A review of Goerita (Trichoptera: Goeridae) : with description of a new species

    Get PDF
Goerita Ross is restricted to the Appalachian Mountains and Allegheny Plateau of eastern North America. A new species is described, bringing the total in the genus to three. Keys to larvae and adults are presented, and the distributions of the species are recorded

Recent trends in US patent grants and issues to be considered

    Get PDF
The life sciences have changed radically since the Convention on Biological Diversity first opened for signatures in 1992. Traditional organism-based approaches to discovery and use of genetic resources have been supplanted by molecular approaches. Biodiversity prospecting is more likely to be a programmatic bioinformatics activity rather than an activity conducted by field scientists. Access to genetic resources is no longer centered on a hunt for novel species. Rather, the hunt is for novel genes and metabolic pathways that can be cloned into well-understood expression systems and readily scaled-up for industrial production. Information about contemporary research, development, and manufacturing practices needs to be addressed, especially when those genes do not need to be associated with their native host at the time of discovery. Information about the research organizations participating in all phases of the discovery and development process also needs to be considered, especially when it involves partnerships between academic and industrial organizations.

We present a high-level view of recent trends in the issuance of US patent grants to commercial and non-commercial research organizations, and introduce a technology that is already in place which can be applied to monitoring the use of genetic materials by various stakeholders in an open and transparent manner, as intended under the International Regime for Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).

The silver lining in Trump’s Paris pullout: a chance for the EU and China to take the leadership mantle

    Get PDF
Donald Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement produced a strong reaction from European leaders. Charles F. Parker argues the decision may provide an opportunity for the EU to strengthen its climate change leadership by forging an alliance with China. He suggests that there were several silver linings to the US withdrawal, but the EU will have to translate its rhetoric into concrete action if it is to reclaim leadership over the issue

The Currents of Casco Bay and the Prediction of Oil Spill Trajectories

    Get PDF
This is one of two reports describing the results of an oceanographic survey dealing with the currents and biology and chemistry of Casco Bay. The aim of this report is to provide pertinent data on the marine system for the prediction of oil spill movements and contains information on the tidal and non-tidal currents, water column structure and bottom topography of the area showing how they interrelate to affect the disposition of such materials introduced into the system. Additional discussions on the analysis of wind driven circulation and its effect on the movements of surface oil are included

Trends in Angler Expenditures and Economic Contributions of Tourism at a Trophy Fishery in Texas

    Get PDF
This thesis aimed to improve decision-maker access to economic information by testing a pricejusting methodology to annually update expenditure information for economic impacts analyses and by conducting a trends analysis of economic sector contributions to a regional economy. A secondary data analysis of historical angler survey data generated expenditure profiles adjusted over time using price indices. A replication survey was conducted to compare expenditures. Grouping anglers by trip type (one-day/multiple-day) resulted in expenditure profiles that were generally consistent over time as anglers spent approximately 75and75 and 130 on one-day and multiple-day trips, respectively. These expenditures resulted in total economic impacts of over $13 million. A series of automatic social accounting matrices (ASAM) were then employed to execute economic base analyses, quantifying the role of sectors in the regional economy. The tourism sector consistently contributed over 20% of gross employment and almost 10% of gross output over time
