    International audienceThis work presents the proof of concept of the detection of optical index changes by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) thanks to optical fiber bundles. This proof of concept is the first essential step for the future design of a lab on fiber tool dedicated to molecular analysis for endoscopic diagnosis. Our approach is based on nanotextured optical fiber bundles comprising several thousands of individual optical fibers. These nanostructures were coated by a thin gold layer in order to exhibit interesting optical properties like SPR. The sensitivity of the bundle to optical index changes and the detection limit were measured in retro-reflection. We performed numerical simulations in order to enhance these performances based on an optimization of the fiber end geometry and the gold coating thickness. We finally obtained a detection limit of 10-4 refractive index unit, which is fully compatible with the detection of biological interactions involving large proteins or bacteria. </p

    Wireless Coupling of Conducting Polymer Actuators with Light Emission

    International audienceCombining the actuation of conducting polymers with additional functionalities is an interesting fundamental scientific challenge and increases their application potential. Here we demonstrate the possibility of direct integration of a miniaturized light emitting diode (LED) in a polypyrrole (PPy) matrix in order to achieve simultaneous wireless actuation and light emission. A light emitting diode is used as a part of an electroactive surface on which electrochemical polymerization allows direct incorporation of the electronic device into the polymer. The resulting free-standing polymer/LED hybrid can be addressed by bipolar electrochemistry to trigger simultaneously oxidation and reduction reactions at its opposite extremities, leading to a controlled deformation and an electron flow through the integrated LED. Such a dual response in the form of actuation and light emission opens up interesting perspectives in the field of microrobotics

    Local enhancement of hydrogen production by the hydrolysis of Mg17Al12 with Mg “model” material

    The effect of galvanic coupling on the corrosion behavior of Mg and Mg17Al12 in Mg-Al alloys was studied by Scanning ElectroChemical Microscopy (SECM). The effect of galvanic coupling between Mg and Mg17Al12 was investigated using a “model” Mg+Mg17Al12 material with a controlled microstructure to evaluate the hydrogen evolution at a micrometric scale. SECM maps revealed that galvanic coupling between Mg and Mg17Al12 accelerates the corrosion rate (formation of a thicker passive layer) of both components. Mg17Al12 acts controversially to a conventional cathode in galvanic system since hydrogen production by its hydrolysis reaction was found to increase due to the electron transfer with the anode (Mg).Fil: Al Bacha, S..     Protection from ultraviolet damage and photocarcinogenesis by vitamin d compounds

    © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. Exposure of skin cells to UV radiation results in DNA damage, which if inadequately repaired, may cause mutations. UV-induced DNA damage and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species also cause local and systemic suppression of the adaptive immune system. Together, these changes underpin the development of skin tumours. The hormone derived from vitamin D, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) and other related compounds, working via the vitamin D receptor and at least in part through endoplasmic reticulum protein 57 (ERp57), reduce cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and oxidative DNA damage in keratinocytes and other skin cell types after UV. Calcitriol and related compounds enhance DNA repair in keratinocytes, in part through decreased reactive oxygen species, increased p53 expression and/or activation, increased repair proteins and increased energy availability in the cell when calcitriol is present after UV exposure. There is mitochondrial damage in keratinocytes after UV. In the presence of calcitriol, but not vehicle, glycolysis is increased after UV, along with increased energy-conserving autophagy and changes consistent with enhanced mitophagy. Reduced DNA damage and reduced ROS/RNS should help reduce UV-induced immune suppression. Reduced UV immune suppression is observed after topical treatment with calcitriol and related compounds in hairless mice. These protective effects of calcitriol and related compounds presumably contribute to the observed reduction in skin tumour formation in mice after chronic exposure to UV followed by topical post-irradiation treatment with calcitriol and some, though not all, related compounds

    Separation of electric charges is the most crucial phenomenon in natural photosynthesis, and also extremely important for many artificial energy conversion systems based on semiconductors. The usual roadblock in this context is the fast recombination of electrons and holes. Here we demonstrate that the synergy of light and electric fields allows separating very efficiently electric charges over an unusually large distance in TiO2. The generated internal electric field can also be used to shuttle electrons simultaneously to the two opposite sides of a hybrid TiO2-polyaniline object.
