    Locating Family of Origin Following Family Tracing: The Experiences of Unaccompanied and Separated Young People Seeking Asylum

    Unaccompanied young people comprise a significant proportion of forcibly displaced persons in the UK, facing further complications due to their ages and subsequent support needs. The importance of family networks for developing young people, including the negative sequelae of family separation, has been well documented. However, limited research exists with respect to unaccompanied young people’s efforts to locate missing family members. The present study aims to contribute to the narrow research base through illuminating how unaccompanied young people experience family tracing procedures by asking them about this directly. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight young people to ask them about their experiences of family tracing with the British Red Cross, the singular provider of international family tracing efforts in the UK. Their resulting accounts were analysed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and three main themes were identified: ‘Adjustment’, ‘Uncertainty’ and ‘Ability’. Participants experienced distress as a result of family separation and had ongoing concerns about the welfare of missing family members. Nonetheless, they maintained hope and a strong desire to find sought family. Participants resourcefully employed their own search strategies and enlisted the help of the British Red Cross. Adjusting to successfully tracing family members echoed other transitions participants had made to social and legal systems in the UK. Maintaining a sense of purpose in planning for their futures was a common factor for many participants. These findings have significant implications for unaccompanied young people seeking asylum, emphasising the importance of family tracing and reunion rights for the psychosocial wellbeing of this cohort. Adequate awareness of the implications of family separation and tracing procedures is vital for professionals working with this group to provide appropriate support. Policy revisions are required to broaden conceptualisations of family membership and prioritise the rights of unaccompanied young people as children first and equal citizens

    Investigation of bone resorption within a cortical basic multicellular unit using a lattice-based computational model

    In this paper we develop a lattice-based computational model focused on bone resorption by osteoclasts in a single cortical basic multicellular unit (BMU). Our model takes into account the interaction of osteoclasts with the bone matrix, the interaction of osteoclasts with each other, the generation of osteoclasts from a growing blood vessel, and the renewal of osteoclast nuclei by cell fusion. All these features are shown to strongly influence the geometrical properties of the developing resorption cavity including its size, shape and progression rate, and are also shown to influence the distribution, resorption pattern and trajectories of individual osteoclasts within the BMU. We demonstrate that for certain parameter combinations, resorption cavity shapes can be recovered from the computational model that closely resemble resorption cavity shapes observed from microCT imaging of human cortical bone.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 1 table.     The objectives of this study were to prepare microcapsules containing verapamil and propranolol and to evaluate the kinetics and mechanism of drug release from the microcapsules using USP Apparatus 1. The effects of polymer concentration and polymer type on the cumulative amount of drug released were evaluated. The microcapsules were manufactured using Eudragit RS and RL polymers by solvent evaporation with the ultimate aim of prolonging drug release. Twenty-four formulations were prepared using different drug/polymer ratios. The effects of polymer type and polymer/drug ratios on the size, flow properties, surface morphology, and the release characteristics of the microcapsules were examined. The effects of drug inclusion methods on drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, and release properties of the complex microcapsules were also investigated. The formulations containing drug/polymer ratio 1:4 (w/w) were the most appropriate with respect to encapsulation efficiency (70%), flow properties (HR = 1.2), drug loading (15–20%), and drug release characteristics, in all cases.     The palaeontology and dating of the ‘Weybourne Crag’, an important marker horizon in the Early Pleistocene of the southern North Sea basin

    In the North Sea basin the marine bivalve Macoma balthica first appears within the Early Pleistocene ‘Weybourne Crag’, which forms an important biostratigraphical datum. Here we review the fossil assemblages from sites of this age, prompted by new discoveries from Sidestrand, Norfolk, UK. The molluscan assemblages from this horizon are dominated by intertidal species with some colder/deeper water taxa and a few temperate non-marine species. A high boreal/low arctic marine environment with reduced salinities is indicated. An extensive assemblage of small mammals dominated by voles includes two species (Mimomys hordijki and Ungaromys dehmi) previously unknown from the British Pleistocene. The assemblage can be assigned to Tesakov's Mammal Biozone MNR1 (=MN17, Middle Villafranchian), which according to current estimates corresponds to a date of ∼2.2-2.1 Ma (MIS 84-79). It matches another assemblage from -61 m to -65 m in the Zuurland-2 borehole in The Netherlands, and is similar to that from the Dutch Tiglian type site at Tegelen, although this has more temperate elements. A late Tiglian age is consistent with the co-occurrence of the marine bivalves Macoma balthica, Mya arenaria and the freshwater gastropod Viviparus glacialis in the Zuurland-2 borehole and in a North Sea borehole (BGS 52-02-472). A Macoma balthica – Mya arenaria Concurrent Range Zone is defined for this assemblage, which can be traced across the North Sea basin. Amino acid dating provides strong independent support for these correlations and indicates that the Baventian cold stage post-dates the Bramertonian (Norwich Crag). It also confirms that Early Pleistocene molluscan assemblages with M. balthica are younger than those without it. The correlation of this marine marker horizon with Mammal Biozone MNR1 provides a secure link between continental and marine sequences during the Early Pleistocene. It also provides a basis for dating events in the pre-glacial fluvial drainage history and linking it to the East European mammal zonation

    Carbon storage and DNA absorption in allophanic soils and paleosols

    Andisols and andic paleosols dominated by the nanocrystalline mineral allophane sequester large amounts of carbon (C), attributable mainly to its chemical bonding with charged hydroxyl groups on the surface of allophane together with its physical protection in nanopores within and between allophane nanoaggregates. C near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra for a New Zealand Andisol (Tirau series) showed that the organic matter (OM) mainly comprises quinonic, aromatic, aliphatic, and carboxylic C. In different buried horizons from several other Andisols, C contents varied but the C species were similar, attributable to pedogenic processes operating during developmental upbuilding, downward leaching, or both. The presence of OM in natural allophanic soils weakened the adsorption of DNA on clay; an adsorption isotherm experiment involving humic acid (HA) showed that HA-free synthetic allophane adsorbed seven times more DNA than HA-rich synthetic allophane. Phosphorus X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for salmonsperm DNA and DNA-clay complexes indicated that DNA was bound to the allophane clay through the phosphate group, but it is not clear if DNA was chemically bound to the surface of the allophane or to OM, or both. We plan more experiments to investigate interactions among DNA, allophane (natural and synthetic), and OM. Because DNA shows a high affinity to allophane, we are studying the potential to reconstruct late Quaternary palaeoenvironments by attempting to extract and characterise ancient DNA from allophanic paleosol

    Effects of dental probing on occlusal surfaces - A scanning electron microscopy evaluation

    The aim of this clinical-morphological study was to investigate the effects of dental probing on occlusal surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Twenty sound occlusal surfaces of third molars and 20 teeth with initial carious lesions of 17- to 26-year-old patients (n = 18) were involved. Ten molars of each group were probed with a sharp dental probe (No. 23) before extraction; the other molars served as negative controls. After extraction of the teeth, the crowns were separated and prepared for the SEM study. Probing-related surface defects, enlargements and break-offs of occlusal pits and fissures were observed on all occlusal surfaces with initial carious lesions and on 2 sound surfaces, respectively. No traumatic defects whatsoever were visible on unprobed occlusal surfaces. This investigation confirms findings of light-microscopic studies that using a sharp dental probe for occlusal caries detection causes enamel defects. Therefore, dental probing should be considered as an inappropriate procedure and should be replaced by a meticulous visual inspection. Critical views of tactile caries detection methods with a sharp dental probe as a diagnostic tool seem to be inevitable in undergraduate and postgraduate dental education programmes.     Effects of precompetition state anxiety interventions on performance time and accuracy among amateur soccer players: Revisiting the matching hypothesis

    In this study, we tested the matching ypothesis, which contends that administration of a cognitive or somatic anxiety intervention should be matched to a participant's dominant anxiety response. Sixty-one male soccer players (mean age 31.6 years, s=6.3) were assigned to one of four groups based on their responses to the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, which was modified to include a directional scale. Interventions were randomly administered in a counterbalanced order 10 min before each performance trial on a soccer skill test. The dominantly cognitive anxious group (n=17), the dominantly somatic anxious group (n=17), and the non-anxious control intervention group (n=14) completed a baseline performance trial. The second and third trials were completed with random administration of brief cognitive and somatic interventions. The non-anxious control group (n=13) completed three trials with no intervention. A mixed-model, GroupTreatment multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant (P0.05), or performance time or accuracy (P>0.05).
