Mechanisms of nonstoichiometry in HfN1-<i>x</i>
Density functional theory is used to calculate defect structures that can accommodate nonstoichiometry in hafnium nitride: HfN1-x, 0 ≤ X ≤ 0.25. It is predicted that a mechanism assuming simple distributions of nitrogen vacancies can accurately describe the variation in the experimentally observed lattice parameter with respect to the nitrogen nonstoichiometry. Although the lattice parameter changes are remarkably small across the whole nonstoichiometry range, the variations in the bulk modulus are much greater

Oxygen diffusion in Sr0.75Y0.25CoO2.625: a molecular dynamics study
Oxygen diffusion in Sr0.75Y0.25CoO2.625 is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with an established set of Born model potentials. We predict an activation energy of diffusion for 1.56 eV in the temperature range of 1000-1400 K. We observe extensive disordering of the oxygen ions over a subset of lattice sites. Furthermore, oxygen ion diffusion both in the a-b plane and along the c axis requires the same set of rate-limiting ion hops. It is predicted that oxygen transport in Sr0.75Y0.25CoO2.625 is therefore isotropic
Superlattice properties of carbon nanotubes in a transverse electric field
Electron motion in a (n,1) carbon nanotube is shown to correspond to a de
Broglie wave propagating along a helical line on the nanotube wall. This
helical motion leads to periodicity of the electron potential energy in the
presence of an electric field normal to the nanotube axis. The period of this
potential is proportional to the nanotube radius and is greater than the
interatomic distance in the nanotube. As a result, the behavior of an electron
in a (n,1) nanotube subject to a transverse electric field is similar to that
in a semiconductor superlattice. In particular, Bragg scattering of electrons
from the long-range periodic potential results in the opening of gaps in the
energy spectrum of the nanotube. Modification of the bandstructure is shown to
be significant for experimentally attainable electric fields, which raises the
possibility of applying this effect to novel nanoelectronic devices.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

OATP1B1 and tumour OATP1B3 modulate exposure, toxicity, and survival after irinotecan-based chemotherapy
Background: Treatment of advanced and metastatic colorectal cancer with irinotecan is hampered by severe toxicities. The active metabolite of irinotecan, SN-38, is a known substrate of drug-metabolising enzymes, including UGT1A1, as well as OATP and ABC drug transporters. Methods:Blood samples (n=127) and tumour tissue (n=30) were obtained from advanced cancer patients treated with irinotecan-based regimens for pharmacogenetic and drug level analysis and transporter expression. Clinical variables, toxicity, and outcomes data were collected.Results:SLCO1B1 521C was significantly associated with increased SN-38 exposure (P\u3c0.001), which was additive with UGT1A1∗28. ABCC5 (rs562) carriers had significantly reduced SN-38 glucuronide and APC metabolite levels. Reduced risk of neutropenia and diarrhoea was associated with ABCC2-24C/T (odds ratio (OR)=0.22, 0.06-0.85) and CES1 (rs2244613; OR=0.29, 0.09-0.89), respectively. Progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer in SLCO1B1 388G/G patients and reduced in ABCC2-24T/T and UGT1A1∗28 carriers. Notably, higher OATP1B3 tumour expression was associated with reduced PFS.Conclusions:Clarifying the association of host genetic variation in OATP and ABC transporters to SN-38 exposure, toxicity and PFS provides rationale for personalising irinotecan-based chemotherapy. Our findings suggest that OATP polymorphisms and expression in tumour tissue may serve as important new biomarkers
Effects of dental probing on occlusal surfaces - A scanning electron microscopy evaluation
The aim of this clinical-morphological study was to investigate the effects of dental probing on occlusal surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Twenty sound occlusal surfaces of third molars and 20 teeth with initial carious lesions of 17- to 26-year-old patients (n = 18) were involved. Ten molars of each group were probed with a sharp dental probe (No. 23) before extraction; the other molars served as negative controls. After extraction of the teeth, the crowns were separated and prepared for the SEM study. Probing-related surface defects, enlargements and break-offs of occlusal pits and fissures were observed on all occlusal surfaces with initial carious lesions and on 2 sound surfaces, respectively. No traumatic defects whatsoever were visible on unprobed occlusal surfaces. This investigation confirms findings of light-microscopic studies that using a sharp dental probe for occlusal caries detection causes enamel defects. Therefore, dental probing should be considered as an inappropriate procedure and should be replaced by a meticulous visual inspection. Critical views of tactile caries detection methods with a sharp dental probe as a diagnostic tool seem to be inevitable in undergraduate and postgraduate dental education programmes.
