Mathematics teaching and learning process: the effect of problem-based learning

    Get PDF
This text is part of a larger study developed as part of the Final Internship Report for obtaining the master’s degree in Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. Its theme is Problem-Based Learning (PBL), characterized as an innovative teaching and learning methodology, which translates into the multiplicity of materials, resources and strategies. It seems relevant to us to find activities that focus on the student to captivate his attention, thus putting him in the learning focus, essential in the current educational context. In this paper we focus on the following question-problem: "How does PBL influence the teaching and learning process of mathematics?", considering the following objectives: i) to investigate whether PBL is favourable to the teaching-learning process of mathematics; ii) to reflect on mathematics educational practices based on PBL. The study, qualitative and interpretative, analyses two points of view: the students' view and perspectives on the educational practices experienced and the researcher/teacher's own self-reflection on their practices. The techniques used to collect data in investigation were participant observation and the survey trough questionnaire applied to twenty-six students from the 4th grade of the elementary school. The answers allowed us to collect very complete opinions, regarding the way to motivate students to the current educational reality, making them future adults with critical thinking, autonomy, argumentative capacity, self-determination and proactivity. The study shows that PBL proved to be a teaching and learning methodology that provides dynamism and student motivation. The results of the researcher's diary analysis, and the results of the questionnaires, showed the students' interest in the teaching practices, a greater initiative in participating in activities, and a greater commitment to the work done. The students considered themselves more active and communicative, and valued the learning of the contents worked on. However, we also found constraints in PBL, from the teachers' point of view, namely time management and activities preparation. We conclude that the researcher/teacher needs to make a prior and thorough study of the group with which he/she will work, about the content themes to be developed, to thenThis work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UIDB/05777/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Recent changes in the psychiatric paradigm related to the deinstitutionalization process presuppose the development of services of community integration. Studies conducted in other countries show better results in psychosocial rehabilitation programs than treatment in psychiatric hospitals. However, in Portugal mental health services are not consistent with the state of the art in the area. In this sense, the main goal of this work is to know and to analyse an experience, which is unique for its characteristics, of psychosocial rehabilitation in the area of mental illness, in our region. This research is a case study and the unity of analysis is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, the Association of Social Rehabilitation and Deinstitutionalization of Psychiatric Patients (ARSDOP), in which we have sought to describe its global functioning model and, more specifically, its work and residential rehabilitation models.

FastComp is a computational tool used in mechanical engineering for the determination of the forces that a composite bolted joint subjected to multiaxial loads supports until fracture occurs. The main intention of the present work was the development of a graphical user interface (GUI) for the referred software that allows its parameterization and the visualization of its results.Using VTK, a computational library for graphical objects, visualization and image processing; C#, an object-oriented programming language; and the design principles of a good human/computer interaction, a graphical interface was developed as an efficient and effective means of interaction with the FastComp software

The Influence of Obesity in the Autonomic Nervous System Activity in School-Aged Children in Northern Portugal: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Obesity is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in childhood, being an important public health issue. Excessive weight has been associated with autonomic dysfunction but the evidence in children is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of overweight and obesity on the autonomic nervous system activity, in children. Material and Methods: Data from a cross-sectional study of 1602 children, aged 7 to 12 years, was used and 858 children were included in the analysis. Body mass index was calculated and classified according to criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Body composition was characterized by bioelectrical impedance. Linear regression models were used to determine the association between body mass index, body composition and the autonomic nervous system activity, assessed by pupillometry. Results: Average dilation velocity was higher among children with obesity, according to the CDC and percentage of body fat criteria (ß = 0.053, 95% CI = 0.005 to 0.101 and ß = 0.063, 95% CI = 0.016 to 0.109, respectively). The same trend was observed for WHO and IOTF criteria (ß = 0.045, 95% CI = -0.001 to 0.091, and ß = 0.055, 95% CI = -0.001 to 0.111, respectively). CDC and WHO body mass index z-scores were also positively associated with the values of average dilation velocity (rs = 0.030, p = 0.048; and rs = 0.027, p = 0.042, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest an association between body mass and changes in the autonomic activity, Moreover, this study provides proof of concept for interventions targeting the prevention/treatment of obesity in children that may offer some benefit in re-establishing the balance of the autonomic nervous system, and subsequently preventing the consequences associated with the autonomic nervous system dysfunction

Development of highly sensitive temperature microsensors for localized measurements

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of temperature microsensors based on Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) with a meander-shaped geometry. Numerical simulations were performed for studying the sensitivity of the RTDs according to their windings numbers as well as for optimizing their layout. These RTDs were fabricated using well-established microfabrication and photolithographic techniques. The fabricated sensors feature high sensitivity (0.3542 mV/°C), linearity and reproducibility in a temperature range of 35 to 45 °C. Additionally, each sensor has a small size with a strong potential for their integration in microfluidic devices, as organ-on-a-chip, allowing the possibility for in-situ monitoring the physiochemical properties of the cellular microenvironment. This work is the result of the project NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-029394, RTChip4Theranostics, and was supported by Programa Operacional Regional do Norte–Norte Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), IP, project reference PTDC/EMD-EMD/29394/2017. Aplicação de princípios físicos na simulação da deformação de objectos em imagens

    Get PDF
