Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are useful statistical tools for medical diagnostic testing. It has been proved its capability to assess diagnostic marker’s ability to distinguish between healthy and diseased subjects and to compare different diagnostic markers. In this paper we introduce non parametric ROC summary statistics to assess a ROC curve across the entire range of F P F s ∈ (0, 1) as well as over a restricted range of F P F s and compare them with some existing ones through a simulation study and through some real data examples. We also show their capability to compare two diagnostic markers

Automated semantic annotation of rare disease cases: a case study

    Get PDF
MOTIVATION: As the number of clinical reports in the peer-reviewed medical literature keeps growing, there is an increasing need for online search tools to find and analyze publications on patients with similar clinical characteristics. This problem is especially critical and challenging for rare diseases, where publications of large series are scarce. Through an applied example, we illustrate how to automatically identify new relevant cases and semantically annotate the relevant literature about patient case reports to capture the phenotype of a rare disease named cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. RESULTS: Our results confirm that it is possible to automatically identify new relevant case reports with a high precision and to annotate them with a satisfactory quality (74% F-measure). Automated annotation with an emphasis to entirely describe all phenotypic abnormalities found in a disease may facilitate curation efforts by supplying phenotype retrieval and assessment of their frequency. Cannabidiol treatment might promote resilience to cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders: A review of possible mechanisms

Currently, there are no approved pharmacotherapies for addiction to cocaine and other psychostimulant drugs. Several studies have proposed that cannabidiol (CBD) could be a promising treatment for substance use disorders. In the present work, the authors describe the scarce preclinical and human research about the actions of CBD on the effects of stimulant drugs, mainly cocaine and methamphetamine (METH). Additionally, the possible mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential of CBD on stimulant use disorders are reviewed. CBD has reversed toxicity and seizures induced by cocaine, behavioural sensitization induced by amphetamines, motivation to self-administer cocaine and METH, context- and stress-induced reinstatement of cocaine and priming-induced reinstatement of METH seeking behaviours. CBD also potentiated the extinction of cocaine- and amphetamine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP), impaired the reconsolidation of cocaine CPP and prevented priming-induced reinstatement of METH CPP. Observational studies suggest that CBD may reduce problems related with crack-cocaine addiction, such as withdrawal symptoms, craving, impulsivity and paranoia (Fischer et al., 2015). The potential mechanisms involved in the protective effects of CBD on addiction to psychostimulant drugs include the prevention of drug-induced neuroadaptations (neurotransmitter and intracellular signalling pathways changes), the erasure of aberrant drug-memories, the reversion of cognitive deficits induced by psychostimulant drugs and the alleviation of mental disorders comorbid with psychostimulant abuse. Further, preclinical studies and future clinical trials are necessary to fully evaluate the potential of CBD as an intervention for cocaine and methamphetamine addictive disorders

Applying Recommendations to Align Competences, Methodology, and Assessment in Telematics, Computing, and Electronic Engineering Courses

The alignment between competences, teachinglearning methodologies, and assessment is a key element of European higher education. This paper presents the efforts carried out by six telematics, computer science and electronic engineering education teachers toward achieving this alignment in their subjects. In a joint work with pedagogues, a set of recommended actions are identified. A selection of these actions are applied and evaluated in the six subjects. The cross analysis of the results indicates that the actions allow students to better understand the methodologies and assessments planned for the subjects, facilitate (self-) regulation, and increase students’ involvement in the subjects

La conservación del patrimonio agroindustrial. Propuestas para la reutilización de los antiguos mataderos municipales y análisis de costes

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Methodology for decentralized analysis: detection, quantification and in situ monitoring of pharmaceutical formulations removal by electro-Fenton

Water quality is essential to both human and ecosystem health, and a fast detection of emerging pollutants is claimed, along with effective wastewater treatment plants to eliminate these types of substances. The goal of this study was the development of a sensitive and selective methodology to customize a handle device that meets this demand. Clozapine and its pharmacological formulation, Leponex®, were used as a model. The results obtained from the studies by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) demonstrated that this methodology allows a simpler and cheaper decentralized analysis without losing sensitivity, performing electrochemical measurements in situ, in real-time and directly without sample treatment, with a good precision (RSD 3.7 %) and excellent accuracy (recoveries between 97.6 and 99.9 %). Moreover, the methodology was successfully used for direct follow-up the medicine removal in real samples by electro-Fenton (EF) treatment. The results gathered showed a relative error of less than 2 % concerning the measurements made with the conventional potentiostat. Bearing this in mind, the effectiveness of these electrochemical techniques used in tandem with the comfort and high specificity offered by the portable device, a more exhaustive control of water quality can be achieved, thus improving the quality of life in the planet.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Acknowledgments. This work was supported by grants PID2019-104681RB-I00. Data courtesy of Dr Konstantina Kontopoulou. In the presence of a continuous response test/biomarker, it is often necessary to identify a cut-off point value to aid binary classification between diseased and non-diseased subjects. The symmetry-point approach which maximizes simultaneously both types of correct classification is one way to determine an optimal cut-off point. In this article, we study methods for constructing confidence intervals independently for the symmetry point and its corresponding sensitivity, as well as respective joint nonparametric confidence regions. We illustrate using data on the generation of antibodies elicited two weeks post-injection after the second dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in adult healthcare workers
