Windsor Village revitalization : urban agriculture takes root

The current American food system is defined by rising food prices, industrial production practices, immense transportation and energy costs, and lack of education about food choices. Many communities directly impacted are found in urban environments, where lack of access to healthy food choices is compounded by environmental factors that limit safe opportunities to exercise. There have been attempts to solve these problems including educational programs, and the construction of urban agricultural farms, greenways, and trail systems. However, a comprehensive review of how these projects can be integrated within a neighborhood and park context has not been completed. This creative project centered on this topic, and includes study of emerging ideas around urban park design and the role of community design, urban agriculture, and community building in addressing health concerns. Methods for this project included interviews of administrative personnel from health and parks organizations, content analysis of food related videos, literature on hunger, food, and park design, and outdoor educational settings was reviewed, and an assessment of park use patterns was undertaken. Traditional site design methods were also employed. Findings from the research phase were used to develop design concepts for a community park and surrounding area for the Windsor Village neighborhood at the junction of I-465 and I-70 East in Indianapolis. Outcomes include an analysis of connections between food sources, consumers, health care facilities, schools and community centers in this area of Indianapolis, and conceptual designs for a community park and the surrounding neighborhood.Department of Landscape ArchitectureThesis (M.L.A.

Jane Austen and Genre: Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and the Triumph of the Realistic Novel

This paper analyzes Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey in terms of genre. In particular, it examines the theatrical in Mansfield Park and the Gothic in Northanger Abbey. The production of Elizabeth Inchbald’s Lovers’ Vows and Catherine’s Gothic novel reading are key to the analysis of these genres. However, the use of subgenres goes far beyond the Bertrams’ production and Catherine’s books. Rather, the characters themselves adopt theatrical and Gothic characteristics throughout the novel. Furthermore, when these subgenres appear, they are presented in a manner that is harmful to the main characters. In this sense, Austen invokes the theatrical and the Gothic in order to underplay them, and in doing so, she validates the emerging realistic novel

Survivorship and Growth of Seedlings and Saplings in Urban Forests

Research in 1993, 2003, and 2013 showed high rates of tree mortality and low rates of recruitment (new trees) in Portland, Oregon’s Forest Park. To determine if the lack of young trees was an urban phenomenon, we added three control sites in the Mount Hood National Forest in 2013. Last summer, seedlings and saplings were measured at all sites in Forest Park, the Ancient Forest Preserve, and at the control sites. Seedlings are trees less than 2 meters tall, and saplings are trees greater than 2 meters tall but having a dbh of less than 10cm. The 2018 data was compared to that collected in 2013. We measured dbh (diameter at breast height) of saplings and the basal area for seedlings, as well as the tree height and the height of the lowest living branch. In 2018, the control sites had significantly more live trees, more coniferous trees, more shade tolerant trees, and more seedlings and saplings. We also found that the seedlings and saplings in 2018 had a greater diameter at the control sites than the urban sites. We found significantly more dead trees in 2018 than 2013 in Forest Park

Walkability Design for Urban Public Housing Park

    Get PDF
The walkability approach is essential to ensure the connectivity among space in the urban area. The design should be appropriate, safety, maximize and capable of reaching every inch of the spaces, just by walking. Good connectivity must allow people to walk freely and accessible in many ways. People have great chances to meet each other or having potential outdoor activities without any challenges. This study aims to measure the user perception of the existing spaces in the urban public housing environment that been covered and uncovered with the walkability linkages. The objectives of this study are to identify the existing pedestrian linkages in the study area; to investigate the user perception of the existing walkability system in the study area, and finally to conclude and provide a better solution for better walkability opportunity among residents to access the public park.© 2016.
