    Scaling ansatz, four zero Yukawa textures and large θ13\theta_{13}

    We investigate 'Scaling ansatz' in the neutrino sector within the framework of type I seesaw mechanism with diagonal charged lepton and right handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices (MRM_R). We also assume four zero texture of Dirac neutrino mass matrices (mDm_D) which severely constrain the phenomenological outcomes of such scheme. Scaling ansatz and the present neutrino data allow only Six such matrices out of 126 four zero Yukawa matrices. In this scheme, in order to generate large θ13\theta_{13} we break scaling ansatz in mDm_D through a perturbation parameter and we also show our breaking scheme is radiatively stable. We further investigate CP violation and baryogenesis via leptogenesis in those surviving textures.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    The Complementarity of Eastern and Western Hemisphere Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

    We present a general formalism for extracting information on the fundamental parameters associated with neutrino masses and mixings from two or more long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. This formalism is then applied to the current most likely experiments using neutrino beams from the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) and Fermilab's NuMI beamline. Different combinations of muon neutrino or muon anti-neutrino running are considered. To extract the type of neutrino mass hierarchy we make use of the matter effect. Contrary to naive expectation, we find that both beams using neutrinos is more suitable for determining the hierarchy provided that the neutrino energy divided by baseline (E/LE/L) for NuMI is smaller than or equal to that of JHF. Whereas to determine the small mixing angle, θ13\theta_{13}, and the CP or T violating phase δ\delta, one neutrino and the other anti-neutrino is most suitable.     On the Coupling of Gravitons to Matter

    Using relationships between open and closed strings, we present a construction of tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons minimally coupled to matter in terms of gauge theory partial amplitudes. In particular, we present examples of amplitudes with gravitons coupled to vectors or to a single fermion pair. We also present two examples with massive graviton exchange, as would arise in the presence of large compact dimensions. The gauge charges are represented by flavors of dynamical scalars or fermions. This also leads to an unconventional decomposition of color and kinematics in gauge theories.Comment: RevTex, 4 page

    Untangling CP Violation and the Mass Hierarchy in Long Baseline Experiments

    In the overlap region, for the normal and inverted hierarchies, of the neutrino-antineutrino bi-probability space for νμνe\nu_\mu \to \nu_e appearance, we derive a simple identity between the solutions in the (sin22θ13\sin^2 2\theta_{13}, sinδ\sin \delta) plane for the different hierarchies. The parameter sin22θ13\sin^2 2\theta_{13} sets the scale of the νμνe\nu_\mu \to \nu_e appearance probabilities at the atmospheric δmatm22.4×103\delta m^2_{atm} \approx 2.4 \times 10^{-3} eV2^2 whereas sinδ\sin \delta controls the amount of CP violation in the lepton sector. The identity between the solutions is that the difference in the values of sinδ\sin \delta for the two hierarchies equals twice the value of sin22θ13\sqrt{\sin^2 2\theta_{13}} divided by the {\it critical} value of sin22θ13\sqrt{\sin^2 2\theta_{13}}. We apply this identity to the two proposed long baseline experiments, T2K and NOν\nuA, and we show how it can be used to provide a simple understanding of when and why fake solutions are excluded when two or more experiments are combined.     Identifying risk and mitigating gambling-related harm in online poker

    The present paper conducts a critical analysis of the potential for gambling-related harm in relation to online poker participation, and a theoretical evaluation of current responsible gambling strategies employed to mitigate harm in online gambling and applies the evaluation of these strategies specifically to online poker gambling. Theoretically, the primary risk for harm in online poker is the rapid and continuous nature of poker provisions online, and has been demonstrated to be associated with disordered gambling behaviour, including the chasing of monetary losses. The following responsible gambling features were deemed relevant for consideration: informed player choice, voluntary self-exclusion, employee intervention, pre-commitment, in-game feedback, behavioural tracking tools, and age restriction and verification. Although current responsible gambling features are evaluated as theoretically robust, there remains a fundamental need for experimental validation of their effectiveness. Furthermore, despite online poker gamblers perceiving the responsible gambling features as valuable tools, in reality very few players regularly use available responsible gambling features. Ultimately, for the online poker gambling industry to retain market credibility and avoid substantial top-down regulation, it is imperative to demonstrate effectiveness of responsible gambling approaches, and increase customer utilisation of available harm-mitigation features

    Parameter Degeneracies in Neutrino Oscillation Measurement of Leptonic CP and T Violation

    The measurement of the mixing angle \theta_{13}, sign of \Delta m^2_{13} and the CP or T violating phase \delta is fraught with ambiguities in neutrino oscillation. In this paper we give an analytic treatment of the paramater degeneracies associated with measuring the \nu_\mu -> \nu_e probability and its CP and/or T conjugates. For CP violation, we give explicit solutions to allow us to obtain the regions where there exist two-fold and four-fold degeneracies. We calculate the fractional differences, \Delta \theta / \bar{\theta}, between the allowed solutions which may be used to compare with the expected sensitivities of the experiments. For T violation we show that there is always a complete degeneracy between solutions with positive and negative \Delta m^2_{13} which arises due to a symmetry and cannot be removed by observing one neutrino oscillation probability and its T conjugate. Thus, there is always a four fold parameter degeneracy apart from exceptional points. Explicit solutions are also given and the fractional differences are computed. The bi-probability CP/T trajectory diagrams are extensively used to illuminate the nature of the degeneracies.Comment: 35 pages, Latex, 11 postscript figures, minor correction

    Discovery of a New Transient Magnetar Candidate: XTE J1810-197

    We report the discovery of a new X-ray pulsar, XTE J1810-197. The source was serendipitously discovered on 2003 July 15 by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) while observing the soft gamma repeater SGR 1806-20. The pulsar has a 5.54 s spin-period and a soft spectrum (photon index ~ 4). We detect the source in earlier RXTE observations back to 2003 January. These show that a transient outburst began between 2002 November 17 and 2003 January 23 and that the pulsar has been spinning down since then, with a high rate Pdot ~ 10^-11 s/s showing significant timing noise, but no evidence for Doppler shifts due to a binary companion. The rapid spin-down rate and slow spin-period imply a super-critical magnetic field B=3x10^14 G and a young characteristic age < 7600 yr. These properties are strikingly similar to those of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma repeaters, making the source a likely new magnetar. A follow-up Chandra observation provided a 2".5 radius error circle within which the 1.5 m Russian-Turkish Optical Telescope RTT150 found a limiting magnitude of R_c=21.5, in accord with other recently reported limits. The source is present in archival ASCA and ROSAT data as well, at a level 100 times fainter than the \~ 3 mCrab seen in 2003. This suggests that other X-ray sources that are currently in a state similar to the inactive phase of XTE J1810-197 may also be unidentified magnetars awaiting detection via a similar activity.Comment: Submitted to ApJL; 4 pages; 4 figure

    A recent issue of Practice: Social Work in Action featured a paper by Rogers that examined whether the issue of problem gambling was a suitable case for social work. Rogers’ overview was (in various places) out of date, highly selective, contradictory, presented unsupported claims and somewhat misleading. Rogers’ paper is to be commended for putting the issue of problem gambling on the social work agenda. However, social workers need up-to-date information and contextually situated information if they are to make informed decisions in helping problem gamblers

    QCD Corrections to Spin Correlations in Top Quark Production at Lepton Colliders

    Spin correlations, using a generic spin basis, are investigated to leading order in QCD for top quark production at lepton colliders. Even though, these radiative corrections induce an anomalous gamma/Z magnetic moment for the top quarks and allow for single, real gluon emission, their effects on the top quark spin orientation are very small.
