Polynomial-time proofs that groups are hyperbolic

Funding: UK EPSRC grant number EP/I03582X/1.It is undecidable in general whether a given finitely presented group is word hyperbolic. We use the concept of pregroups, introduced by Stallings (1971), to define a new class of van Kampen diagrams, which represent groups as quotients of virtually free groups. We then present a polynomial-time procedure that analyses these diagrams, and either returns an explicit linear Dehn function for the presentation, or returns fail, together with its reasons for failure. Furthermore, if our procedure succeeds we are often able to produce in polynomial time a word problem solver for the presentation that runs in linear time. Our algorithms have been implemented, and when successful they are many orders of magnitude faster than KBMAG, the only comparable publicly available software.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Newtonian nonlinear hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics

We use covariant methods to analyse the nonlinear evolution of self-gravitating, non-relativistic media. The formalism is first applied to imperfect fluids, aiming at the kinematic effects of viscosity, before extended to inhomogeneous magnetised environments. The nonlinear electrodynamic formulae are derived and successively applied to electrically resistive and to highly conductive fluids. By nature, the covariant equations isolate the magnetic effects on the kinematics and the dynamics of the medium, combining mathematical transparency and physical clarity. Employing the Newtonian analogue of the relativistic 1+3 covariant treatment, also facilitates the direct comparison with the earlier relativistic studies and helps to identify the differences in an unambiguous way. The purpose of this work is to set the framework and take a first step towards the detailed analytical study of complex nonlinear systems, like non-relativistic astrophysical plasmas and collapsing protogalactic clouds.Comment: Typos corrected, references added and updated (MNRAS in press

Engineered repressors are potent inhibitors of androgen receptor activity

    Get PDF
Prostate cancer growth is dependent upon the Androgen Receptor (AR) pathway, hence therapies for this disease often target this signalling axis. Such therapies are successful in the majority of patients but invariably fail after a median of 2 years and tumours progress to a castrate resistant stage (CRPC). Much evidence exists to suggest that the AR remains key to CRPC growth and hence remains a valid therapeutic target. Here we describe a novel method to inhibit AR activity, consisting of an interaction motif, that binds to the AR ligand-binding domain, fused to repression domains. These 'engineered repressors' are potent inhibitors of AR activity and prostate cancer cell growth and importantly inhibit the AR under circumstances in which conventional therapies would be predicted to fail, such as AR mutation and altered cofactor levels
