A Text Categorization Technique based on a Numerical Conversion of a Symbolic Expression and an Onion Layers Algorithm

    No full text
The dramatic increase in the amount of content available in digital forms gives rise to large-scale digital libraries, targeted at millions of users. As a result, it has become a necessary to categorize large texts (documents). The paper develops a novel method where text categorization is achieved via a reduction in the original data information using numerical conversion of a symbolic expression and an onion layers algorithm. Three different semantic categories were considered and five texts selected from each category for submission to a text categorization procedure using the proposed method. The results and the statistical evaluation of this procedure showed that the proposed method may be characterized as highly accurate for text categorization purposes

A semantic broadcasting method for the exchange of encoded texts between different XML schemas

    No full text
In this paper, we introduce a novel method, based on specific frequency segmentation, for the exchange of encoded texts between different XML schemas. In this process, we encode the text part of each element of the Dublin Core using a signal processing technique so that every text element broadcasts an audio signal in a unique frequency. In this way, every schema based on the XML language can exchange textual data. This method may be used in order to interchange different philosophies of the XML Schema and may also be used as a solution to the general problem of interoperability. More specifically, this method may be applied to TV metadata and the broadcasting services of automated libraries.Published versio

    A non-linear index to evaluate a journal's scientific impact

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to define a bibliometric indicator of the scientific impact of a journal, which combines objectivity with the ability to bridge many different bibliometric factors and in particular the side factors presented along with celebrated ISI impact factor. The particular goal is to determine a standard threshold value in which an independent self-organizing system will decide the correlation between this value and the impact factor of a journal. We name this factor "Cited Distance Factor (CDF)" and it is extracted via a well-fitted, recurrent Elman neural network. For a case study of this implementation we used a dataset of all journals of cell biology, ranking them according to the impact factor from the Web of Science Database and then comparing the rank according to the cited distance. For clarity reasons we also compare the cited distance factor with already known measures and especially with the recently introduced eigenfactor of the institute of scientific information (ISI)

Entropy as a Transitional In-Game Variable

    No full text
The aim of this research is to discover the bond of entropy and the experience of video game immersion, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to interpret the immersive experiences of players and how this bond of entropy and immersion could be transferred on other immersive technologies. The experiment was conducted on a selection of low-entropy scenes in three video games belonging to the genre of interactive drama. Six players were selected as the sample group for this research, based on their playthrough experiences of the games Heavy Rain (2010), Until Dawn (2015) and Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (2019) on the PlayStation platform. By monitoring the levels of entropy and immersion during their playthroughs, this research explores the potential of transferring immersion through the use of entropy from digital games to other immersive technologies. According to the research highlights and through data interpretation, entropy is found to be immensely influential upon achieving and maintaining narrative, physical and emotional immersion, and its effect could be further applied to other immersive technologies sharing a common ground with digital games, which features are further examined in finer detail in the current research
