AVOIDING COLLAPSE: RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN VULNERABLE SMALL ISLANDS

Small islands dependent on reef fisheries, farming and tourism are vulnerable to rising human and natural pressures and may target "sustainable" development. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) have a proven ability to meet ecological goals, such as restoring fisheries and preserving ecosystem function across scales. However, there is a comparative lack of scientific baseline data and social research which may help local MPA to overcome failures in achieving mixed conservation and development goals in populated coastal areas facing intense pressure. This fieldwork-based case study researched in French and Creole languages in the sub-tropical, mid-Oceanic island of Rodrigues (Mauritius, Indian Ocean) addresses two main questions: "Are conservation and development compatible goals for MPA in small islands reliant on fisheries and tourism?", and, "Do social-ecological resilience concepts help clarify related issues of sustainability?". Results from two quantitative surveys with fishers {n=93) and tourists (n=351) on one level support a "win-win" scenario for conservation and development. Local fishers' knowledge suggested marine fish species including large predators of ecological and economic significance had been in decline for decades. Tourists' stated willingness to pay to use Marine and Coastal Protected Areas could help fund consen/ation of biodiversity and fishery enhancement, with fee options ranging from MPA up to island-level. Beyond this, downside risks emerged from qualitative interviews with key informants (n=70) and historical analysis of island-level social-ecological resilience testing the explanatory value of the conceptual Adaptive Cycle model (Holling and Gunderson 2002). A recent crisis catalysed by severe drought (1970s) led to deep social and ecological changes (collapse in farming, migration and external dependence), while subsequent policies failed to address key drivers, instead creating negative feedbacks ensuring degradation extended outward from the coast. Remote and vulnerable small islands with few resources (forests, soil, water, energy) need significant capital inputs from higher scales which are seldom taken into account in determining the balance of winners and losers in conservation and development policy at MPA or island level. A lack of interisland trust (social capital), water scarcity, climate change and migration arise as critical issues for the future. Rodrigues characterises the secondary importance of island regions within larger Island states, and underlines the cross-scale and cross-temporal nature of sustainability in resilience terms. This thesis' main contribution lies in its first demonstration of shifting baselines in an island reef fishery or MPA context. Findings contributed to the establishment of MPA In the fieldwork site of Rodrigues, and are of broad relevance for MPA policy across the tropics and beyond. More studies are needed across other ecosystems and cultures

The influence of psychological flexibility on work redesign: Mediated moderation of a work reorganization intervention

This quasi-experiment tested the extent to which an individual characteristic, psychological flexibility, moderated the effects of a control-enhancing work reorganization intervention in a call center. Results indicated that, compared to a control group, this intervention produced improvements in mental heath and absence rates, but particularly for individuals with higher levels of psychological flexibility. Findings also showed that these moderated intervention effects were mediated by job control. Specifically, the intervention enhanced perceptions of job control, and hence its outcomes, for the people who received it, but particularly for those who had greater psychological flexibility. Discussion highlights the benefits of understanding the processes (e.g., mediators, moderators, and mediated moderators) involved in work reorganization interventions

Propuesta de implementación del método de las 5s para la mejora de producción de snacks de mikado en la fábrica bavaria S.A

El diseño y aplicación de estrategias de gestión empresarial basadas en la calidad y reducción de costos promueven la competitividad. El objetivo del proyecto es proponer la mejora del proceso productivo de snacks de Mikado en la empresa Bavaria, mediante el mantenimiento del orden y limpieza. Las limitantes identificadas recaen sobre las categorías de comportamiento del personal, seguido por varias condicionantes relacionadas con el mantenimiento de maquinaria y señalética, por último, en las categorías de capacitación y equipamiento. La propuesta de mejora parte del reconocimiento de la mejora continua y aplicación de la metodología 5´s. La estructura de la mejora se organiza a partir de 3 niveles operativos, limpieza, orden, y disciplina, las metas establecidas en cada paso de la filosofía 5´s. Se entregará a la empresa un compendio documental técnico para llevar a la práctica las modificaciones y complementos al proceso productivo dando lugar a un estado ideal de trabajo, manteniendo en todo momento el orden y limpieza. Finalmente, el análisis económico sustentará la factibilidad de inversión de la propuesta desplegada en el presente trabajo.The design and application of business management strategies based on quality and cost reduction promote competitiveness. The objective of the project is to propose the improvement of the production process of Mikado snacks in the Bavaria company, by maintaining order and cleanliness. The limitations identified fall on the behavior categories of the personnel, followed by various conditioning factors related to the maintenance of machinery and signage, and finally, in the categories of training and equipment. The improvement proposal is based on the recognition of the sub-processes and the application of the 5's methodology. The improvement structure is organized from 3 operating levels, linking the needs to meet the identified order and cleanliness requirements and the goals established in each step of the 5's philosophy. A technical documentary compendium will be delivered to the company to put into practice the modifications and complements to the production process and give rise to an ideal state of work, maintaining order and cleanliness at all times. Finally, the economic analysis will support the investment feasibility of the proposal deployed in this work

Observations of the Mating habits and Attack Pattern of Trypodendron retusum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) on Populus grandidentata in Central Michigan

Trypodendron retusum Leconte attack pattern on Populus grandidentata Michx. (Big Tooth Aspen) was studied. Mating habits of males and females involved copulation at the entrance hole bored by the female. Attack (entrance )holes averaged 15.9 cm. apart and were found to be uniformly spaced on the bark surface. Attack density was greater on standing trees than wind-thrown trees. On standing trees attack density appeared to be a function of the height rather than the diameter of the tree

Cognitive Deficits Are Associated with Frontal and Temporal Lobe White Matter Lesions in Middle-Aged Adults Living in the Community

Background: The association between brain white matter lesions and cognitive impairment in old age is well established. However, little is known about this association in midlife. As this information will inform policy for early preventative healthcare initiatives, we investigated non-periventricular frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in relation to cognitive function in 428 (232 women) community-dwelling adults aged 44 to 48 years. Results: Frontal white matter lesions were significantly associated with greater intraindividual RT variability in women, while temporal WMH were associated with face recognition deficits in men. Parietal and occipital lobe lesions were unrelated to cognitive performance. These findings did not differ when education and a range of health variables, including vascular risk factors, were taken into account. Conclusion: Gender differences in WMH-cognition associations are discussed, and we conclude that small vessel disease is present in midlife and has functional consequences which are generally not recognized. Preventative strategies should, therefore, begin early in life
