The use of advanced imaging techniques for studying neuromuscular disorders

The collagen VI-related disorders (COL6-RDs) are a group of severe congenital neuromuscular disorders with no available treatment. New insight into its molecular characterisation together with the advance in the microscopy field offers the opportunity of making early diagnosis a quotidian process. In this study, three state-of-the-art microscopy techniques such as light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM), second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) are used to study a mouse model of the disorder. With these techniques parameters that define the pathological phenotype such as the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the muscle fibres, the distance between the myosin bands within the sarcomeres, and the differential lifetimes of the muscles autofluorescence can be compared to the wild type

Hitting Them Where It Hurts: Financial Integration and Borrowing Costs as Determinants of Economic Sanctions Success

This paper builds off of recent work on the interaction between political economy and economic sanctions and argues that a target government's degree of financial integration and dependence on short-term borrowing directly affects the target's ability to withstand the coercive pressure of sender states. A government's relative level of exposure to and integration with the international financial system increases the impact of economic sanctions by increasing the costs associated with policies that are not in line with those of the system's dominant powers. States with higher levels of financial integration and short-term debt are more likely to require access to international financial markets in order to continue to service their international payments as well as finance the principal and interest on outstanding debt contracts. Increases in potential or realized financial costs will increase the pressure on target governments to acquiesce to sender demands. I use a logistic regression model to test the hypotheses that the target state's degree of financial integration and amount of short-term debt affect the probability of sanctions success with data on sanctions threats and impositions on high politics cases from 1971-2000. The results provide strong statistical support for the hypotheses and provide evidence to support the argument that international financial markets place a strong constraint on the behavior of target governments.Master of Art

Espais naturals al País Valencià: Una nova categoria de gestió. Breu exposició sobre el Decret 109/1998 de 29 de juliol, del Govern valencià

El medi natural del País Valencià es caracteritza per la seua antropització, per la tradicional convivència de l'acció humana amb unes condicions naturals típicament mediterrànies. Fins aquest moment, l'habitual política de protecció dels espais naturals venia exercint-se com una responsabilitat fonamentalment autonòmica en què els municipis sols tenien un paper marginal o, com a molt, subsidiari. El Decret del Govern valencià 109/1998 permet als ajuntaments d'aquesta Comunitat accedir als seients davanters en aquesta matèria, però allò que podria ser positiu en tant a la iniciativa de protecció no ha de significar una desordenada formulació de mesures de gestió, ús i regulació dels paratges. Així doncs, correspon a l'Administració ambiental valenciana un paper permanent de tutela i ordenació que no nega, gens ni mica, les essencials funcions locals conferides en aquest tema. Corresponde así a la Administración ambiental valenciana un permanente papel de tutela y ordenación que en nada ahoga las esenciales funciones locales conferidas en este asunto. Se analizan algunos defectos jurídico formales que pueden surgir ante la aplicación del mencionado Decreto y se propone que deje un menor margen discreccional a la Administración autonómica.The natural environment of the Valencia Land is characterized by its anthropization, i.e. the traditional cohabitation of activity human and the typically Mediterranean natural conditions. The Valencia environment administration therefore has a permanent role in supervising and maintaining order, without hindering at all the essential local functions granted in this matter. Some procedural flaws that could arise during the application of the aforementioned Decree are analysed, and a proposal is made that would give the regional government a smaller margin of discretion
