    Real-time monitoring of proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack failure

    Uneven pressure drops in a 75-cell 9.5-kWe proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack with a U-shaped flow configuration have been shown to cause localised flooding. Condensed water then leads to localised cell heating, resulting in reduced membrane durability. Upon purging of the anode manifold, the resulting mechanical strain on the membrane can lead to the formation of a pin-hole/membrane crack and a rapid decrease in open circuit voltage due to gas crossover. This failure has the potential to cascade to neighbouring cells due to the bipolar plate coupling and the current density heterogeneities arising from the pin-hole/membrane crack. Reintroduction of hydrogen after failure results in cell voltage loss propagating from the pin-hole/membrane crack location due to reactant crossover from the anode to the cathode, given that the anode pressure is higher than the cathode pressure. Through these observations, it is recommended that purging is avoided when the onset of flooding is observed to prevent irreparable damage to the stack

    This article offers a review of shifts in feminist legal theory since the early 1990s. We first use our respective histories and fields of expertise to provide a brief overview and highlight some key themes within feminist legal theory. We then examine Social & Legal Studies (SLS), asking whether it has met its key goal of integrating feminist analyses at every level. Our review suggests that SLS has offered many important contributions to feminist legal scholarship but has not fulfilled its lofty goal of integrating feminist analyses at every level of scholarship. It features feminist work quite consistently and some degree of mainstreaming is evident, as is the international reach of SLS. Too many articles fail, however, to incorporate or even mention feminist approaches. We end with thoughts about, and hopes for, the future of legal feminism, examining efforts to revitalize the field and suggesting possible directions for the future

    Characterisation of the VELO High Voltage System

    The high voltage system supplies the bias voltage to the 88 silicon sensors which comprise the LHCb Vertex Locator (VELO). This note describes the results of the tests which have been performed on the hardware of the high voltage system of the VELO. Each individual test detailed in this note corresponds to a specific requirement of the system. These requirements arise primarily from ensuring the safety of the silicon sensors and the quality of the data taken from the VELO modules. The tests performed are in four categories: normal operation of the high voltage system; verification of its stability under operation; discussion of its behaviour in failure modes; and details of operation at low voltage. Noteworthy issues, identified through the tests, include the behaviour of the high voltage modules at voltages below 9V, the current limit that can be applied during ramping of the voltage, and the speed with which the voltage is cut during failures of the system. The results of these tests provide high confidence that the high voltage system can be safely used and demonstrate that low noise is produced by the power supplies

    Yield performance of cassava genotypes in the forest and coastal ecologies of Southern Ghana

    Root yield performances of 10 cassava genotypes were assessed across six environments to determine stable cassava (Manihot esculenta) cultivar(s) for root yield in southern Ghana. The assessments were carried out in the forest zone (Fumesua), coastal savanna zone (Ohawu) and coastal savanna zone (Pokuase) in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 growing seasons. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Additive main effects and multiplicative interactions analysis (AMMI) indicated that genotype by environment interactions were significant. Genotype 6 (CR52A-25) was the highest yielding genotype with a root yield of 60.33 kg ha-1, while Genotype 9 (CR59-4) had the lowest root yield of 26.86 kg ha-1. Root yield was significantly lower (P = 0.001) at the forest zone compared to the coastal savanna zones

    Heat stress in Africa under high intensity climate change.

    Extreme weather events are major causes of loss of life and damage infrastructure worldwide. High temperatures cause heat stress on humans, livestock, crops and infrastructure. Heat stress exposure is projected to increase with ongoing climate change. Extremes of temperature are common in Africa and infrastructure is often incapable of providing adequate cooling. We show how easily accessible cooling technology, such as evaporative coolers, prevent heat stress in historic timescales but are unsuitable as a solution under climate change. As temperatures increase, powered cooling, such as air conditioning, is necessary to prevent overheating. This will, in turn, increase demand on already stretched infrastructure. We use high temporal resolution climate model data to estimate the demand for cooling according to two metrics, firstly the apparent temperature and secondly the discomfort index. For each grid cell we calculate the heat stress value and the amount of cooling required to turn a heat stress event into a non heat stress event. We show the increase in demand for cooling in Africa is non uniform and that equatorial countries are exposed to higher heat stress than higher latitude countries. We further show that evaporative coolers are less effective in tropical regions than in the extra tropics. Finally, we show that neither low nor high efficiency coolers are sufficient to return Africa to current levels of heat stress under climate change
