    Muography applied to nuclear waste storage sites

    Legacy storage sites for nuclear waste can pose a serious environmental problem. In fact, since certain sites date from the middle of the last century when safety protocols had not been properly established and strict bookkeeping was not enforced, a situation has evolved where the content of storage silos is basically known only with a large uncertainty both on quantity and quality. At the same time maintenance work on old storage structures is becoming ever more urgent and yet this work requires exactly that information which is now lacking on the type of waste that was stored inside. Because of the difficulty in accessing the storage silos and the near impossibility of making visual inspections inside, techniques have to be developed which can determine the presence or absence of heavy elements (i.e. uranium) within the structures. Muography is a very promising technique which could allow the survey of previously inaccessible structures. We have begun an evaluation performing feasibility studies using simulations based on real case scenarios. This paper will outline the storage site scenarios and then present some of the results obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations

    Metabolomics of COPD Pulmonary Rehabilitation Outcomes via Exhaled Breath Condensate

    : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by different phenotypes and clinical presentations. Therefore, a single strategy of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) does not always yield the expected clinical outcomes as some individuals respond excellently, others discreetly, or do not respond at all. Fifty consecutive COPD patients were enrolled. Of them, 35 starting a 5-week PR program were sampled at admission (T0), after 2 (T2W) and 5 (T5W) weeks, while 15 controls not yet on PR were tested at T0 and T5W. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) profiling of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and multivariate statistical analysis were applied to investigate the relationship between biomarkers and clinical parameters. The model including the three classes correctly located T2W between T0 and T5W, but 38.71% of samples partially overlapped with T0 and 32.26% with T5W, suggesting that for some patients PR is already beneficial at T2W (32.26% overlapping with T5W), while for others (38.71% overlapping with T0) more time is required. Rehabilitated patients presented several altered biomarkers. In particular, methanol from T0 to T5W decreased in parallel with dyspnea and fatigue, while the walk distance increased. Methanol could be ascribed to lung inflammation. We demonstrated that the metabolic COPD phenotype clearly evolves during PR, with a strict relationship between clinical and molecular parameters. Methanol, correlating with clinical parameters, represents a useful biomarker for monitoring personalized outcomes and establishing more targeted protocols

    Cardiovascular risk markers in patients with primary aldosteronism: A systematic review and meta-analysis of literature studies

    Background/objectives: Several studies reported an increased cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA). We performed a meta-analysis on the impact of PA on major markers of CV risk. Methods: Studies on the relationship between PA and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT), prevalence of carotid plaques, flow-mediated dilation (FMD), nitrate-mediated dilation (NMD), pulse-wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AIx), and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were systematically searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and EMBASE databases. Results: 12 case-control studies (445 cases, 472 controls) were included. Compared to subjects with essential hypertension (EH), PA patients showed a higher CCA-IMT (MD: 0.12 mm; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.16; P<0.00001), and a higher aortic-PWV (272 cases and 240 controls, MD: 1.39 m/s; 95% CI: 0.90, 1.87; P<0.00001). In contrast, non-significant differences were found in AIx and AIx normalized to a heart rate of 75 beats per minute (AIx@75). When compared to normotensive subjects, PA patients showed significantly higher CCA-IMT (MD: 0.16 mm; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.27; P=0.004), aortic-PWV (MD: 3.74 m/s; 95% CI: 3.43, 4.05; P<0.00001), AIx@75 (MD: 8.59%; 95% CI: 0.69, 16.50; P=0.03), and a significantly lower FMD (MD: -2.52%; 95% CI: -3.64, -1.40; P<0.0001). Sensitivity and subgroup analyses substantially confirmed our results. Metaregression models showed that male gender, diabetes, and smoking habit impact on the observed results. Conclusions: PA appears significantly associated with markers of subclinical atherosclerosis and CV risk. These findings could help establish more specific CV prevention strategies in this clinical setting

    Lipid profile changes in patients with rheumatic diseases receiving a treatment with TNF-α blockers: a meta-analysis of prospective studies.

    Some studies showed an anti-atherogenic effect of TNF-α blockers on lipid profile, but these data have been challenged.To perform a meta-analysis on lipid profile changes induced by TNF-α blocker treatment.Prospective studies on rheumatic patients receiving TNF-α blockers and providing before-and-after treatment values of triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDLc), LDL-cholesterol (LDLc), and atherogenic index (AI) were included. Standardized mean differences (SMD) in lipid profile were analyzed at short-term (2-12 weeks), middle-term (13-24 weeks), and long-term (25-52 weeks) assessments.Thirty articles (1707 patients) were included. TNF-α blockers determined an increase in TC at short-term, middle-term, and long-term assessments (SMD: 0.20 mmol/L [95% CI: 0.04, 0.35]; SMD: 0.27 mmol/L [95% CI: 0.08, 0.46]; SMD: 0.22 mmol/L [95% CI: 0.01, 0.43]). HDLc increased only at the short-term assessment (SMD: 0.19 mmol/L [95% CI: 0.10, 0.28]), and TGs achieved a significant increase at the long-term assessment (SMD: 0.19 mmol/L [95% CI: 0.04, 0.34]). LDLc and AI were not affected by TNF-α blocker treatment.Slight but significant increases in TC occurred without any significant change in LDLc and AI. Changes in HDLc and TGs were not consistent among the different time point assessments. These quantitative changes in lipid profile do not seem to be able to explain cardiovascular risk improvement reported in patients receiving TNF-α blockers. Further studies on other mechanisms are needed to address this issue

    Several on-going activities exploiting the potential of the muon-absorption radiography technique are focusing on the study of large volcanic structures located in different geographical regions. Nonetheless, the possible application of this non-destructive surveying method to other fields is also under consideration by different groups. Looking backward to the history of muon radiography, we can learn how the first important success of this technique was achieved in the archaeological field by the physicist Luis W. Alvarez in the 1960s. Further examples of possible applications can be found concerning geological and mining applications. In this paper a possible application of muon absorption radiography in the context of the archaeological research is proposed. Results of a simulation of a simplified case study are presented

    A flexible and adaptive simulation framework based on Geant4 is presented. The framework has been developed in order to speed up the deployment of full-featured Monte Carlo simulation codes for small/medium sized particle detection experiments with generic geometries.     The MURAVES muon telescope: technology and expected performances

    The MURAVES project aims to study the inner structure of the upper part of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano by muon radiography (muography) technique. Very high energy muons, produced by cosmic rays in the at- mosphere, can penetrate large thickness of rocks. By measuring the at- tenuation of the muons flux trough the volcano cone is possible to obtain a 2D image of the density structure. Internal discontinuities, with a spa- tial resolution of about 10 m, can be, in principle, resolved. An absolute average density measurement can be provided too. The project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University, Research and Education (MIUR), is led by INGV and INFN.     The MURAVES telescope front-end electronics and data acquisition

    The MURAVES detector is a 4 m 2 muon tracker equipped with a low power consumption electronic and designed to work in volcanic areas. Due to the great amount of channels (~1500) the detector is equipped with a multilayer electronic for data acquisition. It consists of 12 slave boards and 1 master board per square meter of detector and a single Raspberry Pi board that rules the whole set of one-square-meter detectors. Because of this modularity, we can enlarge in principle the detector surface by adding more one-square-meter elements. In the present work, we resume the main features of the MURAVES detector designed for the muography of volcanoes and, more generally, for the imaging of the underground. We focus on the capability to fine tune every single channel of the detector and the precise measure of the time of flight of the muons. The latter uses a time expansion technique and it should allow us to make a background rejection never obtained until now

The cause for this ossification is currently unknown but a genetic contribution has been hypothesized. Over the last decade, many studies on the genetics of ectopic calcification disorders have been performed, mainly on OPLL. Most of these studies were based on linkage analysis and case control association studies. Animal models have provided some clues but so far, the involvement of the identified genes has not been confirmed in human cases. In the last few years, many common variants in several genes have been associated with OPLL. However, these associations have not been at definitive levels of significance and evidence of functional significance is generally modest. The current evidence suggests a multifactorial aetiopathogenesis for DISH and OPLL with a subset of cases showing a stronger genetic component.publishersversionpublishe
