The political economy of competing regional images: the case of Tuscany's brands
This essay is based on empirical evidence from the case of Tuscany (Italy) and follows previous work on the role and meaning of image in regional development and innovation policies (Bellini, 2004). Discussions about image and branding policies is usually placed in the framework of "place marketing" and marketing literature helps in defining the features, components and main characters of image and of its relationship with local identity. We suggest, however, that managing images is also a political process with significant impact in supporting and shaping the scenario (perceptions and expectations) for innovation policies. In fact this process implies a competition between images in order to "control" the representation of the past, present and future of an area. This competition aims at influencing the policy agenda by manipulating the gap between image and identity. In other words, we suggest that image-related policies should be considered part of the toolbox of a modern innovation policy.

Geographic information for the management of flood risk insurance
This paper describes a research project aimed at introducing geographic
information in the management of flood insurance policies through GIS
technologies. The main scope is the development of a toolbox to take
geographic information into account in the calculation of flood insurance
premiums.
Several factors influence real estate flood vulnerability: building’s exposure
depends on territorial aspects, like the presence of flood areas, the elevation
profile, the position of the building compared to hazard zones, but it is also
determined by the construction characteristics of the building itself.
In a pilot project workflows were set up to manage the whole underwriting
process, following a rational methodology and taking into account all variables
influencing building flood vulnerability. The developed tools are all based on
free and open source software, server-side as a WebGIS tool and API and clientside
as an Android application.
Through a more accurate evaluation of the risk, the insurer is allowed to better
manage its risk exposure and this way guarantee solvency in the case of a
flood event and on the other hand be more competitive on the market
Open Data e Propriet? Intellettual.
Flood risk management: the role of geo-information in the insurance industry
The use of Geographic Information Systems for management purposes is going beyond the traditional field of territorial government and new applications are developed supporting other sectors dealing with territorial issues: insurance industry is one of the sectors where spatial data are acquiring importance, introducing an innovative way for the definition of flood risk insurance premiums
Progress with PXIE MEBT Chopper
A capability to provide a large variety of bunch patterns is crucial for the
concept of the Project X serving MW-range beam to several experiments
simultaneously. This capability will be realized by the Medium Energy Beam
Transport's (MEBT) chopping system that will divert 80% of all bunches of the
initially 5mA, 2.1 MeV CW 162.5 MHz beam to an absorber according to a
pre-programmed bunch-by-bunch selection. Being considered one of the most
challenging components, the chopping system will be tested at the Project X
Injector Experiment (PXIE) facility that will be built at Fermilab as a
prototype of the Project X front end. The bunch deflection will be made by two
identical sets of travelling-wave kickers working in sync. Currently, two
versions of the kickers are being investigated: a helical 200 Ohm structure
with a switching-type 500 V driver and a planar 50 Ohm structure with a linear
250 V amplifier. This paper will describe the chopping system scheme and
functional specifications for the kickers, present results of electromagnetic
measurements of the models, discuss possible driver schemes, and show a
conceptual mechanical design.Comment: 3 pp. 3rd International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC 2012)
