Looking at British Sephardic Jews who seek Portuguese citizenship post-Brexit: A grounded theory visual arts-based research approach

    Get PDF
This study investigates how Grounded Theory (GT) can be intertwined with arts based practice in order to give artists a more rigorous methodological basis for generating theories. This approach is examined via a case study exploring the recent phenomenon of British Sephardic Jews who are applying for Portuguese citizenship in unprecedented numbers since the 2016 UK referendum initiating Brexit. This has been possible since the Portuguese and Spanish governments approved legislation addressing a period in their histories when Jews were expelled from the peninsula. There is limited research available on contemporary British Sephardic Jewish communities and no research on the effects of these recent national policies. Grounded Theory is occasionally used to evaluate art based projects; this is the first time GT and Visual Grounded Theory Methodology is used as an integral part of the creative process. The structure of this project is guided by arts-based research design. Similar multimedia installations include; Grada Kilomba's "Secrets to tell" and Melanie Gilligan's "Crisis in the Credit System". This interdisciplinary analysis aims to deepen the possibilities of socially engaged multimedia practice and our understanding of how Sephardic Jews are making sense of Brexit

The present study analyses the total yield gap in paddy crop in to three different gaps viz. yield gap-I, yield gap-II and total yield gap. The study based on primary as well as secondary data was carried out in three districts of plain zone namely Rajnandgoan, Mahasamund and Dhamtari districts. At the second and third stage of sampling, two blocks and two villages were selected from each district and each block, respectively to constitute a total of 6 blocks and 12 villages. Primary data were collected from a sample of 240 paddy farmers (20 from each village) through personal interview method and secondary data were collected from respective districts of K.V.K in crop year 2016-17. Most of the sample farmers were growing Rajeshwari (IGKV R -1) variety of paddy crop. Yield gap analysis shows that 13.22 per cent yield gap was estimated between potential and potential farm yield where as yield gap between potential farm yield and actual yield was estimated overall 20.00 per cent. Index of realized potential farm yield was observed 71.78 per cent on marginal farms to 89.44 per cent on large farms with an overall average of 80.00 per cent. It may be inferred from the study that the use of important variable has to be carefully extended by the paddy farmers to minimize the yield gap. Besides, the input supply of quality inputs viz. seeds, farm yard manure, irrigation and plant protection measures on different categories of farms may help to reduce the yield gap of the crop on the one hand and raise the income of the cultivators on the other

Background: Safai karmchari plays an important role in maintaining the health and hygiene in the cities. This job exposes safai karmchari to a variety of risk factors such as dust, volatile organic matter and mechanical stress, which makes them susceptible to certain occupational diseases. The aim of this study was to find out the awareness about occupational health hazard and safety measures practiced by safai karmchari.Materials and Methods: This descriptive study had been carried out during the month of December 2017 to mid of February 2018 in the New Delhi Municipal Council area. Primary data was collected through structured observation checklist and interview with 164 safai karmchari. The data was analyzed using Microsoft excel 2007.Results: Results shows majority of respondent had knowledge about probability of skin allergy/injury/infection while collecting garbage by hand. Most of them had knowledge about probability of traffic accident while working on street. Most of respondents had knowledge about probability of fall while sweeping slippery surface and probability of respiratory problems/eye allergy, also probability of musculoskeletal problems due to their work. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) apron with reflector, shoes, cap, mask were used by most of the safai karmchari, but few of them uses gloves while working. Conclusion: It was concluded that the knowledge about occupational hazards as well as its preventive measures was more among trained safai karmchari than in untrained safai karmchari. However, a smaller number of respondents was using PPE while working. There is a need to develop SOP for different activities and preventive measure for safai karmchari. A training program should be introduced

Hydatid cyst of the kidney: a case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
Primary involvement of the kidney is rare in case of hydatid disease. We present a case of primary left renal hydatid cyst in a 40 year old female patient admitted with left lumbar pain radiating to the back. Computed tomography of the patient was done and was suggestive of hydatid cyst involving the lower pole of the left kidney. The cyst was managed by left Nephrectomy with open surgical excision and preoperative course of Albendazole. This case emphasizes on better detection and evaluation of such rare cases to identify better treatment strategies

INVESTIGATION OF CAPACITY GAINS IN MIMO CORRELATED RICIAN FADING CHANNELS SYSTEMS

This paper investigate the effect of Rician fading and correlation on the capacity and diversity of MIMO channels. The use of antenna arrays at both sides of the wireless communication link (MIMO systems) can increase channel capacity provided the propagation medium is rich scattering or Rayleigh fading and the antenna arrays at both sides are uncorrelated. However, the presence of line-of-sight (LOS) component and correlation of real world wireless channels may affect the system performance. Along with that we also investigate power distribution methods for higher capacity gains and effect of CSI at the transmitter on the capacity for range of SNR. Our investigation follows capacity gain as function of number of antennas and signal-to-noise (SNR) power ratio Block and frequency nonselective Rician fading channel is assumed, and the effect of Rician factor (L) and the correlation parameter (ρ) on the capacity and diversity gains of MIMO channels are found. Background: Women with previous cesarean sections constitute a high risk group in obstetrics, with associated complications. The cesarean section carries 3 fold risk of mortality compared with vaginal deliveries. The study was conducted to determine the mode of deliveries after previous one cesarean section, maternal and fetal complication. Methods: This is a prospective observation study. Total 150 patients of previous one caesarean with gestational weeks between 37 to 40 weeks admitted in labour room of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in Sola Civil Hospital with spontaneous onset of labour, over a period of one year from April 2014 to April 2015 or till the desired sample will reached. Results: In the present study, out of 150 pregnant women with history of previous one LSCS who were subjected to this study, 39(26%) underwent elective LSCS, commonest indication being previous pregnancy bad experience (38.46%). 111(74%) underwent trial of labour after cesarean section out of it 77(69.36%) had successful VBAC and 34(30.63%) underwent repeat emergency LSCS. Maternal complications were higher in Emergency LSCS group than in those had a successful VBAC (17.64% vs.3.89%)). Neonatal complications were also higher in Emergency LSCS group than in those had a successful VBAC (2.95% vs. 0%).Conclusions: With proper case selection, appropriate timing and close supervision trial of labour after prior LSCS is safe and often successful
