Funds of Knowledge that Support Teacher-Student Relationships: A Narrative Study of Effective Teachers

Latino/a students currently have lower graduation and higher dropout rates than their white peers. This population of students also performs lower on state exams. This qualitative study explored teacher-student relationships and their impact on Latino/a student populations. Using Funds of Knowledge and a social justice perspective, the study characterized positive teacherstudent relationships and ways that schools can support their formation. This dissertation study consisted of two rounds of interviews; participants were interviewed individually and then as part of two focus groups. The first phase consisted of one-on-one interviews, where the participants were asked questions on effectiveness, teacher-student relationships, and administrative support. The results from these interviews were analyzed for themes. The themes were then brought to the participants in forms of two focus groups for further exploration and clarity. Findings indicate that teachers characterize six themes in positive teacher-student relationships; student voice, humanization, trust, openness, respect, and personal connections. Three areas of school support were also uncovered; this included community circle, time to connect, and opportunities outside the classroom. The findings support the need for educators to be aware of the elements of positive relationships and to include these areas of school support in teacher and leader preparation programs

The Perspectives of Students with Learning Disabilities

One hundred and fifteen middle and high school students with learning disabilities selected from the Learning Disabilities Association of Virginia were surveyed on their perceptions on homework. An adapted questionnaire was used to collect data for this study with an 18.22% return rate. Descriptive statistics and Chi square were used to analyze data for this study. Results obtained from the Chi square analysis show that middle school students daydreamed or played with objects and needed reminders to start homework more often than high school students. Several inconsistencies regarding completion rates of homework and amount of complaining about homework were revealed in this study

Influence of innate immunity on cancer cell stemness

Even if cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent only a small proportion of the tumor mass, they significantly account for tumor maintenance, resistance to therapies, relapse and metastatic spread, due to their increased capacity of self-renewal, multipotency, tumorigenicity and quiescence. Emerging evidence suggests that the immune contexture within the tumor microenvironment (TME) determines both the response to therapy and the clinical outcome. In this context, CSCs acquire immune evasion skills by editing immune cell functions and sculpting the immunosuppressive landscape of TME. Reciprocally, infiltrating immune cells influence CSCs self-renewal, tumorigenicity and metastasis. In this review, we summarize the immunomodulatory properties of CSCs, as well as the impact of innate immune cells on cancer cells stemness in the different phases of cancer immunoediting process and neoplastic progression

Syrjäytymistä ehkäisemässä - Toimintatutkimus nuorten ryhmämuotoisesta kuntouttavasta työtoiminnasta ja tehostetun tuen palvelusta

Tutkielman tavoitteena on antaa ääni Mediapaja-kokeilun nuorille sekä heidän sosiaalityöntekijöille ja sosiaaliohjaajille. Kokeilussa haettiin uudenlaista työmuotoa sosiaalipalveluiden kentälle ja tarjottiin tehostettua tukea Mediapaja-kokeiluun osallistuville nuorille. Halusin nostaa esiin nuorten sekä heidän sosiaalityöntekijöidensä ja sosiaaliohjaajiensa kokemukset kokeilusta sekä mitkä tekijät heidän mukaansa ehkäisivät syrjäytymistä. Lähestymistapana oli toimintatutkimus. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu Mediapajaan osallistuvien nuorten sekä heidän sosiaalityöntekijöidensä ja sosiaaliohjaajiensa haastatteluista sekä minun tutkimuspäiväkirjastani. Analyysimenetelmänä on käytetty sisällönanalyysiä. Tämän tutkielman tulos on, että Mediapajan ryhmämuotoisen toiminnan ja yksilöllisen tehostetun tuen voidaan todeta ehkäisevän nuorten syrjäytymistä. Nuorten ja työntekijöiden positiiviset kokemukset kokeilusta olivat hyvin samankaltaisia. Mediapajan toiminnan osalta positiivisena kokemuksena ja syrjäytymistä ehkäisevänä tekijänä nähtiin nuorten arvostava kohtaaminen, nuorten vuorovaikutustaitojen ja itseluottamuksen lisääntyminen, jatkosuunnitelmien tarkentuminen ja tarvittavien palveluiden turvaaminen. Negatiiviset kokemukset olivat myös yhtenevät nuorten ja työntekijöiden kesken. Näitä olivat suunnitteluprosessin sujumattomuus, tiedottamisen ja rekrytoinnin haasteet. Osanottajat huomasivat myös, että ryhmämuotoinen toiminta ei sovi kaikille, vaan se voi myös viedä tietyissä tilanteissa nuoren tilannetta jopa huonompaan suuntaan. Tehostetusta tuesta hyötyivät eniten ne nuoret, jotka joutuivat keskeyttämään ryhmämuotoisen toiminnan. Tehostetusta tuesta työntekijät toivat enemmän esiin positiivisia kokemuksia kuin nuoret. Työntekijät näkivät tehostetun tuen syrjäytymistä ehkäisevänä hyvänä toimintatapana, koska sen myötä nuoren tilanne aukeni työntekijälle kokonaisvaltaisemmin ja näin pystyttiin tarjoamaan oikeanlaisia palveluita ja tukimuotoja sekä laatimaan yhdessä jatkosuunnitelmia
