Analysis of beach erosion by storm using artificial neural network

    Get PDF
Beach erosion by storm condition is so severe and it causes major unbalance on sand budget along the coastline. Beach erosion including overwash is complicated and difficult to analyze. The beach erosion of overwash using the artificial neural network is compared with the empirical equation developed by robust regression and experiment data in this study. Error-back propagation method is used for training artificial neural networks. The eroded volume of sand is well estimated by the artificial neural network without understanding mechanism of beach process. The study focused on onshore and offshore sediment transport by overwash on storm wave condition

Experiment 1 was a feeding trial in which 75 (Landrace ⅹ Yorkshire) ⅹ Duroc pigs with average initial bodyweight (BW) of 26 ± 1 kg were used. It was assigned to three pigs/pen and five pens/treatment. Experiment 2 was a metabolic trial in which 25 (LandraceⅹYorkshire)ⅹDuroc pigs with average initial bodyweight (BW) of 36 ± 1 kg were used. The basal diet consisted of maize (57.71 %), soybean meal (32.45 %), and wheat bran (5 %). Treatments consisted of i) CON (control diet); ii) OE (organic acid + essential oils) (Aviplus-S®), that is, CON + 0.05 % OE; iii) OC (organic charcoal) (Olga Black®), that is, CON + 0.1 % OC; iv) AE (anise extracts) (RESQ®), that is, CON + 0.015 % AE; and v) PB (probiotics) (Bonvital®), that is, CON + 0.1 % PB. Average daily gain (ADG) and gain/feed ratio (G : F) were significantly higher in the OE and AE groups than in the others. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) for OE, OC, and AE treatments was significantly higher than that for CON and PB treatments. Dry matter (DM) digestibility was significantly higher in AE than CON. Crude protein (CP) was significantly higher in OE, AE, and PB than CON. CON and other treatments did not cause significant differences in blood l-density lipoprotein (LDL), and glucose. NH3 emissions were significantly lower in all treated groups than in CON. Among the treatments, NH3 emissions were lowest in OE and AE. H2S emissions were significantly lower in OE, AE, and PB than in CON. Among the treatments, OE and AE were most effective at reducing H2S emissions. The emissions of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) showed no significant difference between treatments and CON. In conclusion, this experiment was shown to be more effective on growth performance, malodour emission, blood profiles, and nutrient digestibility in OE and AE than other additives. Keywords: Digestibility, feed, influence, odour, supplementation, swin

Observation of the Smectic C -- Smectic I Critical Point

We report the first observation of the smectic C--smectic I (C--I) critical point by Xray diffraction studies on a binary system. This is in confirmity with the theoretical idea of Nelson and Halperin that coupling to the molecular tilt should induce hexatic order even in the C phase and as such both C and I (a tilted hexatic phase) should have the same symmetry. The results provide evidence in support of the recent theory of Defontaines and Prost proposing a new universality class for critical points in layered systems.Comment: 9 pages Latex and 5 postscript figures available from [email protected] on request, Phys.Rev.Lett. The project of a high-power FEL at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and its recent status are described. The FEL is driven by a superconducting energy recovery linac. The first-stage machine will operate in the far IR region and its CW power is expected to be a few kW. Possible upgrade of the machine is also considered. The upgraded machine will operate in the near IR region and its expected power is a few tens kW. Magnetic ordering and charge transport in electron-doped La₁-yCeyMnO₃ (0.1 ≤ y ≤ 0.3) films

Microstructure, magnetic and transport properties of the as-deposited La₁−yCeyMnO₃(0.1 ≤ y ≤ 0.3) films, prepared by a pulse laser deposition, have been investigated in wide region of temperature and magnetic field. The microstructure analysis reveals that all films have a high c-oriented texture, the orthorhombic crystal lattice and the negligible quantity of CeO₂ inclusions. The observed strip-domain phase with a periodic spacing of about 3c, the crystal lattice of which is the same to the basic film phase, reveals the magnetic behavior typical for the Griffiths phase. The regions of the double-period modulated phase was found at room temperature in the y = 0.1 film, which are treated as the Mn³⁺/Mn²⁺ ordering with the partial ferromagnetic → antiferromagnetic transition at TN ≤ 80 K. At the same time, the carried out investigation manifests that the magnetic and transport properties of the electron-doped La₁-yCeyMnO₃ films, driven by a cation doping, are similar to that for the hole-doped La/Ca manganites. Therefore, one can conclude, that does not exist of a principle difference between the mechanisms of spin-ordering and charge-transport in the hole- and the electron-doped manganites

Ultrafast photoinduced reflectivity transients in (Nd0.5Sr0.5)MnO3(Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5})MnO_3

The temperature dependence of ultrafast photoinduced reflectivity transients is reported in Nd0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} thin film. The photoinduced reflectivity shows a complex response with very different temperature dependences on different timescales. The response on the sub-ps timescale appears to be only weakly sensitive to the 270K-metal-insulator phase transition. Below 160\sim 160 K the sub-ps response displays a two component behavior indicating inhomogeneity of the film resulting from the substrate induced strain. On the other hand, the slower response on the 10-100 ps timescale is sensitive only to the metal-insulator phase transition and is in agreement with some previously published results. The difference in the temperature dependences of the responses on nanosecond and μ\mu s timescales indicates that thermal equilibrium between the different degrees of fredom is established relatively slowly - on a nanosecond timescale

Plasma Components Affect Accuracy of Circulating Cancer-Related MicroRNA Quantitation

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as candidate biomarkers of various diseases and conditions including malignancy and pregnancy. This approach requires sensitive and accurate quantitation of miRNA concentrations in body fluids. Herein we report that enzyme-based miRNA quantitation, which is currently the mainstream approach for identifying differences in miRNA abundance among samples, is skewed by endogenous serum factors that co-purify with miRNAs and anticoagulant agents used during collection. Of importance, different miRNAs were affected to varying extent among patient samples. By developing measures to overcome these interfering activities, we increased the accuracy, and improved the sensitivity of miRNA detection up to 30-fold. Overall, the present study outlines key factors that prevent accurate miRNA quantitation in body fluids and provides approaches that enable faithful quantitation of miRNA abundance in body fluids
