Leadership, Empowerment, and Motivation: An Analysis of Modern Management

The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of management in organizations and, specifically, look at the overlap between management and leadership with a particular focus on empowerment. With considerations of previous literature, current examples, and a case study interview, this literature seeks to solidify the importance of leadership by managers in the workplace. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the role of empowerment, presented by the leader and experienced by followers, in creating a thriving workplace built on culture and trust. Lastly, the literature aims to better understand the motivations of the modern employee to provide potential areas of focus that can improve manager and employee relationships. Post-Release Activity and Habitat Selection of Rehabilitated Black Bears

Despite the long history of wildlife rehabilitation and the abundance of empirical knowledge of the behavior and resource selection of wildlife species, rarely does research bridge these disciplines. Such investigations could be of value to wildlife managers and rehabilitators by revealing the suitability of the habitat at selected release sites, the wild activities, behavior, and fitness of the captive-reared individuals, and ultimately the efficacy of the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitated carnivores warrant specific attention, given that they are wide-ranging and may behave in ways that threaten human safety or interests. We investigated the behavior of orphan, rehabilitated black bear cubs (Ursus americanus) during their first year after release by utilizing GPS collars, resource selection functions, and generalized linear mixed models. To understand if rehabilitated individuals exhibited species-typical behaviors, we included metrics commonly reported in other empirical studies of this species, such as immediate post-release movements, denning chronology, release-site fidelity, and resource use. Rehabilitated bear cubs denned shortly after release exhibited late-summer dispersals, showed preferential selection for certain habitat types based on season, and displayed no inclination toward utilization of anthropogenic resources. The survival and behavior of the orphaned bears in this study suggest that welfare-based captive care and rehabilitation can be a safe and effective practice without habitation to humans or deleterious effects on fitness

Assessing Criterion Validity of Using Internet Searches as a Measure of Public Attention

We examine the criterion validity of using internet searches as a measure of public attention to United States Supreme Court (USSC) cases. First, we construct a measure of public attention to three cases by comparing relevant search terms in Google Trends to one top search terms of the year, then sum the measure week by week during the period of the research design. To test the measure’s criterion validity, we replicate Scott and Saunders’ (2006) models using their dataset (created by conducting phone interviews of a national sample using random digit dialing) that was designed to assess awareness of USSC decisions. We fnd that public attention as measured by Google Trends data is predictive of public awareness of USSC decisions for two of their three models. We conclude that using free, publicly available big data to measure public attention to USSC cases has criterion validity, and is a valuable tool for researchers studying public policy and process. Our fndings contribute to the body of research by demonstrating the validity of internet searches as a measure of public attention beyond its validity in elections and public policy, as Swearingen and Ripberger (2014) and Ripberger (2011) have done
