Chandra X-ray Observatory Arcsecond Imaging of the Young, Oxygen-rich Supernova Remnant 1E0102.2-7219
We present observations of the young, Oxygen-rich supernova remnant
1E0102.2-7219 taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory during Chandra's Orbital
Activation and Checkout phase. The boundary of the blast wave shock is clearly
seen for the first time, allowing the diameter of the remnant and the mean
blast wave velocity to be determined accurately. The prominent X-ray bright
ring of material may be the result of the reverse shock encountering ejecta;
the radial variation of O VII vs. O VIII emission indicates an ionizing shock
propagating inwards, possibly through a strong density gradient in the ejecta.
We compare the X-ray emission to Australia Telescope Compact Array 6 cm radio
observations (Amy and Ball) and to archival Hubble Space Telescope [O III]
observations. The ring of radio emission is predominantly inward of the outer
blast wave, consistent with an interpretation as synchrotron radiation
originating behind the blast wave, but outward of the bright X-ray ring of
emission. Many (but not all) of the prominent optical filaments are seen to
correspond to X-ray bright regions. We obtain an upper limit of ~9e33 erg/s (3

Rigid motion revisited: rigid quasilocal frames
We introduce the notion of a rigid quasilocal frame (RQF) as a geometrically
natural way to define a "system" in general relativity. An RQF is defined as a
two-parameter family of timelike worldlines comprising the worldtube boundary
of the history of a finite spatial volume, with the rigidity conditions that
the congruence of worldlines is expansion-free (constant size) and shear-free
(constant shape). This definition of a system is anticipated to yield simple,
exact geometrical insights into the problem of motion in general relativity. It
begins by answering the questions what is in motion (a rigid two-dimensional
system boundary), and what motions of this rigid boundary are possible. Nearly
a century ago Herglotz and Noether showed that a three-parameter family of
timelike worldlines in Minkowski space satisfying Born's 1909 rigidity
conditions has only three degrees of freedom instead of the six we are familiar
with from Newtonian mechanics. We argue that in fact we can implement Born's
notion of rigid motion in both flat spacetime (this paper) and arbitrary curved
spacetimes containing sources (subsequent papers) - with precisely the expected
three translational and three rotational degrees of freedom - provided the
system is defined quasilocally as the two-dimensional set of points comprising
the boundary of a finite spatial volume, rather than the three-dimensional set

La(, ) cross sections constrained with statistical decay properties of La nuclei
The nuclear level densities and -ray strength functions of
La were measured using the La(He, ),
La(He, He) and La(d, p) reactions. The
particle- coincidences were recorded with the silicon particle
telescope (SiRi) and NaI(Tl) (CACTUS) arrays. In the context of these
experimental results, the low-energy enhancement in the A140 region is
discussed. The La( cross sections were calculated
at - and -process temperatures using the experimentally measured nuclear
level densities and -ray strength functions. Good agreement is found
between La( calculated cross sections and previous
measurements
Aql X-1 in Outburst and Quiescence
We present photometry and spectroscopy of the soft x-ray transient Aql X-1.
Optical photometry during an active state shows a strong (0.6 mag peak-to-peak)
modulation at a period of 19 hours. Infrared (K'-band) photometry during a
quiescent state limits any ellipsoidal variations to <0.07 mag (peak-to-peak),
which implies an inclination i<31 (90% limit). Spectroscopy in a quiescent
state shows at most very small radial velocity variations, which implies a very
low inclination of i<12 (90% limit). The low inclination is rather unexpected
given the large photometric modulation seen in the active state. The upper
limit to the equivalent width of the anomalous Li 6707A line is <0.3A, which is
similar to the measured strength of this line in several other x-ray

Chronic administration of R-flurbiprofen attenuates learning impairments in transgenic amyloid precursor protein mice
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others have shown that certain NSAIDs reduce secretion of Aβ42 in cell culture and animal models, and that the effect of NSAIDs on Aβ42 is independent of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase by these compounds. Since Aβ42 is hypothesized to be the initiating pathologic molecule in AD, the ability of these compounds to lower Aβ42 selectively may be associated with their protective effect. We have previously identified <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) as a selective Aβ42 lowering agent with greatly reduced cyclooxygenase activity that shows promise for testing this hypothesis. In this study we report the effect of chronic <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen treatment on cognition and Aβ loads in Tg2576 APP mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A four-month preventative treatment regimen with <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen (10 mg/kg/day) was administered to young Tg2576 mice prior to robust plaque or Aβ pathology. This treatment regimen improved spatial learning as assessed by the Morris water maze, indicated by an increased spatial bias during the third probe trial and an increased utilization of a place strategy to solve the water maze. These results are consistent with an improvement in hippocampal- and medial temporal lobe-dependent memory function. A modest, though not statistically significant, reduction in formic acid-soluble levels of Aβ was also observed. To determine if R-flurbiprofen could reverse cognitive deficits in Tg2576 mice where plaque pathology was already robust, a two-week therapeutic treatment was given to older Tg2576 mice with the same dose of <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen. This approach resulted in a significant decrease in Aβ plaque burden but no significant improvement in spatial learning.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have found that chronic administration of <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen is able to attenuate spatial learning deficits if given prior to plaque deposition in Tg2576 mice. Given its ability to selectively target Aβ42 production and improve cognitive impairments in transgenic APP mice, as well as promising data from a phase 2 human clinical trial, future studies are needed to investigate the utility of <it>R</it>-flurbiprofen as an AD therapeutic and its possible mechanisms of action.</p
The impact of health behaviours on incident cardiovascular disease in Europeans and South Asians--a prospective analysis in the UK SABRE study.
BACKGROUND: There is consistent evidence on the impact of health behaviours on risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in European populations. As South Asians in the UK have an excess risk of CVD and coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to Europeans, we investigated whether a similar association between combined health behaviours and risk of CVD and CHD among this high-risk group exists, and estimated the population impact. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In a prospective cohort of 1090 Europeans and 1006 South Asians (40-69 y) without prevalent CVD at baseline (1988-1990), followed up for 21 years to 2011, there were 601 incident CVD events [Europeans n = 255; South Asians n = 346] of which 520 were CHD events [n = 207 and 313 respectively]. Participants scored between 0 to 4 points for a composite score including four baseline healthy behaviours (non-smoker, moderate alcohol intake, physically active, frequent fruit/vegetable intake). Adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for incident CHD in Europeans who had three, two, one, and zero compared to four health behaviours were 1.33 (0.78-2.29), 1.96 (1.15-3.33), 1.36 (0.74-2.48) and 2.45 (1.18-5.10), respectively, p-trend = 0.025. In South Asians, corresponding HRs were 2.88 (1.33-6.24), 2.28 (1.06-4.91), 3.36 (1.53-7.39) and 3.48 (1.38-8.81), p-trend = 0.022. The results were similar for incident CVD; Europeans HR 2.12 (1.14-3.94), p-trend = 0.014; South Asians HR 2.73 (1.20-6.21), p-trend = 0.018. The population attributable fraction in Europeans was 43% for CHD and 28% for CVD. In South Asians it was 63% and 51% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Lack of adherence to four combined health behaviours was associated with 2 to 3-fold increased risk of incident CVD in Europeans and South Asians. A substantial population impact in the South Asian group indicates important potential for disease prevention in this high-risk group by adherence to healthy behaviours.The SABRE study was funded by the

Prostacyclin Promotes Degenerative Pathology in a Model of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is the most common form of dementia in aged populations. A substantial amount of data demonstrates that chronic neuroinflammation can accelerate neurodegenerative pathologies. In AD, chronic neuroinflammation results in the upregulation of cyclooxygenase and increased production of prostaglandin H2, a precursor for many vasoactive prostanoids. While it is well-established that many prostaglandins can modulate the progression of neurodegenerative disorders, the role of prostacyclin (PGI2) in the brain is poorly understood. We have conducted studies to assess the effect of elevated prostacyclin biosynthesis in a mouse model of AD. Upregulated prostacyclin expression significantly worsened multiple measures associated with amyloid-β (Aβ) disease pathologies. Mice overexpressing both Aβ and PGI2 exhibited impaired learning and memory and increased anxiety-like behavior compared with non-transgenic and PGI2 control mice. PGI2 overexpression accelerated the development of Aβ accumulation in the brain and selectively increased the production of soluble Aβ42. PGI2 damaged the microvasculature through alterations in vascular length and branching; Aβ expression exacerbated these effects. Our findings demonstrate that chronic prostacyclin expression plays a novel and unexpected role that hastens the development of the AD phenotype
Detecting volcanic sulfur dioxide plumes in the Northern Hemisphere using the Brewer spectrophotometer, other networks, and satellite observations
This paper demonstrates that SO 2 columnar amounts have significantly increased following the five
largest volcanic eruptions of the past decade in the Northern Hemisphere. A strong positive signal was detected
by all the existing networks either ground based (Brewer, EARLINET, AirBase) or from satellites (OMI,
GOME-2). The study particularly examines the adequacy of the existing Brewer network to detect SO 2 plumes
of volcanic origin in comparison to other networks and satellite platforms. The comparison with OMI and 45
GOME-2 SO 2 space-borne retrievals shows statistically significant agreement between the Brewer network data
and the collocated satellite overpasses. It is shown that the Brewer instrument is capable of detecting significant columnar SO 2 increases following large volcanic eruptions, when SO 2 levels rise well above the instrumental
noise of daily observations, estimated to be of the order of 2 DU. A model exercise from the MACC project
shows that the large increases of SO 2 over Europe following the Bárðarbunga eruption in Iceland were not
caused by local sources or ship emissions but are clearly linked to the eruption. We propose that by combining
Brewer data with that from other networks and satellites, a useful tool aided by trajectory analyses and modeling
could be created which can be used to forecast high SO 2 values both at ground level and in air flight corridors
following future eruptions
Exogenous spatial precuing reliably modulates object processing but not object substitution masking
Object substitution masking (OSM) is used in behavioral and imaging studies to investigate processes associated with the formation of a conscious percept. Reportedly, OSM occurs only when visual attention is diffusely spread over a search display or focused away from the target location. Indeed, the presumed role of spatial attention is central to theoretical accounts of OSM and of visual processing more generally (Di Lollo, Enns, & Rensink, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General 129:481–507, 2000). We report a series of five experiments in which valid spatial precuing is shown to enhance the ability of participants to accurately report a target but, in most cases, without affecting OSM. In only one experiment (Experiment 5) was a significant effect of precuing observed on masking. This is in contrast to the reliable effect shown across all five experiments in which precuing improved overall performance. The results are convergent with recent findings from Argyropoulos, Gellatly, and Pilling (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance 39:646–661, 2013), which show that OSM is independent of the number of distractor items in a display. Our results demonstrate that OSM can operate independently of focal attention. Previous claims of the strong interrelationship between OSM and spatial attention are likely to have arisen from ceiling or floor artifacts that restricted measurable performance
