    Do Buyer's Supporting Efforts For Sub-Supplier Make Prime Supplier's Performance Better?

    It is widely accepted that capable suppliers do important role for buyer's competitiveness in today's business environment. Moreover, not only the importance of supplier development but also the importance of sub-supplier development has been emphasized. This study examines how buyer's efforts of supporting sub-supplier development impacts on performance of prime supplier. The study results show that while buyer's effort of monitoring and information sharing to sub-suppliers improve the performance of prime supplier, buyer's effort of knowledge sharing do not improve prime supplier's performance.

    Relationship between Work Hours and Smoking Behaviors in Korean Male Wage Workers

    OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study are 1) to measure the prevalence of smoking according to weekly work hours by using data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), and 2) to explain the cause of high smoking prevalence among those with short or long work hours by relative explanatory fraction. METHODS: Data from a total of 2,044 male subjects who responded to the questionnaire in the 10th year (2007) and 11th year (2008) of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study were used for analysis. Current smoking, smoking cessation, continuous smoking, start of smoking, weekly work hours, occupational characteristics, sociodemographic and work-related factors, and health behavior-related variables were analyzed. Log-binomial regression analysis was used to study the relationship between weekly work hours and smoking behaviors in terms of the prevalence ratio. RESULTS: The 2008 age-adjusted smoking prevalence was 64.9% in the short work hours group, 54.7% in the reference work hours group, and 60.6% in the long work hours group. The smoking prevalence of the short work hours group was 1.39 times higher than that of the reference work hours group (95% confidence interval of 1.17-1.65), and this was explained by demographic variables and occupational characteristics. The smoking prevalence of the long work hours group was 1.11 times higher than that of the reference work hours group when the age was standardized (95% confidence interval of 1.03-1.19). This was explained by demographic variables. No independent effects of short or long work hours were found when the variables were adjusted. CONCLUSION: Any intervention program to decrease the smoking prevalence in the short work hours group must take into account employment type, job satisfaction, and work-related factors

    Making Our Schools More Creative: Korea’s Efforts and Challenges

    The Korean government has been interested in developing creativity in education and has attempted to increase the creativity of schools since the mid-1990s. This study aims to critically review the policy efforts of the Korean government for the last twenty years. To achieve this aim, the study analyzes government documents and related department website materials since mid-1990s when creativity emerged as a key agenda in Korean education policy. The results reveal that the government’s endeavors for achieving creativity include increasing flexibility in the national curriculum, developing teachers’ creativity by improving teacher education, and establishing supporting systems such as online information websites and teaching and learning materials. However, these efforts have been inadequate for an authentic transformation of schools. This study recommends that the government should emphasize creativity education through subject matter, support teacher-driven development of teaching materials, define student creativity as an ultimate goal of teacher creativity, and cultivate a co-operative and communicative school culture

    Highly restricted localization of RNA polymerase II within a locus control region of a tissue-specific chromatin domain

    RNA polymerase II (Pol II) can associate with regulatory elements far from promoters. For the murine β-globin locus, Pol II binds the β-globin locus control region (LCR) far upstream of the β-globin promoters, independent of recruitment to and activation of the βmajor promoter. We describe here an analysis of where Pol II resides within the LCR, how it is recruited to the LCR, and the functional consequences of recruitment. High-resolution analysis of the distribution of Pol II revealed that Pol II binding within the LCR is restricted to the hypersensitive sites. Blocking elongation eliminated the synthesis of genic and extragenic transcripts and eliminated Pol II from the βmajor open reading frame. However, the elongation blockade did not redistribute Pol II at the hypersensitive sites, suggesting that Pol II is recruited to these sites. The distribution of Pol II did not strictly correlate with the distributions of histone acetylation and methylation. As Pol II associates with histone-modifying enzymes, Pol II tracking might be critical for establishing and maintaining broad histone modification patterns. However, blocking elongation did not disrupt the histone modification pattern of the β-globin locus, indicating that Pol II tracking is not required to maintain the pattern

    Fluctuation Study of the Specific Heat of MgB2

    The specific heat of polycrystalline Mg11^{11}B2_{2} has been measured with high resolution ac calorimetry from 5 to 45 K at constant magnetic fields. The excess specific heat above Tc_{c} is discussed in terms of Gaussian fluctuations and suggests that Mg11^{11}B2_{2} is a bulk superconductor with Ginzburg-Landau coherence length ξ0=26\xi_{0}=26 \AA . The transition-width broadening in field is treated in terms of lowest-Landau-level (LLL) fluctuations. That analysis requires that ξ0=20\xi_{0}=20 \AA . The underestimate of the coherence length in field, along with deviations from 3D LLL predictions, suggest that there is an influence from the anisotropy of Bc2_{c2} between the c-axis and the a-b plane.Comment: Phys.     Dynamic Regulation of Histone H3 Methylated at Lysine 79 within a Tissue-specific Chromatin Domain

    Post-translational modifications of individual lysine residues of core histones can exert unique functional consequences. For example, methylation of histone H3 at lysine 79 (H3-meK79) has been implicated recently in gene silencing in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, the distribution and function of H3-meK79 in mammalian chromatin are not known. We found that H3-meK79 has a variable distribution within the murine beta-globin locus in adult erythroid cells, being preferentially enriched at the active betamajor gene. By contrast, acetylated H3 and H4 and H3 methylated at lysine 4 were enriched both at betamajor and at the upstream locus control region. H3-meK79 was also enriched at the active cad gene, whereas the transcriptionally inactive loci necdin and MyoD1 contained very little H3-meK79. As the pattern of H3-meK79 at the beta-globin locus differed between adult and embryonic erythroid cells, establishment and/or maintenance of H3-meK79 was developmentally dynamic. Genetic complementation analysis in null cells lacking the erythroid and megakaryocyte-specific transcription factor p45/NF-E2 showed that p45/NF-E2 preferentially establishes H3-meK79 at the betamajor promoter. These results support a model in which H3-meK79 is strongly enriched in mammalian chromatin at active genes but not uniformly throughout active chromatin domains. As H3-meK79 is highly regulated at the beta-globin locus, we propose that the murine ortholog of Disruptor of Telomeric Silencing-1-like (mDOT1L) methyltransferase, which synthesizes H3-meK79, regulates beta-globin transcription

    Desmoplakin assembly dynamics in four dimensions: multiple phases differentially regulated by intermediate filaments and actin

    The intermediate filament (IF)–binding protein desmoplakin (DP) is essential for desmosome function and tissue integrity, but its role in junction assembly is poorly understood. Using time-lapse imaging, we show that cell–cell contact triggers three temporally overlapping phases of DP-GFP dynamics: (1) the de novo appearance of punctate fluorescence at new contact zones after as little as 3 min; (2) the coalescence of DP and the armadillo protein plakophilin 2 into discrete cytoplasmic particles after as little as 15 min; and (3) the cytochalasin-sensitive translocation of cytoplasmic particles to maturing borders, with kinetics ranging from 0.002 to 0.04 μm/s. DP mutants that abrogate or enhance association with IFs exhibit delayed incorporation into junctions, altering particle trajectory or increasing particle pause times, respectively. Our data are consistent with the idea that DP assembles into nascent junctions from both diffusible and particulate pools in a temporally overlapping series of events triggered by cell–cell contact and regulated by actin and DP–IF interactions
