    A COMPARISON BETWEEN TLS AND UAV TECHNOLOGIES FOR HISTORICAL INVESTIGATION

    Abstract. The architectural and sculptural value of the investigated Cultural Heritage has suggested a variety of possible approaches ranging from the traditional modus operandi to the implementation of innovative technology. The conducted research implemented digital and automatic photogrammetry software using Structure from Motion or SFM. These techniques which involve the convergence of different disciplines, such as Computer Vision and photogrammetry seek to generate 3D models, that is the mathematical representation of the investigated 3D objects. The integration of UAS, photogrammetry and TLS develops 3D models able to provide more detailed information. The main purpose of the present research is to test the potentialities offered by the new survey and 3D processing systems in order to carry out historical analyses and investigations in closed environments and for small scale architecture. Starting from the acquired data, the 3D models of the altars allow a 3D comparison between the works object of study and Pozzo's treatise, also allowing speculation about their possible relations, providing extraordinary outcomes from the point of view of survey integrated methodologies and from the point of view of historical and geometric interpretation.</p

    effect of calcipotriol on etanercept partial responder psoriasis vulgaris and psoriatic arthritis patients

    Patients who respond only partially to etanercept may require additional treatments that act synergistically to improve their therapeutic response while at the same time reducing the dose required and the risk of side-effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical calcipotriol in etanercept partial responder patients. We enrolled 120 patients affected by psoriasis vulgaris and psoriatic arthritis. A 50 mg dose of etanercept was administered twice weekly for the first 12 weeks, followed by a 25 mg dose twice weekly for an additional 12 weeks. At week 12, for 45 patients who had not achieved PASI 50, calcipotriol cream was also prescribed twice daily for 4 weeks and then once daily for a further 8 weeks. At week 24, of the 45 patients in the group treated with etanercept plus calcipotriol,14 (31.1%) had achieved PASI 75, and 23 PASI 50, while 8 (17.7%) had dropped out of therapy; of the 75 patients who continued etanercept in monotherapy with a 25 mg dose twice weekly for another 12 weeks, 71 (94.6%) had achieved PASI 50 and 57 (76.0%) PASI 75. The application of calcipotriol in etanercept partial responder patients had therefore helped 37 out of 120 patients (31 %) achieve at least PASI 50. This is the first report about the controlled combination of topical calcipotriol and etanercept in a large group of psoriatic patients. The efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the combined treatment is evidenced by the good response shown at week 24 by a group of etanercept low-responder patients using drugs sparingly and limiting likely toxicity

    A collimation system for ELI-NP Gamma Beam System - design and simulation of performance

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance and refine the design of the collimation system for the gamma radiation source (GBS) currently being realised at ELI-NP facility. The gamma beam, produced by inverse Compton scattering, will provide a tunable average energy in the range between 0.2 and 20Â&nbsp;MeV, an energy bandwidth 0.5% and a flux of about 108Â&nbsp;photons/s. As a result of the inverse Compton interaction, the energy of the emitted radiation is related to the emission angle, it is maximum in the backscattering direction and decreases as the angle increase [1,2]. Therefore, the required energy bandwidth can be obtained only by developing a specific collimation system of the gamma beam, i.e. filtering out the radiation emitted at larger angles. The angular acceptance of the collimation for ELI-NP-GBS must be continuously adjustable in a range from about 700 to 60Â&nbsp;μrad, to obtain the required parameters in the entire energy range. The solution identified is a stack of adjustable slits, arranged with a relative rotation around the beam axis to obtain an hole with an approximately circular shape. In this contribution, the final collimation design and its performance evaluated by carrying out a series of detailed Geant4 simulations both of the high-energy and the low-energy beamline are presented

    Chronically Sun-damaged Melanomas Express Low Levels of Nuclear Glutathione-S-transferase-π: An Epidemiological and Clinicopathological Study in Italy

    The detoxifying enzyme glutathione–s–transferase pi (GST–π) is present in keratinocytes and melanocytes and exerts a protective role against tumour progression. Melanomas close to melanocytic naevus remnants occur less frequently on sun-exposed areas, whereas solar dermal elastosis, hallmark of chronic sun-damage, characterise melanomas on sun-exposed skin. We evaluated the expression of GST-π in 113 melanomas associated to melanocytic naevus remnants or to solar dermal elastosis, classified according to clinical characteristics, history of sun exposure, histological subtypes and AJCC staging. Chronically sun-damaged melanomas, identified by moderate–severe solar dermal elastosis, showed a lower nuclear GST-π expression and a higher thickness than those related to melanocytic naevus remnants (p < 0.03). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that male gender and chronic sun-exposure are independent risk factors significantly associated to melanomas localised on the trunk (OR = 3.36, 95% CI: 1.31–8.65; OR = 5.97, 95% CI: 1.71–20.87).     Gamma beam collimation and characterization system for ELI-NP-GBS

    ELI-NP-GBS is a gamma source based on inverse Compton interaction that will provide photons with tunable average energy ranging from 0.2 to 19.5 MeV, energy bandwidth down to 0.5% and average flux of about 108 photons/s in ultra-short pulses. Given these challenging characteristics, dedicated devices and techniques were developed to measure and monitor the gamma beam parameters during the commissioning and the operational phase. Futhermore an adjustable collimation system was developed to fulfill the beam monochromaticity requirement. The gamma beam characterization and collimation apparatus, currently assembled and under test at INFN-Ferrara laboratories, is described in this work

    Solar-like oscillations in the G9.5 subgiant beta Aquilae

    An interesting asteroseismic target is the G9.5 IV solar-like star beta Aql. This is an ideal target for asteroseismic investigations, because precise astrometric measurements are available from Hipparcos that greatly help in constraining the theoretical interpretation of the results. The star was observed during six nights in August 2009 by means of the high-resolution \'echelle spectrograph SARG operating with the TNG 3.58 m Italian telescope on the Canary Islands, exploiting the iodine cell technique. We present the result and the detailed analysis of high-precision radial velocity measurements, where the possibility of detecting time individual p-mode frequencies for the first and deriving their corresponding asymptotic values will be discussed. The time-series analysis carried out from \sim 800 collected spectra shows the typical p-mode frequency pattern with a maximum centered at 416 \muHz. In the frequency range 300 - 600 \muHz we identified for the first time six high S/N (\gtrsim 3.5) modes with l = 0,2 and 11 < n < 16 and three possible candidates for mixed modes (l = 1), although the p-mode identification for this type of star appears to be quite difficult owing to a substantial presence of avoided crossings. The large frequency separation and the surface term from the set of identified modes by means of the asymptotic relation were derived for the first time. Their values are \Delta \nu = 29.56 \pm 0.10 \muHz and \epsilon = 1.29 \pm 0.04, consistent with expectations. The most likely value for the small separation is \delta\nu_{02} = 2.55 \pm 0.71 \muHz.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted by A&

    Predictors of CD34+ cell mobilization and collection in adult men with germ cell tumors: implications for the salvage treatment strategy

    BACKGROUND: High-dose chemotherapy with tandem or triple carboplatin and etoposide course is currently the first curative choice for relapsing GCT. The collection of an adequate amount of hematopoietic (CD34(+)) stem cells is a priority. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed data of patients who underwent HDCT at 2 referral institutions. Chemotherapy followed by myeloid growth factors was applied in all cases. Uni- and multivariable models were used to evaluate the association between 2 prespecified variables and mobilization parameters. Analyses included only the first mobilizing course of chemotherapy and mobilization failures. RESULTS: A total of 116 consecutive patients underwent a mobilization attempt from December 1995 to November 2012. Mobilizing regimens included cyclophosphamide (CTX) 7 gr/m(2) (n = 39), cisplatin, etoposide, and ifosfamide (PEI) (n = 42), paclitaxel, cisplatin, and gemcitabine (TPG) (n = 11), and mixed regimens (n = 24). Thirty-seven percent were treated in first-line, 50% (n = 58) in second-line, 9.5% (n = 11) and 3.4% (n = 4) in third- and fourth-line settings, respectively. Six patients did not undergo HDCT because they were poor mobilizers, 2 in first- and second-line (1.9%), and 4 beyond the second-line (26.7%). In the multivariable model, third-line or later setting was associated with a lower CD34(+) cell peak/μL (P = .028) and a lower total CD34(+)/kg collected (P = .008). The latter was also influenced by the type of mobilizing regimen (P < .001). CONCLUSION: A decline in significant mobilization parameters was found, primarily depending on the pretreatment load. Results lend support to the role of CD34(+) cell mobilization in the therapeutic algorithm of relapsing GCT, for whom multiple HDCT courses are still an option, and potentially a cure

    Speaker-independent emotion recognition exploiting a psychologically-inspired binary cascade classification schema

    In this paper, a psychologically-inspired binary cascade classification schema is proposed for speech emotion recognition. Performance is enhanced because commonly confused pairs of emotions are distinguishable from one another. Extracted features are related to statistics of pitch, formants, and energy contours, as well as spectrum, cepstrum, perceptual and temporal features, autocorrelation, MPEG-7 descriptors, Fujisakis model parameters, voice quality, jitter, and shimmer. Selected features are fed as input to K nearest neighborhood classifier and to support vector machines. Two kernels are tested for the latter: Linear and Gaussian radial basis function. The recently proposed speaker-independent experimental protocol is tested on the Berlin emotional speech database for each gender separately. The best emotion recognition accuracy, achieved by support vector machines with linear kernel, equals 87.7%, outperforming state-of-the-art approaches. Statistical analysis is first carried out with respect to the classifiers error rates and then to evaluate the information expressed by the classifiers confusion matrices. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011
