I reference, plus subscapular and triceps skinfold equal to or greater than the 90th percentile of the same reference). Different BMI cutoff values were used to assess their specificity and sensitivity. RESULTS: For boys, BMI >; or = 25 kg/m² showed the best performance for detecting obesity, with a sensitivity of 90% and only 5% of false positives. The Brazilian proposed criteria that was used had 100% sensitivity but up to 23% of false positives. Higher cutoff values were also tested, but there was a slight increase in specificity, accompanied by a marked reduction in sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The BMI cutoff of 25 kg/m² presented the best performance for screening obesity in the studied sample, and it is recommended for adolescents aged 15 and more in populations with similar characteristics. It provides a single cutoff value to be used in primary health services, eliminating the need for age and sex-specific values and skinfold measurements, and it is also consistent with the cutoff value proposed to identifying overweight adults.OBJETIVO: Pela simplificação da triagem para obesidade na adolescência, avaliou-se o desempenho de diferentes pontos de corte para o Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) em uma coorte populacional nascida em 1982, em Pelotas, no sul do Brasil. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 493 adolescentes, com idades de 15 a 16 anos, residentes na zona urbana de Pelotas, RS. A obesidade foi definida pelo percentil 85 de IMC mais o percentil 90 das dobras cutâneas tricipital e subescapular, conforme a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). Diversos pontos de corte para sobrepeso tiveram sua sensibilidade e especificidade avaliadas. RESULTADOS: Nos meninos, o IMC >; ou = 25 kg/m² apresentou sensibilidade superior a 90% e 5% de falso-positivos. O critério proposto para adolescentes brasileiros apresentou sensibilidade de 100%, mas os falso-positivos chegaram a 23%. Nas meninas, os pontos de corte coincidiram, apresentando sensibilidade superior a 90%, com até 13% de falso-positivos. Pontos de corte mais altos foram testados, porém pouco melhoraram a especificidade, que foi acompanhada de redução na sensibilidade. CONCLUSÕES: O IMC >; ou = 25 kg/m² mostrou o melhor desempenho na detecção de obesidade, parecendo adequado para triagem de adolescentes de ambos os sexos com 15 anos ou mais. Tem a vantagem de ser único, de fácil determinação e compatível com o ponto de corte recomendado pela OMS para adultos. Dispensa o uso de valores de IMC específicos para idade, sexo e medida de dobras cutâneas, sendo, portanto, recomendável para uso em serviços de saúde
