The COVID-19 Pandemic and Japanâs Anxiety-Suppression Society: Anxiety, Self-Restraint, and Solidarity in a Disaster Community
In this article, I analyze the Japanese governmentâs response and public discourse during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period covering the onset of the pandemic, the declaration of a state of emergency, and the decline in the second wave of infections by mid-October 2020. Assessing that the virus was highly contagious but not particularly fatal, the Japanese government adopted a policy focusing on the prevention of large-scale clusters of infections and treatment of severe cases, calling for the public to practice of âself-restraintâ in avoiding the âthree Câsâ of closed spaces, concentrations of people, and close contact. The goal of this measure was to minimize the pandemicâs socioeconomic impact and sustain the health care system. It was successful in terms of infection and fatality rates. Particularly after the state of emergency was lifted on April 7, Japan began to garner global attention as a model for containing the pandemic without coercion. Behind Prime Minister Abeâs resignation, however, lay the âfailureâ of Japanâs COVID-19 response. The Japanese people lost faith in the governmentâs response owing to its perceived harm to publicness, as symbolized in the âAbe-no-maskâ incident. Japanese society is a âdisaster community,â sharing in the anxiety over the experiences and memories of disasters occurring over the past twenty-five years, including the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 and Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Japan has thus experienced COVID-19 as a part of a greater, more complex chain of disasters. The response to COVID-19 in the form of the request for self-restraint was also rooted in such communal solidarity. Controversy over PCR testing policies or âoptimisticâ government perceptions pertaining to COVID-19 evince the present state of the disaster-nation that is Japan as it endeavors to suppress anxiety and maintain daily life as usual. I conceptualize Japanese society in this situation as an âanxiety-suppression society.
Landscape Urban Structure Design - S. RomĂŁo Sportive Park, Leiria Polis, Portugal
It is due to the modern movement the loss of both
landscape and open spaces multifunctionality. Consequently, it
merges the term of âgreen spacesâ amorphous and residual, often
void and without any appropriation, so characteristic of the
contemporary city. This study is a reflexion about and a practice
result of the return to these spaces multifunctionality through a
landscape structure on the urban space. We want this structure
to be continuous, structuring and assuring biologic processes and
fluxes that occur in the landscape systems. We present the casestudy
of S. RomĂŁo Sportive Park included in Polis Program of
Leiria City, in Portugal. It is a system of open spaces that
constitutes itself as a landscape structure, continuous and
multifunctional
Valuing Environmental Services Using Contingent Valuation Method
This paper presents the results of two studies in Lao PDR that assessed people's willingness to pay (WTP) using the Contingent Valuation Methodology (CVM). The first study investigated the WTP of residents for the sustainable development and maintenance of urban parks in the city using Saysetha Park as the case study. In this study residents expressed that urban parks are very important to them as they are areas for relaxation and areas to conserve urban biodiversity. The WTP survey revealed that the residents' mean WTP is 10,741kip/month/household. With this amount, it was estimated that a monthly water bill surcharge of 3,000/kip/month/household may be recommended to maintain urban parks. The second study assessed the WTP for biodiversity conservation and sustainability in the Houay Nhang Protected Area. Using CVM, the WTP responses showed that the monthly contribution that would be acceptable to the people is 5,000 kip. The logit regression shows that this WTP value is influenced by bid prices, gender, and educational levels. The respondents recognized the importance of the protected area for environmental and biodiversity protection.contingent valuation, Lao PDR

Relevance, Resonance, and Historiography: Interpreting the Lives and Experiences of Civil War Soldiers
Carmichael shares his experiences of portraying Corporal Bobby Fields at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in the summer of 1985. He uses Fields as a conduit to explore the scholarship pertaining to the common soldier of the Civil War and how material culture can provide a new window into understanding of making the battlefield come alive for visitors
Una nueva especie del género Stilobezzia del Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, Argentina (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)
A new species of Stilobezzia (Acanthohelea), collected in the Nothofagus forests of the Nahuel Huapi National Park (Argentina), is described, phopographed and illustrated based on the examination of  male and female adults. The new species can be easily recognized by the elongate and narrow posteromedian projection of the male sternite 9; it is compared with S. (A.) hirsuta Ingram & Macfie. A new species, Stilobezzia (Acanthohelea) longisternalis, collected in the Nothofagus forest of the Nahuel Huapi National Park (Argentina) is described, photographed and illustrated based on the examination of male and female adults.
